British lawmakers on Tuesday voted overwhelmingly in favor of a bill to legalize same-sex marriage championed by Prime Minister David Cameron, despite stronger-than-expected opposition from within his Conservative Party.
In a first House of Commons vote, lawmakers voted 400 to 175 in support of the legislation. There was strong support from the left-leaning Labour Party and Liberal Democrats party, but many Conservatives rejected the proposals.
The bill will have to go through more detailed parliamentary debates and a vote in the House of Lords, where a vote in favor is likely given the strong support Tuesday. If it becomes law, the proposed bill would enable same-sex couples to get married in both civil and religious ceremonies, provided that the religious institution consents.
Sigh. See what Calvin looks like? That’s my present expression.
So, the Archbishop- on the cusp of retirement- has decided to speak his mind. One question that hasn’t been raised and that clearly should have been is – why did he wait so long? What was he afraid of? Or worse, why did he worry more about political repercussions than he did in speaking the truth?
The world is filled with people who don’t say or do the right thing until they are sure that there will be no personal consequences. I find that just a tad cowardly. Speak the truth come what may. That’s the sort of people the world needs.
Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, has said his country has too many foreigners.
But why? Why would he say such a thing and why are many Europeans of the same impression?
His message might appeal to right-wing voters who believe the country is being flooded with foreigners, but is he correct in his assertion that the system to integrate immigrants is simply failing? … Last February, David Cameron, the British prime minister, said the doctrine of state multiculturalism had encouraged segregation: “We have encouraged different cultures to live separate lives apart from each other and the mainstream. We have failed to provide a vision of society to which they feel they want to belong.”
And he’s right isn’t he. Europe is filled with ghettos where different ethnicities live in isolation from one another.
In October 2010, Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, announced that the multicultural society had failed: “Of course the tendency had been to say ‘let’s accept the multicultural concept and live happily side by side, and be happy to be living with each other’. But this concept has failed, and failed utterly.” So, why are European leaders increasingly saying that multiculturalism is a mistake? And what are the alternatives for a diverse continent?
It has failed and I know why- because multiculturalism leads to disintegration rather than integration. It leads to fragmentation rather than community.
If one wishes to live in France, one should become French. If in Denmark, Danish. If in Britain, British. If in Germany, German. And if in America, American. Multiculturalism is a miserable failure because it divides and division is the last thing the world needs these days.
The Telegraph has a really engaging essay from first hand of the London riots.
A police officer, whose anonymous blog has captivated thousands, tells of his shock, exhaustion and terror after confronting the mob. I have worked every night and every day this week. Since last Saturday, when I was on the streets of Tottenham in north London in the early hours as rioting and looting broke out, through to the early hours of yesterday morning. I have clocked up around 125 hours, too many of them being pelted by stones, petrol bombs and, in one case, in the chaos of it all, by a 4ft ornamental palm tree.
Do read it all. My one reservation is that the author is an anonymous officer. I hope he doesn’t turn out to be a fraud like Damascus Lesbian Girl did. Now and forever all anonymity online implies fraud at some level in my estimation.
They’re all looters during the recent London riots!
Among those arrested are a straight-A Exeter University student whose family wealth makes it unlikely she would loot out of necessity, and a 24-year-old college graduate and aspiring social worker whose mother said, “She didn’t want a TV. She doesn’t even know why she took it,” according to The Daily Mail.
Then she’s just an easily led by the nose mob follower isn’t she mom.
Daniel Knowles at The Telegraph argues that, “Many of these criminals are no different from [liberal politician] Nick Clegg, who at the age of 16 narrowly escaped a conviction in Germany for setting fire to a professor’s cactus collection for a ‘drunken lark.’ Or, for that matter, from the Bullingdon Club, of which David Cameron and [London Mayor] Boris Johnson were members, which goes around smashing up restaurants.
Oh come on Knowles, bad behavior by old folk is no excuse for bad behavior by young folk. Stop making excuses for wickedness and depravity. That’s the problem; people aren’t held responsible.
The Guardian reports
Sean Hoare, the former News of the World showbiz reporter who was the first named journalist to allege Andy Coulson was aware of phone hacking by his staff, has been found dead, the Guardian has learned. Hoare, who worked on the Sun and the News of the World with Coulson before being dismissed for drink and drugs problems, is said to have been found dead at his Watford home. Hertfordshire police would not confirm his identity, but the force said in a statement: “At 10.40am today [Monday 18 July] police were called to Langley Road, Watford, following the concerns for welfare of a man who lives at an address on the street. Upon police and ambulance arrival at a property, the body of a man was found. The man was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after.
Now that’s suspicious. I wonder who had him hit and made it look like an ‘overdose’. Lot’s of people in the Government and police have been embarrassed. Not to mention the Murdochs and their servants.
Murdoch of Rupert fame and Brooks of News of the World Fame. You know, the vile people whose employees hacked a dead girl’s phone and listened to her voicemail…
Until now it has been easy to argue that Mr Cameron was properly grounded with a decent set of values. Unfortunately, it is impossible to make that assertion any longer. He has made not one, but a long succession of chronic personal misjudgments.
He should never have employed Andy Coulson, the News of the World editor, as his director of communications. He should never have cultivated Rupert Murdoch. And – the worst mistake of all – he should never have allowed himself to become a close friend of Rebekah Brooks, the chief executive of the media giant News International, whose departure from that company in shame and disgrace can only be a matter of time.
You show me your friends, and I’ll show you who you are. And Cameron’s friends are reprehensible low-life willing to do anything for a Pound.
Lie to make points with the ignorant
What other purpose could his insane shot at Oxford serve but to gather the mouth breathing anti-intellectuals in Britain to his side?
British Prime Minister David Cameron made headlines on Monday when he criticized Oxford University for their “disgraceful” minority admissions statistics. Cameron, who is an Oxford graduate, claimed that only one black person was admitted to the University in the past year. “We have got to do better than that,” said Cameron at a Q & A session in the North of England. Oxford responded immediately, calling Cameron’s assertion “incorrect and highly misleading.” According to figures the university provided to the media, the school actually accepted 27 black students between 2009 and 2010. Oxford also stated that only 542 black students received high enough A-level scores to be considered for admission in 2009, and that most black students apply for commonly over-enrolled courses, such as medicine.
Politicians- they’re even greasy and deceptive in other countries.
As Dishonest as America's Politicians
Are surely right to be outraged, since their futures are in the hands of middle aged men who received free educations who have decided to triple the fees that today’s students must pay. That’s simply wrong.
But they are wrong to destroy property or attack people. Such violence proves nothing but that hoodlums who should act better aren’t and no amount of education can change a beast into a lord.
Lessons need to be learned from a security lapse which allowed protesters to attack the Prince of Wales’s car, Prime Minister David Cameron has said. Those responsible for the violence at Thursday’s student protest must feel the full force of the law, he said. Prince Charles, whose car window was smashed as he and Camilla headed to a theatre, said he “totally understood” the difficulties police faced. MPs pushed through plans to raise the maximum tuition fee level to £9,000. But 21 Lib Dems voted against the proposals, slashing the government’s majority. Business Secretary Vince Cable has said the Lib Dems are still “united” despite the rebellion.
