First Session

I enjoyed the papers I heard well enough.  Some thoughtful reflections and useful suggestions were made.  Looking forward to Jacob Wright’s paper tomorrow very much.  The rest will be good, but I’m pretty sure that will be the highlight.

The Gifford Lectures…

NT Wright is giving the Gifford lectures and citing wikipedia whilst doing it…. according to sources positioned to know…

Quote of the Day

There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties, each arranged under its leader, and concerting measures in opposition to each other. This, in my humble apprehension, is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution. – John Adams

A Few More Around and About

I’ve since tracked down the meeting rooms- the SBL sessions are on level T (in the basement) and the AAR sessions are on the 4th floor…

I wonder what SBL is trying to tell us…

Around and About the Conference Center

It’s a nice space and the rooms are all pretty close together, so that’s a plus.  So far, though, just three booksellers have set up tables.  I hope there are more and I hope there’s more than just display items.

SBL Southeast: I’m Here

I’ve checked in and will begin wandering the hotel in a few.  The room is nice, and Atlanta traffic is horrendous and brain killing.  More anon.

The Truth About Infant Baptism

Infant baptism is a consequence of Augustine’s idiotic understanding of original sin. It is the foolish belief that water removes sin and spares the wet one the misery of purgatory. None of which is true.

To Those Christians Who Live in Constant Fear of Attack and Chaos… And Find it Necessary to Militarize Themselves…

(Matt. 10:28)

You’re far more likely to be killed by a misused gun from your own home than you are by a home invader or other threat.

During NRA Conventions Gun Violence Sharply Declines…

Because, evidently, gun violence is perpetrated by members of the NRA and they’re busy at their convention.

Gunshot-related deaths and injuries temporarily show a dramatic decline when the National Rifle Association is holding its annual convention, according to a new analysis online February 28 in The New England Journal of Medicine.

The authors say it’s evidence that firearms – even in the hands of experienced users – are inherently dangerous and accidents don’t just happen among novices.

Dr. Anupam Jena of Harvard Medical School and Andrew Olenski of Columbia University compared firearm injuries during the conventions each year from 2007 through 2015 with injury rates three weeks before and three weeks after each event.

A decline of 63% was seen in the states where the conventions were being held, apparently due to large numbers of gun owners being at the events, as well as, in some cases, gun venues such as firing ranges or hunting grounds having closed while their staff attended the convention.

Nationally, there was a 20% reduction in firearm injuries during the convention.

So go ahead, draw your own conclusions.
