In 2022 Matthew Coomber tweeted
Norman Gottwald, dear friend & mentor, has passed [on Mar 11, 2022][JW]. Last night he entered eternity & will be sorely missed by so many. A kind soul & brilliant scholar, he had a thirst for justice that never rested. Neither shall we, Norman. Rest in peace.
His papers at SBL were always must attend and he was a cordial and collegial conversationalist afterward. I’m privileged to say that I was able to have several with him. He is missed.
