The 11th Anniversary of 9/11

Everyone will doubtless be sharing their remembrances today.  I shan’t.  Oh it’s not that I don’t remember the day, I do.  It’s emblazoned on my memory as few things are.  Instead, I’ll be pondering what our country has accomplished since then.

We invaded Iraq, lost thousands more of our own young people, and who knows how many Iraqis died.  We invaded Afganistan and are still mired down there, where thousands more of our children have died along with many thousand more Afghanis.  Neither country can be counted a true friend to the U.S. in spite of the fact that we spend more on them than we do on our own people.  We provide them medical care, but not our own citizens.  We build them schools and roads and we can’t afford to build our own.

We are no safer now than we were on September 10th, 2001.  Our enemies are still plotting to destroy us but do they really need to try all that hard?  We seem to be doing a pretty good job destroying ourselves, since we keep electing the same incompetent politicians to lead us down the path of economic armageddon.

We’re paying more for everything thanks to our wars and the higher cost of oil, the fuel that drives us and by which we are driven in nearly every policy decision we make.

And I’ve not yet even mentioned the continuing moral decay of our citizenry; a people for whom good is evil and sin is celebrated and depravity is exalted more than righteousness.

In sum, the only thing that really changed on 9/11 is that thousands died and tens of thousands more have died in the wake of that event.  We are no better as a people.  We haven’t been improved by our disasters.  We haven’t learned the lessons of history and we are, therefore, doomed to repeat it.

War Stinks to High Heaven

Following is a speech for Antikriegstag 2012 in Bremen, by Martin Warnecke, Pastor und Friedensbeauftragter der Bremischen Evangelischen Kirche.

And the rest… War really does stink.

Radical Islam’s Fanatical and Unbalanced, Hate Filled Misogyny

Some 125 girls and three teachers were admitted to an Afghanistan hospital on Wednesday after being poisoned in their classes with a type of spray, a Takhar provincial official said.  The incident occurred in the provincial capital of Talokhan, in the Bibi Hajera girls school, said Dr. Hafizullah Safi, the province’s director of public health.  Forty of the girls were still hospitalized, he said, with symptoms including dizziness, vomiting, headaches and loss of consciousness.

It stinks of the deeds of the Taliban.

“The Afghan people know that the terrorists and the Taliban are doing these things to threaten girls and stop them going to school,” said Khalilullah Aseer, spokesman for Takhar police. “That’s something we and the people believe. Now we are implementing democracy in Afghanistan and we want girls to be educated, but the government’s enemies don’t want this.”  There have been several instances of girls being poisoned in schools in recent years. In April, also in Takhar province, more than 170 women and girls were hospitalized with suspected poisoning after drinking apparently poisoned well water at a school. Local health officials blamed the acts on extremists opposed to women’s education.

They’re really afraid of girls aren’t they, those wretched hate-monger cowards.  The Taliban- lovers of ignorance and murderers of the innocent.

10 More Years Worth of American Tax Dollars Will Be Flushed Down the Toilet Called Afghanistan

The US and Afghanistan have at last agreed on the broad contours of a strategic partnership agreement outlining their relationship after US troops leave in 2014. In it, the US pledges to continue providing support for the Afghan government for another ten years, the New York Times reports. The exact level of financial aid isn’t specified, since Congress must approve that, but the figure being bandied about is $2.7 billion a year, including contributions from other NATO countries.

Thanks for the quagmire, Washington.  Perhaps since you’re the people who want to do it, you should pay for it out of your own pockets.

Even More Excruciating Details of the Staff Sergeant Who Went on a Killing Spree in Afghanistan

The AP has a number of eyewitness statements- including

In Panjwai district on Sunday, grieving residents tried to make sense of why they were targeted.  “No Taliban were here. No gunbattle was going on,” cried out one woman, who said four people were killed in the village of Alokzai, all members of her family. “We don’t know why this foreign soldier came and killed our innocent family members. Either he was drunk or he enjoyed killing civilians.”  The other 12 dead were from Balandi village, said Samad Khan, a farmer who lost all 11 members of his family, including women and children. Khan was away from the village when the attack occurred and returned to find his family members shot and burned. One of his neighbors was also killed, he said. “This is an anti-human and anti-Islamic act,” Khan said. “Nobody is allowed in any religion in the world to kill children and women.”  One woman opened a blue blanket with pink flowers to reveal the body of her 2-year-old child, who was wearing a blood-soaked shirt.  “Was this child Taliban? There is no Taliban here” said Gul Bushra. The Americans “are always threatening us with dogs and helicopters during night raids.”

Who did it?  He’s still not been named but he’s a Staff Sergeant from Ft. Lewis, WA.

Residents said Sunday’s attack began around 3 a.m. in two villages in Panjwai district, a rural region outside Kandahar that is the cradle of the Taliban and where coalition forces have fought for control for years. The villages are about 500 yards (meters) from a U.S. base in a region that was the focus of Obama’s military surge strategy in the south starting in 2009.  Villagers described cowering in fear as gunshots rang out as a soldier stalked house after house firing on those inside. They said he entered three homes in all and set fire to some of the bodies. Eleven of the dead were from a single family, and nine of the victims were children.

Cowardly and despicable and dishonoring to all who have served ethically and honorably.

NPR has Further Details on the US Soldier Who Went on a Killing Spree in Afghanistan

What a horrid thing.

American officials say that a U.S. soldier in Afghanistan walked off a base in the pre-dawn hours Sunday morning and began shooting at civilians in their homes in the southern province of Kandahar.  …  As things look right now, Brig. Gen. Carsten Jacobson said at a news conference, the shooting spree “looks very much like an individual act.”  The AP reports that outraged villagers want the U.S. to hand over the detained soldier, but Jacobson made it clear that the investigation will be on American terms.

If it were an Afghan who was on American soil who murdered Americans and the Afghan’s wanted to try him, that wouldn’t fly would it.  When he decided to act illegally he decided to put himself into the hands of the justice system of the community he invaded.  He killed innocent civilians viciously- he should be handed over to the police.

“This, of course, is a legal case,” Jacobson said. “He is a U.S. soldier and it will fall to the United States authorities to investigate this case, but obviously ISAF is doing what is possible at the moment to deal with the consequences.”

That’s nonsense.  It’s another example of the US Military doing an injustice.  It’s imperialism.  No one can be surprised that Americans are hated when they see this kind of thing happen.

That’s Mass Murder

A U.S. soldier went on a shooting rampage in southern Afghanistan on Sunday, bursting into the homes of civilians in villages near his base in the middle of the night and killing up to 16 people, an Afghan minister told Reuters. Minister of Border and Tribal Affairs Asadullah Khalid, who is investigating the incident, said the soldier entered three homes, killing 11 people in the first one. Other Afghan officials said at least seven people died.

If true this is absolutely disgusting and the soldier responsible should be tried as a mass murderer.  Unstable kids with guns in foreign countries = inevitable disaster.

Meanwhile, Elsewhere…

Teen girls in Afghanistan who are forced to marry against their will are setting themselves on fire.

Flayed by a fire she began herself, Aatifa’s childlike frame is painstakingly wrapped in thick bandages — her shrieks of “Allah” echoing around the hospital ward where surgeons prepare to graft skin back on to her skeletal torso.

Her wide blue eyes alternating between flashes of anger and wells of tears, the 16-year-old Afghan girl struggles to explain what led her to douse her own body in petrol, step outside and light a match.

Married at the age of 14, the young carpet-weaver, who has nine brothers and sisters, said her mother-in-law criticised her housework and encouraged her mechanic husband to beat her for allowing her mother to visit too often.

She complained to authorities but was berated for causing trouble. Later told that her husband hated her and would marry a second woman, she swung between anger and depression before carrying out her masochistic deed.

Aatifa poured petrol over her head and, once outside her home, lit the flames that engulfed two thirds of her body. Her brother found her and smothered her with his clothes before neighbours took her to hospital.

Afghanistan… it’s a byword for misery.

When Did Terry Jones Move to Afghanistan?

Afghans protest outside Bagram air base, saying Muslim holy books were burnt, as local chief appeals for calm.

I thought Jones lived in Florida? How did he (or his insanity) manage to make it all the way to Afghanistan?

The US commander of international troops in Afghanistan ordered an investigation on Tuesday into the improper disposal of a large number of Islamic religious materials, including Qur’ans, at an American air base north of Kabul. More than 60 Afghans staged a morning demonstration outside the sprawling military installation saying the Muslim holy books had been burnt. “We are thoroughly investigating the incident and are taking steps to ensure this does not ever happen again,” US General John Allen, the top commander of US and Nato troops in Afghanistan, said in a statement. “I assure you, I promise you, this was not intentional in any way.” Allen said he received a report during the night that people working for the military coalition improperly disposed of the religious materials. He did not elaborate.

After everything that’s happened I wonder who’s big idea it was to incite anger for no reason whatsoever…

Afghani Barbarism

An Afghan militiaman strangled his wife for giving birth to a third daughter instead of a son, according to law enforcement authorities. The 28-year-old victim was killed in her home in the northern province of Kunduz by her husband and his mother just three months after the woman had the baby, reports the Guardian. The victim’s mother-in-law has been arrested, but the husband has fled. It’s uncertain who will care for the couple’s daughters. Two months ago, attackers in the same province poured acid over parents and three children after the parents refused to hand over their young daughter in marriage. The rejected suitor has been arrested.

Nothing the US and its allies have accomplished will make Afghanistan anything that it already isn’t.  Barbarism isn’t cured by war.  And a barbaric mindset isn’t erased by ‘Democracy’.

Why Are We In Barbarian-istan Again?

NZZ reports that a blast today in Kabul has killed 50.

Perhaps one day our government will hatch a sensible excuse as to why we remain in Barbarian-istan.  Sectarians there are hell bent (bent by hell itself) to destroy one another.  How can we stop that kind of insane hatred?

There Aren’t Any More Christian Churches in Afghanistan

Via Stuart

There is not a single, public Christian church left in Afghanistan, according to the U.S. State Department.  This reflects the state of religious freedom in that country ten years after the United States first invaded it and overthrew its Islamist Taliban regime.

[….]

In recent times, freedom of religion has declined in Afghanistan, according to the State Department.  “The government’s level of respect for religious freedom in law and in practice declined during the reporting period, particularly for Christian groups and individuals,” reads the State Department report.  “Negative societal opinions and suspicion of Christian activities led to targeting of Christian groups and individuals, including Muslim converts to Christianity,” said the report. ”The lack of government responsiveness and protection for these groups and individuals contributed to the deterioration of religious freedom.”  Most Christians in the country refuse to “state their beliefs or gather openly to worship,” said the State Department.

The Taliban won that war, didn’t they…

10 Years of Pointlessness

And one person ‘in the know’ says that we’ve only done the job in Afghanistan half way

The United States and its allies are “little better than” halfway towards their goals in the war in Afghanistan, which they began with a “frighteningly simplistic” view of the country, according to the former US commander Stanley McChrystal.

All for what?

The retired general said that even after ten years there was a shortage of the sort of knowledge that could help bring the conflict to a successful conclusion. His remarks came as a damning report was released by Jane’s which said the future of Afghanistan would still “hang in the balance” after the planned departure of allied combat forces by the end of 2014.

Afghanistan is a land of tribalism where conflict will NEVER end. There will NEVER be a cessation of strife there. The Brits got out, the Russians gave up, and now we’ve wasted a decade of resources and thousands of lives on a war we never could win if we occupied the entire country and had soldiers in every house in it.

Obama, the Nobel Peace Prize Winner… has out Bush-ed Bush in that wretched death-trap. History will mock the United States over our entanglement in Afghanistan- with good reason.

Afghanistan Can’t be Saved

The same primitive tribalism that existed before the Russians invaded still exists and as soon as US troops leave the country will devolve into civil war, again.  When the US leaves, Afghanistan will return to what it was before the US spent billions and wasted thousands of lives: a war torn land of tribalists.  We’ve done nothing but see our young killed in a land hardly worth one life.

And worst of all?

… the same factions that fought the last civil war are now vastly more powerful from all the wealth they’ve accumulated over 10 years of American-led aid.

That’s right- in essence we’ve paid to have our children killed.

Thank you, President Obama, for ‘fulfilling’ your promise to get us out of that death-trap.

Afghanistan: Slopping at the American Taxpayer’s Trough

It’s no surprise that the Afghan government is dependent on foreign aid to function. But it’s striking to contemplate just how dependent it has become.

According to a new analysis by the Government Accountability Office, the United States and other donors funded 90 percent of Afghanistan’s total public expenditures from 2006 to 2010. In fiscal 2010, the Kabul government’s entire domestic revenues came out to about $1.6 billion.

For comparison’s sake, since 2002, the United States has allocated over $72 billion to the mission in Afghanistan.

Read the rest and then ask yourself, who is it that profits from supporting a government of beggary?  Which of our politicians are getting kickbacks?  I don’t know about you but I can think of ways to spend that money here.

Barack Obama: The Best Republican President Since Ronald Reagan

The Washington Post informs us that

President Obama abruptly pulled back proposed new national smog standards Friday morning, overruling the Environmental Protection Agency’s efforts to compel states and communities nationwide to reduce local air pollution in the coming years or face federal penalties.

So let’s take stock: he’s pro-war (we’re still in Iraq and Afghanistan) ; he’s pro big business (hello Exxon and BP) ; he’s anti-environmental protection (see the link above) and his presidency is an utter failure so far as the average American is concerned.  He really IS the best REPUBLICAN President since Reagan.

Thank God, I can’t be blamed.  I didn’t vote for him (or McCain).

Widespread Wartime Waste

Waste and fraud in Iraq and Afghanistan has cost U.S. taxpayers as much as $60 billion and the tally could grow, according to a government study released Wednesday.

In its final report to Congress, the nonpartisan Commission on Wartime Contracting said lax oversight of contractors, poor planning and corruption resulted in losses of “at least $31 billion, and possibly as much as $60 billion” out of some $206 billion in total payments to contractors by the end of the current fiscal year.

“Much of the waste, fraud, and abuse revealed in Iraq and Afghanistan stems from trying to do too much, treating contractors as a free resource, and failing to adapt U.S. plans and U.S. agencies’ responsibilities to host-nation cultural, political, and economic settings,” the 240-page report read.

Your government being disgusting again and taking YOUR money (it’s yours, not theirs) and tossing it into the cesspool of war as wastefully as humanly possible.  Could anything be more absurd…  And your politicians doubtless got a kickback.

The Taliban are Servants of Satan

The Taliban has hanged an 8-year-old boy, in tragic retribution after the boy’s cop father refused to give militants a police vehicle, reports CNN. The child was kidnapped Friday in the southern province of Helmand, and killed at an unknown point after that. President Hamid Karzai condemned the boy’s execution, calling it an action “not permitted in any culture or any religions,” and calling for the immediate arrest of those responsible.

Human beings don’t kill children in order to ‘teach a lesson’ to parents.  Only inhuman tools of evil do.

If the divine messengers were to approach any modern Abraham living in many places on the planet and announce the just deserved destruction impending, that Abraham would have to argue down to the presence of one righteous soul if there were to be any hope of staving off divine wrath in recompense to human perversity.  And in most cases there’s not even one righteous person to be found.

Christians in Afghanistan…

Are very worried. World Magazine reports

“If U.S. troops are not in Afghanistan the Taliban will come to power,” said Obaid S. Christ, an Afghan Christian exiled to India who spoke to me Tuesday. “We will have the same situation we had in the 1990s when the Russians left Afghanistan, when we had civil war and millions killed.”

The exile, who changed his name and fled Afghanistan in 2007 after an Islamic court issued an arrest warrant following his conversion to Christianity, acknowledged that the U.S.-backed government headed by President Hamid Karzai has been no friend to Christian converts either. Earlier this year two civilian courts sentenced to death jailed Afghan Christians for changing their religion. After international pressure, including personal visits to one jail by U.S. and European diplomats, the two were released and allowed to leave the country. Both now reside in Europe.

There’s that law of unintended consequences again.

Obama’s Brief Speech

Was actually sensible, reasoned, well put, and impressive.  Let’s hope it’s lived out now.
