He’s an 8th Grader With Two Scholarship Offers at Major Universities. For Academics? Oh Please, This is America
Alabama just offered 8th grade stud Dylan Moses from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. If you think Alabama is early on the offer train, Les Miles offered Moses a scholarship last summer before his 8th grade season. Moses isn’t even in high school yet, but he’s racked up two of the most impressive offers in college football. Moses is 6-0, 205 pounds as a 14-year-old and has a 34” vertical with a 4.4 40. Moses’ father talked to AL.com about Alabama offering him a scholly so early, after Moses attended Bama’s junior day.
And there you have it. ‘8th grade stud…’ Wow. Good thing the context is sports or the writer might be called a pedophile. Indeed, were he a priest talking about a parishioner that he called a ‘stud’ he would already be in jail.
Oh America… Make sure your 8th graders excel at athletics. Keep them away from books, for ‘book-lernin’ won’t help them get into ‘skool’.
Honestly, I love my local ABC affiliate but ABC causes me to have really, really unpleasant thoughts. Really unpleasant. More than 12 minutes before this tweet, Aljazeera reported that a massive explosion and gunfire were heard in Syria. People are dying and the American press isn’t fiddling, it’s talking about the bloody Oscars and paper airplanes! Mein Gott!
Signs of the times my friends, signs of the times…
Police in Brockton, Mass., have asked state child welfare officials to investigate possible child abuse or neglect in the case of a 9-year-old who appears in sexually suggestive rap videos. Police said Monday they haven’t filed criminal charges or arrested the father of fourth grader Luie Rivera Jr., who goes by the stage name Lil Poopy. A Department of Children and Families spokeswoman confirms that officials are investigating whether the boy is being properly cared for.
How bad must those songs be? How inappropriate? Sigh. Just, sigh.
The videos show the boy slapping a woman’s buttocks, engaging in sexually suggestive dances and glorifying drug use and materialism.
In what bizarre universe is that kind of behavior appropriate? Why in dad’s, of course…
The boy’s father, Luis Rivera, told the newspaper his son is acting and not doing anything wrong.
Sigh. The world is upside down and inside out. Sigh. And even though Jeremiah Bailey won’t like it-
“As for you, do not pray for these people. Do not offer a cry or a prayer on their behalf, and do not beg Me, for I will not listen to you.” (Jer 7:16).
Cliff Kvidahl mentioned this– very sad, to me, news.
It appears that biblical studies has lost another of its most prominent scholars. Word is beginning to spread that Ralph Martin has passed away this morning in Southport England.
John has more, which do read. What a bummer bit of news to what’s already been a bummer day. May the good Prof rest in peace eternal.
One of the rallying cries shared by all of the Magisterial Reformers was that the Church end the practice of priestly celibacy and be allowed to marry. In 1522 Zwingli wrote an entire book on the subject-
Ein früntlich bitt und ermanung etlicher priesteren der Eidgnoschafft, das man das heylig euangelium predigen nit abschlahe, noch unwillen darab empfach, ob die predgenden ergernus zu vermiden sich eelich vermächlind.
After carefully mustering scriptural support (in 11 points), he concludes
The conclusion is that marriage is an excellent and honourable thing, which is also not forbidden the clergy in the Old Testament, which is much stricter than the New. But though the wise bishops, who wanted to be wiser than even God, who could probably have forbidden it, had He thought it useful and honourable, have brought about so praiseworthy a state of chastity, still we will let them answer for it to God, and it will doubtlessly go hard with them. For Christ says [Matthew 15:9]: “For in vain do they worship me, since they teach the doctrines and commands of men.”
The church of Rome would do well to read the book. It may be able, if implementing its wisdom, to extricate itself from many of its problems.
Cardinal Keith O’Brien, the top Catholic official in Britain, is stepping down a day after publication of reports of “inapproapriate” behaviour in his relations with priests working for him. O’Brien, an outspoken critic of gay rights, is alleged to have made unwelcome advances against priests reporting to him, the BBC reported.
The Vatican announced on Monday that Pope Benedict XVI had accepted Cardinal O’Brien’s resignation. “The Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI has accepted on the 18 February 2013 the resignation of His Eminence Cardinal Keith Patrick O’Brien from the pastoral governance of the Archdiocese of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh,” a statement said.
Celibacy- it’s the root of the Church’s problems. That and a seemingly high density of pedophiles amongst its clerics.
