Today With Zwingli

On the 11th of March 1531 Zwingli published his commentary on Jeremiah and Lamentations.  It offered a fresh translation of the text in Latin and comments on the text (or better, annotations on the text).  Zwingli discusses significant Hebrew words and makes both historical and theological observations.  His aim is to offer brief explanation of terms and phrases which his reader may need to have in mind in order to comprehend the text.  It is a remarkably thorough accomplishment, especially given the fact that Zwingli had seen the clouds of war rising in the west and would soon find himself down the road a day’s journey at Kappel-am-Albis where his life would end 8 short months later.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen the commentary cited in any modern exegesis of Jeremiah or Lamentations.  That’s really quite a shame, since it’s actually quite useful.
