To replace a celebrity academic you have to be a celebrity academic. Qualifications? Piffle. Fame is the name of the game.
(This version of the post is much more pleasant)-
The conference will meet at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge (one of my favorite venues) but, alas, because I’ll be in Zurich in February I won’t be making it to SOTS this year. But you should go. You really should. It’s a superior conference with papers always worth hearing and a collegial and warm atmosphere throughout.
“He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. And I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name. “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”‘ (Rev. 3:12-13)
This is a must read. In part
[The NRA] is not the richest interest group. The National Association of Realtors has spent twice as much in the 2018 federal election cycle, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. It is not the largest interest group. It claims about six million members (probably an exaggeration); AARP has more than six times that number.
But the N.R.A. attracts incredible loyalty from its members. “That’s the critical thing people miss,” said Robert Spitzer, a political scientist at SUNY Cortland and the author of five books on gun policy. He said that the group combines a shared pastime with “ideological fervor.” “It’s a layer on top of a hobby,” he said. “It’s bowling plus fanaticism.”
All N.R.A. members receive a subscription to one of the organization’s magazines. We studied one of them, The American Rifleman, for clues about how the N.R.A. spurs its members’ zealotry.
Go read it all. It’s superb analysis. It concludes
One of the reasons the United States has so many gun deaths is the N.R.A. and its extremist defense of handgun ownership, almost without limit. The evolution of the covers underscores that a group once about hunting and outdoor sports has transformed itself into a far-right political organization that simultaneously professes patriotism and promotes a virulent hostility to any government efforts to save the lives of Americans dying from guns at a rate of one every 15 minutes.
Behold, the evolution of a terrorist organization (i.e., the use of terror to advance a political agenda).
UPDATE: Yes, fanatacism is the correct word. Since posting I’ve been literally bombarded by pro NRA pro Dana Loesch tweets. Thousands. And quite fanatical in their support of the NRA. It’s fascinating to watch the rabid reactions.
What he said nearly 500 years ago is just as true today:
When we were children, nothing disturbed us; we ourselves did indeed lead a more peaceful life, but the world has always been the same.
To be sure, it is true that in one era wickedness erupts more than in another, but this happens because different situations and greater opportunities exist for it to erupt; the wickedness of the world, however, always remains the same. Julius Caesar shook up the whole world because he had a great opportunity to do so; if Esau or Absalom had had such an opportunity, they would have done the same thing.
Therefore the evil in the world is always the same. See to it, then, that you have a peaceful and tranquil heart and that you do not get angry when you see this evil. You will never change the world, but see to it that you change into another kind of man.*

In my letter, I wrote to you that you should have nothing to do with people living immoral lives. I was not including everybody in this present world who is sexually immoral, or everybody who is greedy, or dishonest or worships false gods — that would mean you would have to cut yourselves off completely from the world. In fact what I meant was that you were not to have anything to do with anyone going by the name of brother who is sexually immoral, or is greedy, or worships false gods, or is a slanderer or a drunkard or dishonest; never even have a meal with anybody of that kind. It is no concern of mine to judge outsiders. It is for you to judge those who are inside, is it not? But outsiders are for God to judge. You must banish this evil-doer from among you (1 Cor. 5:9-13). — St Paul
You got it, brother. You got it…
Propaganda published on Facebook by Russian PR firms in an attempt to affect the 2016 US presidential election.
So if you shared that on facebook- you helped Russia influence the election. How’s it feel to be a Russian troll?
We’ll enjoy a bit of Leningradensis-
Just imagine how many different people we could hear from if folk at SBLwere actually limited to one paper. Just imagine how many new ideas we would hear if people didn’t think theirs were the only ideas that mattered and thus they needed multiple platforms…. Just imagine how enjoyable it would be is folk self regulated and only presented at one session….
So how come I’m the only person interested in real, practical, actual diversity at SBL?
Racists. It has never been about guns for the NRA it has been about white power.
