TVZ Continues its Tradition of Producing Important Volumes

9783290178390I don’t know how they do it, but they do.  They keep building books I simply have to read.  I have to.  It’s a compulsion.

The Dictionary of Classical Hebrew Has Arrived

I’ve waited three years- since the folk at Logos first announced that DCH would become available for Logos users.  Three years.  I lost hope for 2 of them.  So, I’m absolutely thrilled it’s here and I don’t regret for a second the $250 I spent for it.  That’s about, by the way, the price of one of the hardback copies.  So the entire thing for the price of one is a steal (to me).

Christmas is here and I bought myself a present.  With some of the money I was given.

Hooray.

The Media Really Does Need to Shut Up About Christian Theology

The essayist of The Federalist nails it.  Absolutely spot on.  If you haven’t studied theology you have no business writing about it.

And staying at the Holiday Inn Express doesn’t give you any rights to do so.

Heikki Räisänen was a very fine, very interesting scholar.  May he rest in peace.

Heikki Räisänen: “Are Christians Better People?”

Biblical Studies Online

On March 23, 2011, Emeritus Professor Heikki Räisänen (10 December 1941 – 30 December 2015) presented the paper “Are Christians Better People? The Contrast Between ‘Us’ and ‘Them’ in Early Christian Rhetoric”. He examines in particular the Pauline and Pseudo-Pauline letters, noting the Pauline rhetoric which idealizes Christian morality and denigrates Greco-Roman morality.

Troels Engberg-Pedersen provides a response.

Not Everyone Should Have A Gun. Stop Saying They Should

North Las Vegas police said that no charges are expected to be filed against an off-duty officer and her husband, who is in the police academy, after they shot a female family member.  KTNV reported that the Las Vegas police officer and her husband were asleep on Christmas night when the family member came home unexpectedly at 11:30 pm.

No charges because they’re cops and doubtless white and everyone has a ‘right’ to shoot their mom… right?

The couple “accidentally” fired 27 rounds at the woman, according to KNTV. The relative reportedly suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. At least one bullet was said to have hit her leg.  A law enforcement official told KNTV that the victim was the mother of one of the shooters. She had access to the home because she lives with the couple.

Well there’s stupid.  And then there’s super stupid.  The shooters and the NLVPD qualify for the latter term.

Remembering Mack Brady

Mack is Christian Brady’s little boy.  Mack died three years ago today.  Every time Chris shares his love for his son, I literally tear up.  There aren’t a lot of people I admire in this world, but Christian is one of them.

Here’s why.

Zwingli on His Critics- That ‘Herd of Anti-Christs’

zwingli_marignano“As to that base herd of Anti-christs accusing me first of imprudence and then of impudence, you ought to hear that quietly, for now I begin not to be [the only] heretic though they meanwhile are boldly, not to say lyingly, asserting it. For I am not alone: at Zurich there are more than two thousand rational souls, who, now feeding on spiritual milk, will soon take solid food, while those others are miserably starving. As to their assertion that my doctrine (it is Christ’s not mine) is of the Devil, that is all right. For in this assertion I recognise the doctrine of Christ and myself as its true herald. So the Pharisees declared that Christ had a Devil, and that they were in the right.”

______________
Via.

1-2 Samuel in the Evangelical Exegetical Commentary

eecThe newest addition to the EEC has arrived today to great excitement (from me).   It’s a good series (with a conservative bent, base, and audience in mind).

The Evangelical Exegetical Commentary is a brand new, 44-volume commentary series which incorporates the latest critical biblical scholarship and is written from a distinctly evangelical perspective. Published by Lexham Press, the EEC is the next standard commentary on the entire Bible for evangelicals. Like the Word Biblical Commentary and the Baker Exegetical Commentary, the EEC is written by a team of leading biblical scholars. Contributors to the EEC include Eugene Merril, Edward Glenny, Michael Stallard, Stanley E. Porter, John Oswalt, William Barrick, Eugene Carpenter, Richard Averbeck, R. Dennis Cole, H. Wayne House, and many others. Learn more at the main Evangelical Exegetical Commentary page.

Logos has allowed me to review the previous volumes in the series (and subscribed me to the whole set) and accordingly I will review 1-2 Samuel in the next months.  Stay tuned.

The Anniversary of Emil Egli’s Death

Emil Egli was a brilliant historian and though his name is nearly forgotten in all but the dustiest corners of academia, he was a giant in the field of Reformation studies. Born on the 9th of December, 1848, he died on the 31st of December, 1908. Egli

egli2was a Swiss church historian. He studied theology, was ordained in 1870, and served in several villages of the canton of Zürich. In his student days he was deeply interested in historical studies. In 1873 appeared his important work, Die Schlacht bei Cappell 1531; in 1879, Die Züricher Wiedertäufer zur Reformationszeit, a brief product of his Aktensammlung zur Geschichte der Züricher Reformation in den Jahren 1519-1532, which he published (1879) with the support of Zürich and offers an uncommonly rich source on the early history of the Anabaptist movement. In 1887 followed a smaller volume, Die St. Galler Täufer.

And

egliEgli occupied himself principally with the Reformation in Switzerland. In 1879 he began his work at the university of Zürich as lecturer in church history, and in 1892 he was made a full professor. In addition to a series of shorter works he published Heinrich Bullingers Diarium des Jahres 1504-1574in the second volume of the Quellen zur schweizerischen Reformationsgeschichte, which he founded. After 1897 he published a semiannual periodical, Zwingliana, and after 1899 two volumes of Analecta Reformatorica (documents and treatises on the history of Zwingli and his times; also biographies of Bibliander, Ceporin, Johannes Bullinger). In 1902 he provided for a new edition of the Kessler’s Sabbata (a publication of the historical association of St. Gall). With G. Finsler (Basel) he began the publication of the new edition of Zwingli’s works.

Over a twenty year span at the University of Zurich he taught these courses:
