The Barthians are a Protective Lot…

And evidently they don’t like it when you remind them that their hero had faults.  And a mistress….

If You’re ‘Sending Your Prayers’ To People, You’re Doing It Wrong

The only proper recipient of prayers is God, because God is the only one who can do anything about what you’re asking.  If you’re sending your prayers to George Bush, or anyone else, it just means that you don’t understand what prayer is.

Leave Your Guns Laying Around Where Kids Can Get Them… Go Ahead

After all, what could go wrong?  You’re part of the ‘well regulated militia’, right?

A 3-year-old in Indiana accidentally shot her pregnant mother, leaving the woman in a critical but stable condition, local media reported.

The child shot Shaneque Thomas, 21, who police said is six weeks pregnant, in the shoulder Tuesday outside a Plato’s Closet thrift store in Merrillville.

Police said Menzo Brazier, the victim’s boyfriend and father of her two kids, ages 3 and 1, left his legal 9-millimeter handgun loaded in between the console and his front passenger seat before going in the store, according to Chicago station WFLD.

Admit it, America.  You like it or you’d put a stop to it no matter what it took.

Evangelicals Have no Future, Thanks to Their Connections with Trump

Apparently they don’t know it yet, but they have completely undermined themselves.  And all for political power.  Heretics.

No Matter How Much the Papacy Changes, It Remains Heretically the Same

And this Pontiff simply doesn’t have any idea what Scripture says.  At lease Benedict was an actual academic.

Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”  So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. (Lk. 18:18-19)

Things Melanchthon Said Before he Died

Dann Paulus spricht 1. Korinth. 2: Der naturlich Mensch vernimmt nichts vom Geist Gottes.

Russell Moore is Right- Evangelicals Have a LOT to Answer For

The leading Southern Baptist Russell Moore has said that US evangelicals are often more focused on the process of selecting presidential candidates than ‘the good news of Jesus Christ’ and called for the church to ‘thrive on the margins’.

In a hard-hitting lecture yesterday at Princeton University in New Jersey, Moore, the president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, said: ‘So often in 2018 America, evangelicalism is associated more with Iowa caucuses than the good news of Jesus Christ.’

Aside from the really idiotic phrase ‘The leading Southern Baptist…’ – geesh CT, you’re writers are getting to be unbearably ignorant- the essay rightly highlights Moore’s critique of Trumpianism.

In the comments, reported by the Daily Princetonian, Moore defined evangelicalism as ‘the link of renewal and revival movements which unite historic, conventional orthodoxy with the necessity of personal conversion and evangelism’.

He added that any true evangelical movement must be focused upon the Cross.

‘An emphasis on the Cross is one of the hardest thing to maintain in any Christian group, and that includes American evangelicalism,’ Moore said.

And he argued that many modern movements have strayed away from the values of the Cross, instead becoming ‘market focused’, preaching on topics that people want to hear about, but choosing to ignore other sins or issues in society that are less popular.

Etc.  Christians who replace the gospel with political attachments as the chief goal of their lives have lost the plot.  Probably because they never had it in the first place.

Pastors and Daycare Workers

Pastors are like day care workers and church ministry is like a daycare center; they both wipe noses and change diapers and listen to a lot of crying and at the end of the day they question all of their life choices. But they get up the next day and go back to it because when all is said and done, they love the little ones.

Things Melanchthon Said Before He Died

Deciphering Wild Biblical Archaeological Claims: An Introduction to The Bible & Archaeology

Now here’s an author you can rely on to be truly fair and truly balanced.

Hendrickson Publishers Blog

By Amy Paulsen-Reed, Assistant Editor and Sales Representative

Have you ever seen an archaeological headline that made a pretty fantastic claim? “We just found the prophet Isaiah’s hairbrush!” “Skeletons of horses in the Red Sea prove the truth of the Exodus!” When you’re scanning the news of the day with your morning cup of coffee, what are you supposed to think when you see headlines like this? You’d like some of them to be true, but you’re not an archaeologist—how are you supposed to form an intelligent opinion on these types of claims?

Enter Matthieu Richelle to the rescue. In the past, you’d have to understand French to read his handy little book, The Bible & Archaeology, but Hendrickson Publishers has had it translated into English and it is now available to the English-speaking world! (And in an up-to-date edition.)

Although I have a doctorate in Hebrew Bible…

Tomorrow is the Anniversary of Melanchthon’s Death

So expect to see a good bit of stuff about him today and tomorrow.  Because.

melanchPHILIP MELANCHTHON, or MELANTHON (often incorrectly spelled Melancthon), born 1497; professor at Wittenberg, 1518 to his death, 1560. The foundation of Lutheran Systematic Theology was laid in his Loci Communes Rerum Theologicarum seu Hypotyposes Theologicæ (1521), which had its origin in a brief outline prepared for his own private use, and afterwards dictated to his students as an introduction to his lectures on the epistle to the Romans. During the author’s life it passed through eighty editions, was greatly enlarged, and on certain points, as, for example, the Freedom of the Will, its doctrine was materially changed. For details, the English reader is referred to the article MELANCHTHON, prepared by the author of this sketch, in McClintock and Strong’s Cyclopædia, vol. vi. The collection of Melanchthon’s works in the Corpus Reformatorum affords the student the best facility for the critical study of Melanchthon’s theology. It contains a reprint of each of the principal editions, as well as of several translations of the Loci. — Schmid, H. (1889). The Doctrinal Theology of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Verified from the Original Sources, p. 665.

A new critical edition of Melanchthon’s works is in process as we speak.  The works to be included are all listed here.

Sad News: Michael Becker Has Died

From Loren Stuckenbruck just now-

R.I.P. My dear NT colleague, Michael Becker died this morning at 10.42 after suffering a terrible heart attack on 7 April. A sad day full of tears here in Munich. Becker authored a fantastic dissertation on Wunder und Wundertäter with Tübingen‘s Mohr Siebeck (2001). He was 60.

The Complainer

Via Ralph Keen-

Thanks to Rabbi Blum at Columbia for this one:

A man joins a monastery and takes a vow of silence. He’s allowed to say just two words every seven years.

After the first seven years, the elders bring him in and ask for his two words. “Cold floors,” he says. They nod and send him away.

Seven more years pass. They again summon him and ask for his two words. He clears his throats and says, “Bad food.” They nod and send him away.

Another seven years pass and they bring him in for his two words. “I quit,” he says.

“That’s not surprising,” the elders say. “You’ve done nothing but complain since you got here.”

Bullinger to Myconius- 18 April, 1534

At the end of a letter that Bullinger composed on the 18th of April, 1534, he remarks of Luther:

De Lutheri impudentia nuper libellis quibusdam de privata missa et in Erasmum scriptis (15) vehementer doleo. Video enim hunc hominem ecclesiae dei plus incommodaturum, quam profuerit unquam. Interim vero hunc omnibus in Europa doctis in evangelio praeferre non cessat Bucerus (16),miror, quo consilio. Oecolampadium, virum sanctissimum illum, praedecessore tuum, in istis furiosis rixis palam praedicat a sathana strangulatum periisse. Vide, quid monachus iste audeat. Dominus conservet nos in veritate (19). Iterum vale.

Luther could be a jerk.  Everyone knew it.  Even Luther.
