Reason Is a Good Thing, Unless it Becomes an Idol

And to make sure that it doesn’t, Luther advises us to

“…see to it that you hold reason in check and do not follow her beautiful cogitations. Throw dirt in her face and make her ugly.”

Reason, as good, beautiful, and useful as she is, can become, again in Luther’s words, a ‘whore’ which leads astray.  Trust God, not self and certainly not the idols created by your own mind.  Trusting something your mind invents is the most foolhardy of all the follies.  After all, reason isn’t God, God is.  Reason isn’t infallible and can only be trusted so far.

The Folly of Vanity

Vanity isn’t just foolish, pointless, and silly- it’s deadly.

A south suburban Chicago woman died Thursday after injecting hot beef fat into her face around her mouth and chin, a procedure she had apparently self-administered multiple times before.  Janet Hardt, 63, of the 1000 block of West 186th Street in Homewood, Ill., reportedly went to Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest Thursday with complaints that her face felt like it was burning and had become singed, CBS Chicago reports. She was pronounced dead at 6:25 p.m.

The quest for a youthful appearance resulting in an early death…  Sadly ironic and hopefully a cautionary tale to other vain souls tempted to do foolishness.
