There are others of course but these are academic treasures that are on the side of truth and not beholden to ideologues of any stripe.
The Lutherans posted this meme:
So of course I had to track down the quote to see if it was right. And here’s what Luther actually wrote-
… “let us show the Holy Spirit the honor of conceding that He is smarter and wiser than we are with our infantile knowledge, and let us retain this doctrine in its purity in accord with Scripture.” — Martin Luther, Luther’s Works, Vol. 24: Sermons on the Gospel of St. John: Chapters 14-16, pp. 109–110.
The rest of the quote cannot be located (which means I suspect it is spurious).
It’s out in a couple of weeks! Sadly, orders can only be placed for delivery in Switzerland or Lichtenstein. 😦
You can, however, obtain it from the Germans here- if you’re in Germany…
“So then, some were shouting one thing and some another, for the assembly was in confusion and the majority did not know for what reason they had come together.” Acts 19:32
Mobs and majorities have in common that they often lack reason and righteousness. — Jerry Ireland
You need to read this if you are one of those GOP people cheering Trump.
After years of faithless Congresses legally but unconstitutionally ceding power to the presidency, we have arrived where we are today — a president who spends unappropriated funds, raises taxes, defies courts and changes immigration laws on his own. I have written before that the Republicans who rejoice in this will weep over it when a Democrat is in the White House. No president should have unconstitutional powers. I have also written that the guarantees of the Constitution — separation of powers foremost among them — are only effective when the folks in whose hands we repose the Constitution for safekeeping are faithful to their oaths to uphold it.

This is simply appalling.
The government’s call for a general election on October 15th was partly intended to restrict the number of students who would vote, an aide has reportedly admitted.
The Times reports that the team behind Boris Johnson’s election campaign having an early date would restrict the number of students registering to vote, with many being unable to provide their address until they are settled at the end of September.
According to the newspaper Number 10 believed if students remained registered at their home address it would be less of a threat to the Conservatives than if they register with their university address, as they are less inclined to vote.
Young people were credited with helping Labour to deny the Conservatives of a majority in the 2017 general election.
New figures reveal that more than one million people have registered to vote since Boris Johnson became prime minister, with 200,000 people alone signing up this week and nearly 100,000 signing up since the House of Commons vote on an election.
A majority of those applicants were aged 35 and under – with experts predicting more to register when an election date is agreed.
Young people of Britain, register and VOTE! The future, your future, is up to you.
With thanks to Richard Goode for posting the news story and the voter registration link.
A mechanic for American Airlines was arrested Thursday and accused of trying to sabotage a commercial airliner shortly before it was set to take off from Miami International Airport for the Bahamas with 150 people on board.
Abdul-Majeed Marouf Ahmed Alani has been charged with “willfully damaging, destroying, disabling, or wrecking an aircraft, and attempting to do so,” according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court. Alani allegedly tried to damage or disable the aircraft’s air data module (ADM) system, which reports aircraft speed, pitch and other critical data, on July 17.
On Thursday, investigators interviewed Alani and he “admitted that he accessed the ADM” and that he “inserted a piece of foam into the ADM’s inlet where the line connects and that he applied super glue to the foam so as to prevent the foam from coming off,” the complaint says. “Alani stated that his intention was not to cause harm to the aircraft or its passengers,” investigators say in the complaint. The court documents say Alani told investigators that he was upset over a contract dispute between union workers and the airlines, and the dispute had cost him money. Alani allegedly explained that he tampered with the aircraft so he could get overtime working on the plane.
The love of money is the root of every kind of evil.

Conference envy is a regular part of life- but now it has set in sturdily.
THIS is fascinating. Give it a listen.
We must not only do good to them that are familiar with us, but to them also whom we did never see before, in keeping hospitality for wayfaring strangers, so far as our substance will stretch to maintain it. For if otherwise thy wealth be slender, as that it will do no more but maintain thine own house and family, no parcel of God’s law doth bind or bid thee to distribute to other men the wealth which thou thyself dost need as much or more than they.
It is sufficient for thee to provide that they of thine own household be not a burden to other men’s backs. So then the man, whose wealth is small, is not compelled to spend that little which he hath in doing honour or shewing courtesy to other men: it is enough for him to bear with a valiant heart his own hard hap, and to take heed that his poverty procure him not to offend against right and honesty.
What does Bullinger mean? If you have the resources, help others. If you don’t, be sure you maintain your family so as not to be a burden to others so that they can aid the truly needy.
