Near the Anniversary of Zwingli’s Death… His Major Writings

Over at Logos

It’s surprising that Huldrych Zwingli isn’t better known. Zwingli, a contemporary of Martin Luther’s, was an important figure in the Swiss Reformation.

No kidding!  It is surprising that he isn’t better known.  He should be as well known as Luther and Calvin (and one of my life-goals is to make sure he is).

So, go right now and order this 7 volume set.  You won’t regret it.  And you will even notice that one of the volumes is by someone you know.  That’s right.  Go now and if you don’t want it for yourself get it for your Pastor.  Don’t allow him to wallow in ignorance one more day.

Have a Happy ‘Luther Finally Caught Up to Zwingli, 2 Years Later’ Day

Happy Lutheran Reformation Day.  Luther was 2 years late as the initiator of Reformation- Zwingli having begun work in that direction in 1515.  So, congrats, Lutherans- just as was true at Barmen- while the Lutherans slept, the Reformed worked.

According to his own testimony, it was in 1515 that the ‘reformatory’ spirit began to stir in his heart so that when he moved to Einsiedeln (in 1516) to serve the congregation there, he was already pursuing the beginnings of Reformed thought.*

An Open Letter to the Emmanuel Christian Seminary Concerning Christopher Rollston

To Whom it May Concern,

I cannot, at the present moment in time, imagine why Christopher Rollston has come under fire from certain quarters simply because his views are intelligent, refined, dignified, honest, truthful, insightful, brilliant, and recognized around the world as authoritative.

If I may, to help you see things from a broader perspective, point out to you several facts which you should certainly be aware of:

1- Professor Rollston is widely and universally positively regarded and highly respected by his peers, colleagues, and even opponents in the academic world.  You are, and I assure you of the truth of this fact, blessed, in every sense of that word, to have him on your faculty.  Let me say that again, you are blessed to have him there.

2- His anemically unintellectual attacker should be ashamed of himself for his cowardly and underhanded manipulative attempts to persuade you otherwise.  No one brings more to the table than Chris when it comes to honest and genuinely useful interpretation of the linguistic facts.  Certainly not his enemy in this case!

3- If you were to survey people in the field of epigraphy and ask them whose opinion and interpretation they trust, Chris’s name will come up, I guarantee, in the top three every time and most likely his will be the first name mentioned.

In this, a humble – open – public – and plain letter I appeal to you to see with open eyes that the only motivation behind this scurrilous, shameful, scandalous attack on Prof. Rollston is crass and disreputable sub-Christian jealousy, impure and simple.

Therefore I urge you, in the plainest language possible, to stand up for Prof. Rollston publicly, loudly, and immediately.  Your reputation as an institution of higher learning is at stake.

If you stand by and allow this contemptible attack to continue unanswered, I can faultlessly assert that you will be seen as a school where petty jealousy determines policy, and that, dear friends, would be a true and authentic tragedy.

Yours most sincerely,

Jim West, ThD
Adjunct Professor of Biblical Studies, Quartz Hill School of Theology
Pastor, Petros Baptist Church

I Have ‘Arrived’: I Made Mention by the BBC

Who knew…  Anyway, it’s really all down hill from here.  Mention by the BBC?  I can die now.

Harvard divinity professor Karen King unveiled the 4th-Century Coptic script at a conference in Rome. She said researchers had identified the words “Jesus said to them, ‘my wife'”, which might refer to Mary Magdalene. Christian tradition holds that Jesus did not marry – but Ms King said in early years it was subject to debate. The provocative find could spark debate over celibacy and the role of women within Christianity, she added. But the announcement sparked scepticism from some theologians. Jim West, a professor and Baptist pastor in Tennessee, said: “A statement on a papyrus fragment isn’t proof of anything. It’s nothing more than a statement ‘in thin air’, without substantial context.” Wolf-Peter Funk, a noted Coptic linguist attending the same conference as Ms King, said there were “thousands of scraps of papyrus where you find crazy things,” and many questions remained about the fragment.

It’s good to be so beloved.  Take that. Tilling!

Quote of the Day

Jim West’s blog deservedly outranks everyone else because he writes like a real person, puts on few airs and graces (except for an insufferable tendency to link to foreign language sources without warning), suffers from no false modesty, and his writing style has an “edginess” to it that slaps you around sufficiently to grab your attention. — Gavin Rumney

Tom’s Right, But Even More, Real Academics Don’t Peddle Fraud!

As Elkington and his ‘lead codices’ consortium is attempting to do.

According to Elkington (bold and italicized), who we all know is the erudite, scholarly fellow (/sarcasm): Regarding the omission of academic postings on this site, it was set up to release news into the public sphere (due to significant demand) and not as an academic forum (real academics tend not to use Facebook and are not bloggers! – They respectably keep their counsel, which is why they haven’t participated directly on this site, although th … Read More

It’s Tuesday- Time to See How Far Joel’s Behind in the Only Rankings that Matter… Alexa

The month of July always sees a plunge in readership, Joel.  Don’t be dismayed.  The 4th and the week leading up to and the week following see lots of folks on vacation, bloody pagans.  And apparently they’re just too busy to read important blogs and would rather spend their time reading rubbish on their feckless kindles and nooks and other demonic devices.

But even with that said- Joel, you’re WAY behind in all three categories (7 day, one month, three month).  And yet you’re still miles ahead of all the rest of the true (male SBL member) bibliobloggers and the false (female, pretendo- and dilly) bloggers.

Now where did all the braggarts go who said they were on the rise?  Peter Kirk, how far have you fallen?    Because, it’s Tuesday, it’s time for you lot to despair and lose hope of ever genuinely being
