John Piper: The New Pat Robertson

Piper is evidently striving to be the new Pat Robertson by making it plain for all to see that his theology is grossly deficient

In a tweet, Piper said:  God took out Osama bin Ladin. And he will take me out. And you. And everyone else. Only different ways.  Then, in his latest blog, he actually had the temerity to suggest that God was thrilled with the death of Osama, saying:  It is also true that God does delight in the death of the wicked.  It’s in this blog that Piper stretches this eisegesis beyond credulity by reading prophetic passages in Ezekiel and Revelation, along with a passage of warning to Israel in Deuteronomy as proof positive that God delights in the death of the wicked.

Thrilled with death huh?  Now there’s someone who doesn’t know how to read the Bible at all.  It’s a shame too.  I was hoping that there would be no new Robertson.  Alas…

I wonder if, by his own standards and miserable theological ineptitude, Piper believes God will rejoice at his death too.  Or is it only the death of people Piper doesn’t like that make God happy…

  1. As much as I have benefited from Piper’s teaching over the years, I still grapple with his perspective on things such as this. I understand that nothing happens, ultimately, outside the purview and sovereignty of God, but I just can’t accept that God delights in the death of his enemies any more than I can accept that God willed those jets into the World Trade Center towers. What’s your take, Jim?

    • piper’s wrong and he’s misrepresenting God. piper’s absurd hyper-calvinism has misled him yet again. God is sovereign, but no tyrant.

  2. I believe the Bible teaches that death is bad, that is is the last great enemy and that it will ultimately be destroyed. Doesn’t sound like God is a fan of death at all.

  4. Jim,

thanks for pointing out Piper’s post. I am not a Piper groupie, but he has clearly articulated his position on his blog. Please let the readers know where he is wrong in his reading of the Bible. Just to slap a label on him “he does not know how to read the Bible at all” seems like name calling. Maybe you should set aside time to write a post on your blog about it with a point by point response.
