The moment you attach the words ‘just’ or ‘only’ to the word ‘praying’ you betray absolute ignorance as to the theology of prayer.

Might I remind everyone that our own Timothy McVeigh killed twice as many people and injured over 600. He used a truck too. He wasn’t Muslim.
When a madman drives a truck into a crowd he isn’t a terrorist, he’s wicked. When a disgruntled unhappy man guns down people in a club he isn’t a terrorist, he’s evil.
When we use the word terrorist we are – unconsciously – giving these miscreants an out; we are providing them with a ready made defense because they can now respond to us ‘one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter. Americans fighting against the British in the Revolultionary War used the tactics of terrorism. Jews fighting for a homeland against the native Arab population used the tactics of terrorism. Those terrorists are now deemed heroes…’
But when we call them evil for maiming, killing, butchering, slaughtering they have no hiding place in which to retreat. They are robbed of their justification. Now, they are simply evildoers. Murderers. Killers. Child murderers.
The cold truth is, these people aren’t committing acts of terror because they are driven by some higher ideal which justifies itself as a means to an end. They are wicked monsters who, like all monsters, need to be put down for the benefit of all.
They aren’t terrorists, they’re the slaves of evil doing their vile master’s will.
A Pasco County teen is accused of a disturbing crime. Detectives say he raped a 3-year-old child at a daycare operated at his home. Lucius Isaiah Gibson, 16, known as Isaiah to friends, is accused of inserting his penis into the mouth of the child at his mother’s in-home daycare, Thomas Gibson Family Day Care. The alleged abuse happened during nap time, documents from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office show.
Unutterably evil. Such depravity is par for the course in our oversexualized ‘if it feels good do it’ ‘human life is cheap so abort that unwanted baby’ ‘you’re an animal evolved from animals’ culture.
We reap what we’ve sown more and more each day- the fruit of our national rebellion against Almighty God and his ethical/ moral demands. Truly did Paul write
The retribution of God from heaven is being revealed against the ungodliness and injustice of human beings who in their injustice hold back the truth. For what can be known about God is perfectly plain to them, since God has made it plain to them: ever since the creation of the world, the invisible existence of God and his everlasting power have been clearly seen by the mind’s understanding of created things. And so these people have no excuse: they knew God and yet they did not honour him as God or give thanks to him, but their arguments became futile and their uncomprehending minds were darkened. While they claimed to be wise, in fact they were growing so stupid that they exchanged the glory of the immortal God for an imitation, for the image of a mortal human being, or of birds, or animals, or crawling things. That is why God abandoned them in their inmost cravings to filthy practices of dishonouring their own bodies- because they exchanged God’s truth for a lie and have worshipped and served the creature instead of the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. (Rom. 1:18-25)
Authorities say the 3-year-old son of a Steamboat Springs police officer is dead after he accidentally shot himself at the family’s home. Steamboat Today reports the boy, whose name hasn’t been released, was with his parents at their home in the Stagecoach area when he was shot Thursday morning. The boy’s father and a friend drove him toward Steamboat Springs and were met on the way by paramedics, who took the boy to the hospital. Routt County Undersheriff Ray Birch declined to say if the boy was alone when he was shot or what kind of gun was involved. Birch also would not say whether the boy was shot with a gun issued by the police department.
Still haven’t learned have we. We never will. So let’s just all buy stock in funeral homes because the trend of dead kids is just going to continue unabated until the world ends.
NPR’s report on the women that Ailes has sexually harassed is simply awful. The sort of behavior Ailes has exhibited is just beyond decency and if something of the sort reported this morning ever happened to any of the women I know it wouldn’t matter how well positioned or wealthy the perpetrator. There would be serious repercussions.
Ailes is a serial predator, just like Cosby.
Our Annual Conference is 7 weeks away, and I can give notice that the Annual General Meeting of the British New Testament Society will take place on Friday 2nd September 2016 during the conference at the University of Chester at 7.15pm. Please do make every effort to attend.
The Committee will meet on Friday afternoon at 2.30pm.
Booking is going well for the conference; we have passed the 150 mark. Please note that bookings will close on Friday 12th August 2016. Please make sure you have booked by this date to help with the smooth running of the conference.
I have attached some travel information and maps. It is not my most polished creation (!), but if you wish to walk from the station it will help. However, the campus is a short taxi ride away and will cost around £5. The conference is on the main campus (or Parkgate Road campus). Travelling to Chester is pretty straightforward, and hopefully you should not have any difficulty reaching the campus. All the campus based conference venues are very close together. However, do note that New Testament and Early Christianity and Social World of the New Testament are having their Friday morning events at The Grosvenor Museum (27 Grosvenor Street, CH1 2DD), which is about a 20 minute walk through town.
Dr Sarah Whittle comes to the end of her term on the committee at the forthcoming conference, and there will be an opportunity for us to thank her at the AGM. This means there is one vacancy on the committee. Anyone who would like to consider being nominated may contact me. Please do be aware that we are attentive to trying to achieve balance on the committee in terms of gender, geography, type of institution etc.
There will be two additional events at this year’s conference (which I’ve pompously called the Conference Fringe). Both will take place on the free afternoon Prof. Philip Alexander will be giving a tour Chester Cathedral Library, speaking on “From the Age of Erasmus: Treasures of Biblical Scholarship in Chester Cathedral Library.” This will take place at 1.30pm in the Cathedral Library. Numbers are strictly limited to 25, but there are still a number of places available. If you wish to go (and the library is well worth seeing), please reply to this email. Could I ask that if you have a question about any other aspect of the conference, or the committee that you write a separate email.
Delegates may arrive on Thursday 1st September from around 3pm to register and the conference will end after lunch (1-2pm) on Saturday. As usual we will take orders for taxis on the Thursday and Friday.
We are very much looking forward to welcoming you to Chester at the beginning of September.
Dr Paul Middleton
Secretary, The British New Testament Society
