The Only Really Great Book Karl Barth Ever Wrote…

Was his little book on Mozart.

Nothing else Barth wrote even comes close.

Hey, Update that Church Website…

Don’t be like the sites the Bee stings…

While browsing the internet from his home office Friday morning, local man Robert Miller reportedly became excited upon discovering an announcement under the “Events” section of Discovery Community Church’s website which confirmed an upcoming 2009 church picnic.

“Picnic this week, eh?” Miller reportedly said to himself as he leaned back in his computer chair. “They didn’t mention this in last Sunday announcements.”

Failing to note the 2009 date on the event, reports indicate Miller excitedly began making preparations for the barbecue.

In addition to “Fun, fellowship, and food,” the nearly decade-old event details promised “Hot dogs, inflatables, face paint for the kids, and a special message from pastor Gary” as highlights of the church function.

“This is going to be awesome!” Miller commented on his church’s Facebook page, just after 9:00 a.m. “My kids love bounce houses, and Pastor Gary has been dead for three years!”

“Honey, I bet the tech team is planning to Tupac pastor Gary in with a hologram or something!” Miller reportedly shouted at his wife as she passed by the den.

Sources report Miller’s confusion was compounded when he discovered that the listed February 7th event date, which was a Saturday during Obama’s first year in the White House, now fell on a Tuesday. “11 a.m. on a weekday, huh? Well, I’ll just have to take off work, because I can’t miss the Ushers vs. Deacons Ultimate Frisbee game,” the churchman and avid picnic-goer said aloud.

As of publishing time, the 2009 Church Picnic event has been removed from the Discovery Community Church website, and sources within the Miller home report that Robert was last seen frantically calling the church office to find out why the picnic had been canceled.

It’s funny because there are loads of church websites just like that!

America’s Cult of Ignorance

Via Antonio Lombatti- this is more true now than it was in 1980.

“There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that ‘my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.” (“A Cult of Ignorance” by Isaac Asimov, NEWSWEEK – January 21, 1980, p. 19).

The Dark Side of Luther on Holocaust Remembrance Day

Enjoy.  And learn: Luther didn’t just have issues with the Jews- his dark side was multifaceted.

I Am Pro Life

I’m pro life.  I disdain abortion.  But I also disdain anti-refugee sentiments because they are not pro life.  Pro life means pro every life or it doesn’t mean anything at all.

Then he will say to those on his left hand, “Go away from me, with your curse upon you, to the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you never gave me food, I was thirsty and you never gave me anything to drink,  I was a stranger and you never made me welcome, lacking clothes and you never clothed me, sick and in prison and you never visited me.” Then it will be their turn to ask, “Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty, a stranger or lacking clothes, sick or in prison, and did not come to your help?”  Then he will answer, “In truth I tell you, in so far as you neglected to do this to one of the least of these, you neglected to do it to me.”  And they will go away to eternal punishment, and the upright to eternal life.’

Resistance

It would be stupid tameness, and unaccountable folly, for whole nations to suffer one unreasonable, ambitious and cruel man, to wanton and riot in their misery. And in such a case it would, of the two, be more rational to suppose, that they did NOT resist, than that they who did, would receive to themselves damnation. — Jonathan Mayhew
