Sad News: I Howard Marshall Has Died

i howard marshallVia Roy Ciampa

This is sad news. I’m grateful for Howard Marshall’s life and legacy. What a humble and godly man, dedicated to Christ and the gospel.

“Emeritus Professor of New Testament Studies, University of Aberdeen, Rev Prof Howard Marshall was admitted to ARI during the week and was finally diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. His wife Maureen and all his family were gathered around his bed when he passed away peaceably in his sleep around 11am this morning. He has gone to be with his Lord whom he served so faithfully through many a long year. The family are grateful for all the love and support of the church family. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with them over these coming days.”

Thanks to Ray Van Neste and Jon Laansma for letting us know.

  2. Howard was an inspiration to a long stream of students, a careful and courteous scholar, a generous and gentle man who personified a discipleship of the intellect and the heart.
He broke a lifelong rule when he agreed to write a foreword to my study of James Denney, a New Testament theologian whose atonement theology he admired and upon which he built much of his own theology. His enthusiasm and encouragement of other people’s studies was one of his gifts to students and University. He exemplified the creative nexus of church, academy and personal faith, and was an ambassador at large for evangelical scholarship, held in great affection by colleagues across the theological spectrum, within his own Methodist communion and far beyond. “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
