Oh My, That’s One Crazy Mormon

Wow.  What a weirdo.  I hope he enjoys the rest of his bizarre freakish life in prison.

Prosecutors in northern Utah filed charges Tuesday against Efrey Guzman, a Latter-Day Saints church leader accused of biting a man’s penis after assaulting his mother and sister.

Guzman, 46, of Sandy, was charged in open court with “aggravated sexual assault, aggravated burglary, both first-degree felonies, and sexual abuse of a child and forcible sexual abuse, both second-degree felonies,” Bob Scott, a spokesman for the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office, told The Huffington Post.

According to the arrest affidavit, Guzman went to the home of a 13-year-old girl on May 8. During his visit with the girl, who later described him to police as a “family friend,” he assaulted her by attempting to kiss her and grab her buttocks. When the girl’s 20-year-old brother entered the room he left, police said. The authorities were not immediately notified of the alleged assault.

On Aug. 2, Guzman returned to the teenager’s home. When the girl’s mom asked him to leave, he refused, police said.

“The defendant pushed his way into the residence and began to assault the mother,” the arrest affidavit reads. “She yelled for help and tried to fight the defendant off. She said the defendant ripped her shirt exposing her breast.”

Guzman was allegedly groping the woman when her son came into the room and witnessed what was occurring. It was when the young man attempted to intervene, police say, Guzman viciously assaulted him.

“While he tried to get the defendant off his mother, the defendant grabbed his penis through his boxer shorts and bit his penis causing severe damage that required surgery,” the arrest affidavit reads.

Who does that?  Does he think he’s Mike Tyson?

Thomas Nelson Isn’t To Be Applauded For Pulling the Plug on Barton…

It should be ashamed that it ever considered publishing anything by one of modern America’s most deceptive misleading pseudo-historians.  Others may think Nelson has shown moral courage in changing its mind.  I don’t   I think if they had really had moral courage they would have told him from the start that they weren’t interested in his badly researched rubbish.  Instead, they changed course only when public outcry became too loud to ignore.  That isn’t courage, it’s cowardice.

David Barton, president of the WallBuilders organization and a frequent guest on Glenn Beck’s broadcasts, is one of America’s most popular Christian history writers. Liberal critics have long accused Barton of misinterpretations and errors, and readers of the History News Network recently voted a new Barton book, The Jefferson Lies, as the “Least Credible History Book in Print.” But now some conservative Christian scholars are publicly questioning Barton’s work, too.

The guy doesn’t know jack about American history.  He’s an ignorant fraud.  A pseudo-scholar who simply intentionally or ignorantly distorted the facts and distorts the facts to make them fit his convoluted insane ideology.   Christian scholars who have supported him have supported a lie.  And those who have been silent should be ashamed of themselves, cowed to cowardice for fear of what?   And  Thomas Nelson… how sad that it even ever thought it a good idea to put Barton’s nonsense into print.

With thanks to Joel Watts for pointing the story out (as I’m as disinclined to watch the news for Barton as I am to scan the news for Beck).

More Vile Pastoral Misconduct

Cancer and HIV patients have been told to buy bottles of ordinary blackcurrent squash and olive oil for £14 by a church claiming the blessed goods are a ‘miracle cure’ for their illnesses.  The Victorious Pentecostal Assembly (VPA) sells the over-inflated goods with the claim that once blessed by a pastor they can cure a host of serious health conditions.  Undercover reporters found members of the VPA congregation in Manchester were told that if a terminally-ill person drank a mixture of the specially blessed litre of squash and 500ml bottle of olive oil, which were being sold at double their real value, their ailments would disappear.  A church leader who identified himself as Pastor Mbenga also claimed to have previously cured diabetes and a brain tumour using the concoction.   He said the mixture would ‘do what no man can do’ through divine intervention and guaranteed the cancer would be cured.

Could anything be more reprehensible than this kind of deceptive pentebabbleism?  Such people truly are the tools of satan.  (HT M.A. on FB).

The Truth About Chris Tilling’s Book

I couldn’t have said it better-

‘It is a remarkable fact that divine Christology is not an “end product” of a development lasting some decades but that high Christology is present and fully developed already in the earliest testimonies of Christianity, in the (undisputed) letters of Paul. Dr. Tilling has presented an investigation on divine Christology of the highest standard both concerning the exegesis of Paul (esp. 1Cor 8-10) and the awareness of the theological implications. The thesis “that Paul’s Christ-relation is a divine-Christology expressed as relationship” is well founded and marks a progress in our understanding of Paul’s Christology and theology. It leads out from a dead end in discussions whether Paul’s Christology is divine or not. This book is an outstanding testimony of critical scholarship by a mature exegete and theologian’ — Prof. Dr. Hermann Lichtenberger (Professor for New Testament and Antique Judaism at the University of Tübingen and Head of the Institute for Antique Judaism and Hellenistic History of Religions).

I really agree. I love Chris’s book but don’t tell him. The hairy backed balding middle aged lunatic would get a big head and I would have to use my spiritual gift of ‘imposing humility’ on him. Not that I would mind, but I like to save my powers for more serious affronts to Divine Dignity.

Swiss Football!

Because I love football, especially Swiss football. But then again, to me, anything, and everything, is way more interesting than coptic gnostic texts.

Blog Readers and their Horrible Tattoos

Yesterday I posted the photos of bloggers and their tats, and today, in response to a landslide of email requesting I do the same for blog readers, I offer the following pictorial evidence of the strangeness of some visitors here:

Cindy Jacobs is a Reprehensible Deceiver and Wretched Heretic

If you happen upon her, flee.  She’s both deceiver and heretic. She has never raised from the dead so much as a tick, much less a person. (Thanks to Bob Cargill for the mention of the video).

The Heidelberg Catechism, Question 2

Question 1 of the catechism sets the stage asking ‘what is your only comfort in life and death?’ The answer, Christ. Question 2 then asks

How many things are necessary for thee to know, that thou, enjoying this comfort, mayest live and die happily?

Answer: Three; (a) the first, how great my sins and miseries are; (b) the second, how I may be delivered from all my sins and miseries; (c) the third, how I shall express my gratitude to God for such deliverance. (d)

Then follows the Scriptural proof.

(a) Matt.11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matt.11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Matt.11:30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Luke 24:46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: Luke 24:47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Luke 24:48 And ye are witnesses of these things. 1 Cor.6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. Tit.3:3 For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. Tit.3:4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Tit.3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Tit.3:6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; Tit.3:7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. (b) John 9:41 Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth. John 15:22 If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloke for their sin. (c) John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Acts 10:43 To him (Jesus) give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. (d) Eph.5:8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: Eph.5:9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) Eph.5:10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. Eph.5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. 1 Pet.2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: 1 Pet.2:10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. Rom.6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? Rom.6:2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Rom.6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Rom.6:13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

A person only knows true comfort when they come to terms with their real condition; when that condition is faced head on and dealt with; and gratitude is expressed to the one who resolves the problem. Mankind’s read problem is sin.  Christ redeems us from it.  God is worthy, therefore, of our gratitude.  When we realize, and act on, those three simple truths then we can have peace of mind and heart in life, and in death.

The Heidelberg Catechism is a profoundly important theological primer with which every Christian ought to be familiar.

The Talmud: It’s a Treasure Trove of Real Wisdom

English: A complete set of the Babylonian

You might find it odd for a non-Jew to laud the Talmud but it’s filled with wisdom and wit and some of the best ‘sermon illustrations’ you can imagine.  Naturally, then, given my admiration for the hulking collection, I keep an eye out for the Talmud in the news.  Which brings me to this.

Which book should be at the core of Jewish education? Most educators would probably point to the Bible without thinking twice, but Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz happens to disagree. While not doubting the importance of Bible study, he would prefer that the Talmud, or Gemara, stand at the center of the Israeli school system.

“It’s a central pillar for understanding anything about Judaism, more than the Bible,” says Steinsaltz, one of the world’s best known Talmudical scholars. “The Talmud is not a divine gift given to people. The Jewish people created it. But on the other hand, it created the Jewish people. In so many ways, we’re Talmudic Jews, whether we believe in it or not.”

I might be so bold as to say that the Talmud should be studied by non-Jews as well.  Again, it’s a treasure trove.  Steinsaltz agrees-

But Talmud study would be helpful even outside the yeshiva world, Steinsaltz believes. Replacing the Bible as the key book taught in Israel’s schools could help the Jewish state become a more balanced and stable society, he asserts. “The Talmud as a book has the enormous quality that the world needs now more than anything else: sanity,” he told The Times of Israel recently in his study, situated in a serene street of Jerusalem’s Nahlaot quarter.
