Four Years Ago I Excoriated Theologians Who Endorse Politicians

Here.  Where I wrote “Pastors Have No Business Endorsing Any Politician, Ever”

But evidently some do- to their eternal shame.  And apparently politicians crave it.

Howard Fineman tweets

Bachman people privately complain that some pastors would not endorse her cuz of her gender

Again, pastors have no business endorsing politicians.  Pastors serve a prophetic role in that they are assigned by God the task of insisting on righteousness in society.

Preaching the gospel has NOTHING to do with climbing into bed with politicians of ANY stripe, flavor, or gender.  When pastors foolishly and ignorantly ignore their primary calling simply to dabble in political nonsense for the sake of public notice (and let’s admit it- that’s all in the world that endorsements are), they FAIL.

It was that damnable heretic Constantine who taught preachers to be agents of the state instead of Prophets of the Lord.  Curse him.  He single handedly managed to corrupt the church more than any other of history’s heretics.

When pastors become tools of the state, they abandon their purpose, calling, and right-function.

One can’t confront the state with the prophetic message of God out of one side of the mouth while out of the other congratulating it for its actions.  One can’t excoriate injustice and endorse the proponents of injustice- the very policy makers who systematically oppress the poor while enriching the coffers of their rich brethren.

Pastors should be like Nathan- pointing their finger in the face of power, and denouncing it!  Not like toadying sycophants who lap up the drippings of popularity from the drool-buckets of the politicos.

So, pastor, go ahead, endorse away.  But as soon as the words ‘I endorse…’ fly from your lips, the Spirit and calling of God fly from your life.

It’s nice to see many of you finally catching up to the fact that theologians endorsing politicians is utterly improper.  It took you long enough.  But at least you finally made it.

Quote of the Day

There will never be business as usual in Washington DC ever again. Your silence in the face of this shameful man has sealed it. Either un-endorse Trump now or let us never again hear you talk of the dignity of women, marriage, and family values. – Luma Simms

She writes that in an essay about the fact that in standing by Trump, conservative men have abandoned conservative women.  And she’s right.  Every man who supports Trump has well and truly turned his back on every woman in his life.

The Republican Woman Who, in 17 Tweets, Puts the Entire GOP in its Misogynistic Place

This. Is. Fantastic.  You can’t see me right now, but I’ve just been standing up applauding Marybeth Glenn- Republican woman who has fried the #GOP for its pathetic non-response to Donald *The Pervert* Trump.  I wish Marybeth would run for office in my area.  I’d vote for her.  A Lot.

Donald Trump isn’t the only one who can stay up late to tweet his displeasure. Early on Tuesday morning, Marybeth Glenn, a Wisconsin resident who tells ELLE.com she’s voted Republican ever since she could vote, expressed her grave disappointment in the Republican politicians still standing behind Trump.

In 17 fierce tweets, she decried the acts of the “cowards” who backed down from meaningful action against Trump in the wake of his recent horrific comments. Glenn laid out how she’s defended Republican politicians against claims of sexism, despite the disapproval of other women.

Glenn directed her tweets at prominent Republican politicians, including Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz. When asked what she wants from them, she says, “I truly hope that they come out saying they’ll stand with women, unendorse, and at this point I believe they owe us an apology if they ever want our support again.”

Read it all and all the tweets.  Brilliant.  Honest.  On point.  If only our elected officials had the sense and respectability of regular citizens.

The #GOP Establishment Supporters of Trump Don’t Deserve Either Pity or Forgiveness

Here’s why.

Of the remarkable things we have learned this election year, the most significant is that the current Republican Party is unfit to lead the country. It has failed the greatest test a political leader or party can face, and failed spectacularly. It has abandoned its principles out of a combination of cowardice and opportunism. It has worked to place in the White House the most dangerous threat to U.S. democracy since the Civil War. And perhaps just as revealing, it has in the process engineered its own suicide. Not only has the party refused to save the country, but also it has proved too helpless, too incompetent and too craven even to save itself.

A Zwingli Gallery on the Day We Remember His Life and Death

Martin Luther To Jerry Falwell Jr

Even if we were stones and wooden blocks, we could see by your works throughout all the world that you are lost, desperate children of the devil and also mad, crude asses in Scripture. Someone probably would like to curse you so that you might be struck down by lightning and thunder, burned by hellish fire, have the plague, syphilis, epilepsy, the plague of St. Anthony, leprosy, carbuncles, and all the plagues – but these are all caresses, and God has long ago punished you with greater plagues, just like God’s despisers and blasphemers should be punished.  — Martin Luther

Jerry Falwell Jr: A Despicable Non-Christian

untitled

There is nothing Christian about this political opportunist.  He knows nothing of righteousness, justice, faith, God, or Christ.

He completely discounts God and fails to even recognize that his absurd comment is the comment of the anti-christ, for it fails to take God into account.

God will remember.  That’s what Falwell should concern himself with and certainly what Trump should concern himself with.

Donald Trump Has Just Declared War on the #GOP…

And it gives me not a little Schadenfreude.  Because you guys chose him.  And you’ve stood by him.  And you deserve everything you’re going to get because of him.  We tried to warn you.  Pick Rubio.  Pick Bush.  Pick anyone.  But here he is, YOUR nominee.  I hope you feel as right stupid as you should.

With just one more presidential debate to go, Donald Trump seems more interested in settling scores with Republicans than winning the election.

That’s the understatement of the year.  And you did it to yourself Paul Ryan.  You did it to yourself Ted Cruz.  You guys are toast and your careers are baked.

I Wish, Bee… I Wish

Explaining that she waited as long as possible before firing, 700 Club co-host Terry Meeuwsen was nevertheless forced to tranquilize Pat Robertson once again during a taping for the show on Monday afternoon.

“It happened during the Q&A segment,” Meeuwsen explained to reporters. “A question came over from an elderly man about leaving his Alzheimer’s-ridden wife for one of her younger sisters. As you know, we’ve been down this road in the past, but that was before we had implemented our now-active Emergency Tranquilization Procedure.”

“So I saw Pat’s eyes glaze over a bit, like they do when he’s about to say something laughably un-Christian and generally horrific, and when he looked down, sneered, and slowly began to shake his head before offering his answer, I knew I had no choice. I grabbed the Terminator 48-inch, 40-caliber blowgun stored under my desk, raised it quickly, and fired one tranquilizer dart into his neck, effectively delivering the barbiturate and incapacitating him almost instantly.”

“Just like I said after last Friday’s incident: I do not enjoy having to put him down like this,” Meeuwsen added. “But believe me, it’s better than the alternative.”

Someone needs to do it for real.

Coming Soon: An Interview With Karen Jobes

Karen’s latest work is this one:

9780825443428Quick access to Septuagint vocabulary and syntax for students with two years of biblical Greek

Interest in the Septuagint today continues to grow stronger. Despite that interest, students have lacked a guidebook to the text similar to the readers and handbooks that exist for the Greek New Testament.Discovering the Septuagint: A Guided Reader fills that need. Created by an expert on the Septuagint, this groundbreaking resource draws on Jobes’s experience as an educator in order to help upper–level college, seminary, and graduate students cultivate skill in reading the Greek Old Testament.

This reader presents, in Septuagint canonical order, ten Greek texts from the Rahlfs—Hanhart Septuaginta critical edition. It explains the syntax, grammar, and vocabulary of more than 700 verses from select Old Testament texts representing a variety of genres, including the Psalms, the Prophets, and more.

The texts selected for this volume were chosen to fit into a typical semester. Each text (1) is an example of distinctive Septuagint syntax or word usage; (2) exemplifies the amplification of certain theological themes or motifs by the Septuagint translators within their Jewish Hellenistic culture; and/or (3) is used significantly by New Testament writers.

In a few weeks I’ll ‘sit down’ with Karen to discuss the book.  Stay tuned!

The Butchering of the Greatest Reformer By the Wretched Papists at Kappel-am-Albis

It happened on 11 October, 1531.  And it happened like this- once more- by Bullinger’s account:

On the battlefield, not far from the line of attack, Mr. Ulrich Zwingli lay under the dead and wounded. While men were looting . . . he was still alive, lying on his back, with his hands together as if he was praying, and his eyes looking upwards to heaven. So some approached who did not know him and asked him, since he was so weak and close to death (for he had fallen in combat and was stricken with a mortal wound), whether a priest should be fetched to hear his confession. Thereat Zwingli shook his head, said nothing and looked up to heaven. Later they told him that if he was no longer able to speak or confess he should yet have the mother of God in his heart and call on the beloved saints to plead to God for grace on his behalf. Again Zwingli shook his head and continued gazing straight up to heaven. At this the Catholics grew impatient, cursed him and said that he was one of the obstinate cantankerous heretics and should get what he deserved. Then Captain Fuckinger of Unterwalden appeared and in exasperation drew his sword and gave Zwingli a thrust from which he at once died. So the renowned Mr. Ulrich Zwingli, true minister and servant of the churches of Zurich, was found wounded on the battlefield along with his flock (with whom he remained until his death). There, because of his confession of the true faith in Christ, our only savior, the mediator and advocate of all believers, he was killed by a captain who was a pensioner, one of those against whom he had always preached so eloquently. . . .

The crowd then [Oct. 12] spread it abroad throughout the camp that anyone who wanted to denounce Zwingli as a heretic and betrayer of a pious confederation should come onto the battlefield. There, with great contempt, they set up a court of injustice on Zwingli which decided that his body should be quartered and the portions burned. All this was carried into effect by the executioner from Lucerne with abundance of abuse; among other things he said that although some had asserted that Zwingli was a sick man he had in fact never seen a more healthy-looking body.

They threw into the fire the entrails of some pigs that had been slaughtered the previous night and then they turned over the embers so that the pigs’ offal was mixed with Zwingli’s ashes. This was done close to the high road to Scheuren.

Verdicts on Zwingli from scholars and ignorant alike were varied. All those who knew him were constant in their praises. Even so there were still more who were critical either because they really did not know him or, if they had known him a little, were determined to show their resentment and spoke ill of him. (Janz, A Reformation reader : Primary texts with introductions.)

Because of his importance this passage is read each year in Zurich on the anniversary of his passing-

October 11 is the darkest day of the year; a day of mourning.  So don’t expect much chipperness from me today.
