Oh Hofstra, Oh Jocks…

Four Hofstra basketball players were arrested and charged with multiple counts of burglary of laptops, iPads and other items taken from campus dormitory rooms and perhaps the home of Coach Mo Cassara, the police said Friday.

As the kids say, isn’t that precious.

The police said the thefts in six unlocked dorm rooms occurred between Oct. 4 and Nov. 5. The sophomore Shaquille Stokes and the freshmen Jimmy Hall, Kentrell Washington and Dallas Anglin were arrested late Thursday.

The players pleaded not guilty at their arraignment Friday in the First District Court in Hempstead, N.Y., and were released on bail. None had any prior arrests on record.  Each player was suspended from the university and the team.

Among the items stolen were a Sony laptop, headphones, three MacBook computers, two iPads and an iPod Touch, the police said. Some of the items were sold on Craigslist and elsewhere, and the police suspect there may be more items missing. At a news conference Friday, the Nassau County Detective Lt. Raymond Cote said Cassara reported missing an iPad, iPhone, money and credit cards.

A sense of entitlement often follows kids lauded as athletes from middle school upwards and that sense of entitlement frequently results in behavior both immoral and illegal.  ‘We can do what we want and no one can do anything about it’ is the root belief.

So well done Hofstra for removing the hoodlums.  If jocks down here at UT had done the same thing the team, and the school, would have dragged its feet and done nothing for weeks.
