Another ‘Jesus’ Special By the History Channel… Scheduled for March

It has a number of reliable scholars among the explainers, like Candida Moss, Nicola Denzey Lewis, Mark Goodacre, and Annette Yoshiko Reed; but it also has Joel Osteen and Miroslav Volf…  So it looks like a mixed bag.

Its approach also sounds a bit different:

HISTORY‘s eight-part event “Jesus: His Life” explores the story of Jesus Christ through a unique lens: the people in his life who were closest to him. Each of the eight chapters is told from the perspective of different biblical figures, all of whom played a pivotal role in Jesus’ life including Joseph, John the Baptist, Mary Mother of Jesus, Caiaphas, Judas Iscariot, Pontius Pilate, Mary Magdalene and Peter.

Each figure takes a turn guiding viewers through the emotional and epic story of the most famous man in history, through his birth, death and resurrection, all conveyed through a combination of scripted drama and interviews with prominent religious and historical experts.

I’m not sure where they’re going to get enough material to put words in the mouths of the likes of Pilate and Mary, given that they don’t really say all that much in the Gospels.

But maybe it will be ok…   Though given the track record of these things and the predominance of not actual scholars and ax griding agenda academics on the list of ‘explainers’ I’ll have to be skeptical until the series proves itself accurate.
