Because this is precisely the kind of thing about which we should be protesting, raising our voices, standing as one. For these women, for the Palestinians, for the people of Tibet. These are worthwhile causes, truly.
Just weeks after Channel 4 News spoke to women in Somalia who said they had been raped in camps in Mogadishu, a Somali human rights worker, who wants to remain anonymous, writes about why ”the world needs to wake-up” to the increasing danger for women. Since the report aired there’s been a huge outcry in Somalia. Some are saying rape is not a problem in the country. But the truth is, it’s worse that the Channel 4 News report showed. Wake up, Americans. Stop obsessing about what YOU want and think about someone else for a change.
More Americans fell below the poverty line last year, according to U.S. Census Bureau data released Tuesday. The nation’s poverty rate rose to 15.1% in 2010, up from 14.3% in 2009 and to its highest level since 1993. Last year marked the third year in a row the rate increased. All told, 46.2 million people are considered in need. In addition, real median household income last year was $49,445, a 2.3% decline, the Census Bureau reported.
So while the rich continue to get richer (thanks, Republicans!), the poor are getting poorer and there are more of them. Pretty soon we can be Somalia. Thanks Greed!
An entire generation of Somalians are being exterminated.
The UN’s statistics are appalling. Tens of thousands of dead Somali children, 3.7 million people in urgent need of help. The “f” word – famine – back in Somalia after a twenty year absence. Last time hundreds of thousands died. And now a new generation is dying in their place. A scandal for the 21st century, in a country so dangerous to report from that its mounting death toll still lies largely hidden from the outside world.
Please read Jonathan’s report. It matters. And a lot more than a bunch of overpaid jocks and their even more overpaid owners antics.

Risk 1. If we fund aid in Somalia some will end up with militants affiliated with Al Qaeda. Risk 2 if we don’t, tens of thousands more
The risk of tens of thousands of deaths far outweighs the risk of Al-Qaeda getting some funds. We’ve got to stop letting fear of what ‘might happen’ in terms of terrorism determine policy. If the terrorists dictate our behavior, they’ve already achieved their goal. The needs of the many suffering in Somalia far outweigh the needs of the few.
- Famine ravages Somalia (theglobeandmail.com)
Gaddafi was minding his own business and his people rose up against him and within days the West was panting after the chance to send weapons in to help the poor benighted rebels. But that’s because Libya has oil.
But Somalia doesn’t have any oil. It just has black people. And so, as far as the West is concerned, it isn’t all that important. Indeed, if it were Israelis suffering drought, AIPAC would have loaded up as many planes as necessary and shipped as much water in as was needed. Somalia has no such ally though, to the eternal shame of the entire First World.
Tens of thousands of people are fleeing drought and famine in Somalia in search of food and water in refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia. The crisis has been brought on by a deadly combination of severe drought, with no rain in the region for two years, a huge spike in food prices and a brutal civil war in Somalia, where it is too dangerous for aid workers to operate. Somalians are walking as far as 50 miles to reach the Dadaab complex in eastern Kenya, the largest refugee camp in the world. The trek can take weeks through punishing terrain, which is desolate except for the carcasses that litter the land.
Here where something good could be done, nothing is (by comparison). In Libya and Iraq and Afghanistan, where nothing good can be done (due to the corruption of the governments in power) we’re pouring billions and billions of dollars worth of aid in. It’s a messed up world we live in where military aid is deemed more important strategically than helping ease the sufferings of an entire population.
If Somalia had oil or some other resource we wanted, we would care. So sorry Somalia. Good luck.
We have our own little Somalia going on up in Chicago with gun violence in epidemic proportions and kinds between 5 and 17 being regular victims. NPR reports
In Chicago, nearly 700 children were hit by gunfire last year — an average of almost two a day — and 66 of them died. That number is up over the previous year, even though the overall number of homicides in Chicago fell last year to a 45-year low.
700 kids shot in a year. 2 a day. 66 dead. What absolute unhinged lunacy. NPR is talking about the issue all week. Tune in.
A Somali militant group publicly executed two teenage girls Wednesday after accusing them of being spies for the Somali government, according to the group, eyewitnesses and a relative of one of the girls. “Those two girls were evil and they were spies for the enemy (the Somali government), but the mujahedeen caught them and after investigation, they admitted their crime, so they have been executed,” said Sheikh Yusuf Ali Ugas, commander of Al-Shabaab in Beledweyne, a town in central Somalia. The teens were blindfolded with their hands behind their backs against a tree, and shot, according to a local journalist. A resident of Beledweyne told CNN that Al-Shabaab called on the town’s residents to come out and watch the execution. “Hundreds of people came out to watch the execution,” he said. “It was very bad … the girls looked shocked and were crying but [no one] could help.”
Only 4 words describe these men… totally depraved cowardly murderers. Such barbarity and inhumanity. Shocking.
