The Zurich City Council responded to the orders of the Bishop of Constance to halt Reforming actions through the pen of Zwingli on 18 August, 1524 in a book titled Christenlich antwurt burgermeisters und radtes zuo Zürich, dem hochwirdigen etc. herren Hugen, byschoffe zuo Costantz, über die underricht beyder articklen: der bilder und mesß, inen zuogeschickt. Also in götlicher warheit gründt, das mencklich ersehen mag, was davon under christenem volck billich sölle gehalten werden.
Essentially, the answer to the Bishop was No! The City was happy, though, to have a debate and the Catholic camp was invited to attend. All matters, however, would be decided on the basis of Scripture and not patristic or Roman tradition.
