Donald Trump isn’t the problem. He is just the symptom. Blaming him is like blaming the snot when you have a cold.
The problem is with a large segment of America. And that can’t be cured by hating the snot.

The idea that people who feel free trade agreements have taken their jobs away deserve to be sneered at and hated makes no sense. The hateful rhetoric was meant to persuade them, I think, not to care about their lost jobs (some people hate being hated so much that they change their minds at the slightest criticism). But people then just felt that Trump had their back and everybody else really did hate them. They doubled down. I know dozens of people who say this about their Trump support. I also know people who say nasty things about Trump supporters. When I ask them how many conversations they’ve had with Trump supporters the answer is usually…zero.
