A pastor from Virginia was convicted Tuesday of helping a woman flee the country three years ago, when she was on the brink of having to turn custody of her young daughter over to the woman who was once her partner in a Vermont civil union. The jury issued its verdict against the Rev. Kenneth Miller after several hours of deliberations in the case, which has drawn broad attention because of the legal and religious questions it raised about same-sex unions and child custody, and because the mother and daughter remain at large.
Pastor’s aren’t called to help people- any people- evade their legal responsibilities.
Prosecutors said Kenneth Miller, a Mennonite, arranged for another person to drive Lisa Miller and Isabella from Virginia to Buffalo, N.Y., where they crossed into Canada and were picked up by an Ontario Mennonite who took them to the airport for a journey to Nicaragua. After they arrived in the Central American country, the two were apparently cared for by American Mennonites who felt they needed to protect Isabella from what they considered to be a sinful lesbian lifestyle.
The lifestyle of the litigants is immaterial. Pastor’s shouldn’t take part in criminal acts. Period.
Our culture… sick. Sick to the very bone. Watch the news video. And weep. Or if you’d rather read about it and weep–
A 5 year-old is accused of stabbing three people in Virginia. It happened Monday afternoon at a mobile home park in Greene County. Police say the little boy used some sort of edged weapon. Neighbors believe the incident started over a juice box. Two children and one adult were taken to the hospital with non- life threatening injuries.
The Washington Post is reporting that for years the Dover Air Force Base mortuary, which handles the bodies of America’s war dead, has been burning some troops’ body parts and dumping the ashes in a Virginia landfill.
People need to lose their jobs. That is one of the most despicable things I’ve ever heard of the military do.
Air Force officials told the Post today that some dead troops’ body parts were sent to the landfill from 2003 until 2008 and that the manner of disposal was “typically withheld from the relatives of fallen service members.”
Yeah I wonder why… Despicable. We send our children to die in senseless conflicts and when they return in coffins we treat their remains like garbage? OUTRAGEOUS.
This is so offensively stupid:
Virginia’s Board of Education is expected today to hand off legislation to local school districts allowing them to add gun safety to elementary school curriculum. The state’s General Assembly approved a measure last April that required the Board of Education to design course materials in line with the National Rifle Association’s Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program guidelines to teach elementary students about gun safety. The curriculum includes lessons ranging from distinguishing those who use guns professionally to recognizing and catching firearms on school property, WTVR reports. Individual districts will be able to decide whether to adopt the curriculum.
I thought Virginia was better than Texas. I was wrong. Kids can’t learn math and english and reading and history as it is, and now, guns? A course on guns???? Idiots.
Though it was inevitable that we would hear of criminals looting in the midst of the hurricane it doesn’t lessen the shameful and despicable character of that act.
Police arrested two people for looting about 4 p.m. Saturday in the Sandbridge section of Virginia Beach, city spokeswoman Mary Hancock said. Police received a report of intruders in an unoccupied, damaged house about 3:50 p.m. and detained two people about 20 minutes later, she said. Further details were not yet available.
They should be pilloried in public.
A Fourth Grade history text approved by a panel of three fourth grade teachers (and not historians) has been adopted for use in Virginia. But there’s a problem: it’s wrong about a significant aspect of the Civil War.
As Kevin Sieff reported in The Washington Post on Wednesday, historians are wondering how a fourth-grade textbook in Virginia was approved despite including the spurious claim that “Thousands of Southern blacks fought in the Confederate ranks, including two black battalions under the command of Stonewall Jackson.” Asked about her sources, the textbook’s author, Joy Masoff — whose other books include “Fire!” and “Oh Yikes! History’s Grossest, Wackiest Moments” — cited Ervin Jordan, a University of Virginia historian who is the author of “Black Confederates and Afro-Yankees in Civil War Virginia.” Like other noted historians, Mr. Jordan told The Post that while there is documentary evidence that some African-Americans fought for the Confederacy, “There’s no way of knowing that there were thousands…. And the claim about Jackson is totally false.”…
Perhaps historians should examine history texts and mathmeticians should examine math texts, etc. before such books are approved for school use. Otherwise, dilettantism reigns.
