Gosh, Al Mohler, Please, For the Love of God, Shut Up

Evidently Mohler had something to say about the Papal election yesterday:

A Southern Baptist seminary president urged evangelicals not to get too caught up in all the excitement surrounding the naming of a new pope.“Evangelical Christians simply cannot accept the legitimacy of the papacy and must resist and reject claims of papal authority,” Albert Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, said in a podcast commentary March 14. “To do otherwise would be to compromise biblical truth and reverse the Reformation.”

Al must not know this (and it’s amazingly sad that a Seminary President is so woefully ignorant), but

1- No Protestant or Evangelical that I know or have ever met accepts the ‘legitimacy’ of the papacy (in the sense of the Pope being their supreme leader). Al, you’re spitting into the wind and protesting something that doesn’t exist. Folk – even Protestants – watching the proceedings in Rome on the tv box is NOT papal adoration. Calm down, and chill out. And please, shut up.

3- The Reformation isn’t being reversed because, Al, you’re spitting into the wind and protesting something that doesn’t exist. Folk – even Protestants – watching the proceedings in Rome on the tv box is NOT papal adoration. Calm down, and chill out. And please, shut up.

Mohler is truly an embarrassment to Southern Baptists. Truly. I wish that he (and his kindred spirit Pat Robertson) would just retire and move to an island somewhere and spend their remaining days talking about themselves and wishing they could be in the public eye again. They love it so. They love the limelight and attention. That’s the only possible explanation for their unending dronings.

Al, you are no Reformer (though you fancy yourself one.  And I know Reformers and you’re the furthest thing from one to be sure).  And this isn’t the 16th century.  And the Pope isn’t the Antichrist.  Please, just stop.  Talking.

  1. Two things: First, AMEN!
Second: The “fullerist” view of Reformation that most baptists have does not count for being a “Reformed” so, AMEN again…
Let me add this one: I hope this does not strike you as an offense, but, you think too much like this pitiful, (at times pit-bull) servant of God that I strive to be…

I said something similar to this post yesterday to a few Reformed people who were engaging on the “you either call him an anitchrist our you’re falling for him” thus creating a false dichotomy crowd…

  2. Did you hear the bit where he says: “I’m only spouting this stuff because Jim West posted the other day that I ought to!” ? It’s really your fault for praying for him to make a statement 😦
