Nadia Bolz-Weber Turns Pentecost Sunday into a Farce…

And shows how much more important it is to be theatrical (in her mind anyway) than to be substantive.  Because nothing says Pentecost like confetti shot from confetti guns…

— (2 Tim. 3:1-7)

  1. Thanks for sending the Greek text. I had recently spoken on “Love,” using my memory of “The Four Loves” by C.S. Lewis as a foundation of my message. Actually, the speech was supposed to be watching a DVD and discussing it. But the technical grinches determined that Windows would update itself when I turned on my computer. After ten minutes, I determined to wing it.

Since I had seen many articles on the three types of love used in the New Testament, I did cover my trail by mentioning that only three of the four words are found in the New Testament. The three-loves people say only ἔρως, ἀγάπη, and φιλία occur in the New Testament. However, ἔρως doesn’t appear, so they are wrong on that count, even if it is a salacious topic for Christian speakers.

When I read the 2 Timothy 3 passage you quoted, I spied ἄστοργοι, the negative verb form of στοργή. Right there, in the New Testament! The compound, φιλοστοργοι, is used once (Romans 12:10), but the negative form occurs twice (Romans 1:31 and here). I think that is ample evidence for the three-loves people to get their facts straight. Since these negative στοργή’s do occur, there are yet only 3 loves in the New Testament, just not the ones the three-loves people think.
