Who’s Going to Win Euro 2012?

Italy.  By a score of 4-1.  You heard it here first… just remember that.

Just a Few More Hours….

For a chance to win the (so far) very useful Evangelical Exegetical Commentary.  The contest ends tonight.

The Evangelical Exegetical Commentary is a brand new, 44-volume commentary series which incorporates the latest critical biblical scholarship and is written from a distinctly evangelical perspective. Published by Logos Bible Software, the EEC is the next standard commentary on the entire Bible for evangelicals. Like the Word Biblical Commentary and the Baker Exegetical Commentary, the EEC is written by a team of leading biblical scholars. Contributors to the EEC include Eugene Merril, Edward Glenny, Michael Stallard, Stanley E. Porter, John Oswalt, William Barrick, Eugene Carpenter, Richard Averbeck, R. Dennis Cole, H. Wayne House, and many others. Learn more at the main Evangelical Exegetical Commentary page.

Is it God’s Fault if We Sin?

According to Ursinus’ exposition of the Heidelberg Catechism, the answer is a resounding no.

[T]hat the wicked are punished by the wicked, and the good chastised and exercised, is the just and holy work of the divine will; but that the wicked execute the judgment of God by sinning, is not the fault of God, but comes to pass by the corruption of the wicked, which they have brought upon themselves, God neither willing, nor approving, nor accomplishing, nor furthering their sins, but only permitting them in his just judgment, when accomplishing his work and purpose through them, he either does not reveal his will to them, or does not influence their wills to regard his revealed will as the end and rule of their actions.

This distinction between the works of God, and those of the devil, and of God’s accomplishing his just work through the devil, and of his permitting the sin of the devil, is evidently confirmed by the history of Job, whom God designed to try, whilst the devil attempted to destroy him.

The same thing is also proven by the history of Ahab, and by the prophecy respecting antichrist, where the devil deceives men that he may destroy them, whilst God permits them to be deceived that he may in this way punish them, and suffers the devil to execute his will and purpose. — The Commentary of Dr. Zacharias Ursinus on the Heidelberg Catechism.

So take that, God blamers.

On the Preaching Office

30 June 1525 Zwingli published his singularly relevant tome titled ‘On the Preaching Office‘.

It was a thorouhgoing denunciation of the ‘preachers’ who had appeared in the wake of the Reformation asserting their rights to say what they wished in spite of the fact that they neither possessed the Spirit nor understood the Scriptures. It opens

They may have called themselves apostles, but they were really the enemies of God’s Word.  Self appointed proclaimers… dilettantes in the truest sense of the word… there’s virtually nothing worse.

Martin Luther: On Joel Watts

“I believe Joel Watts the pope is the masked and incarnate devil because he is the Antichrist. As Christ is God incarnate, so the Antichrist is the devil incarnate. The words are really spoken of Joel Watts the pope when it’s said that he’s a mixed god, an earthly god, that is, a god of the earth. Here god is understood as god of this world. Why does he call himself an earthly god, as if the one, almighty God weren’t also on the earth? — Martin Luther

Congrats to Charlotte Hempel!

According to Eibert Tigchelaar-

Congratulations to Charlotte Hempel for becoming the new executive editor of Dead Sea Discoveries per July 1, 2012 !  www.brill.nl/dsd

Well deserved indeed and well done Charlotte!

Joel Watts: Is He The Antichrist?

In a word, yes.  It seems that my internet issues have opened the door for Joel’s egregious wickedness to take root and break forth in a volley of seeds spread on his blog and on the Facebook.

Well, wicked Joel, guess what- the issues here have been resolved- and I’m back… so guess who’s in serious trouble.  That’s right, you!

Get thee behind me, Satan!  Your vile rule (even though momentary), is OVER!   (Muahahahahahaha).

The Mysterious Web

I’ve chatted with my neighbor who works repairing phone lines and he tells me that there’s an issue with some piece of equipment north of us and only some of us.

The web is weird and its ways mysterious. Thank heaven for iPhones…. ( you can file that under things I never thought I’d say).

Still Down…

But I’m one of the few.  All my neighbors have working access.  A few of us are, however, apparently on the same cursed this or that.  It’s extraordinarily annoying I assure you.  So I’ve come across to the neighbor and am using their wi-fi.

God is testing me….

The Writings of Erhard Gerstenberger

Are, according to the good Professor, available online!  He writes

Published electronically and free at online access is a large collection of my essays in German and English written over more than 50 years.  The publisher is the University of Giessen, Germany. Editors are my colleagues Ute E. Eisen and Christl M. Maier. The title of this 700 page opus is:

Erhard S. Gerstenberger: Die Hebraeische Bibel als Buch der Befreiung. Ausgewaehlte Aufsaetze, 2012. Here is the URL access: http://geb.uni-giessen.de/geb/volltexte/2012/8601/

geb stands for “Giessener Elektronische Bibliothek”. You can get to the book also by way of www.uni-giessen.de navigating through the university site.

Fantastic! Gerstenberger is one of my favorite Hebrew Bible scholars. I’ve learned a great deal from him and you will as well. And, for free. This is incredible.

TVZ is on the Facebook

Check them out– they’re a brilliantly fantastic publisher of some of the most useful Reformation period and Biblical studies volumes in all of Europe.

When in Zurich I just dropped by their offices out of the blue and their Director gave me a tour, and a book!  How awesome is that?  I love their work.

Nestle-Aland, Novum Testamentum 28th Edition

With thanks to Bobby K. of Hendrickson for telling me of the impending appearance of the latest incarnation of Nestle-Aland, the 28th edition!  Fantastic!  Even more fantastic, Eisenbrauns is carrying it!

This is the twenty-eighth edition of the Nestle-Aland Novum Testamentum Graece (NA28). NA28 is the standard scholarly edition of the Greek New Testament used by scholars, Bible translators, professors, students, and pastors worldwide. Now NA28 has been revised and improved:

• Critical apparatus revised and easier to use
• Papyrii 117-127 included for the first time
• In-depth revision of the Catholic Epistles, with more than 30 changes to the upper text
• Scripture references systematically reviewed for accuracy

I am, I have to confess, really excited. I mean REALLY excited.

Just as Mexico is the Somalia of the South, Chicago is the Somalia of the North

If you happen to visit Chicago, wear a vest.  You’re as likely to be shot as not, it seems.  And you don’t want what happened to this 7 year old girl to happen to you.

The latest victim of Chicago’s surge in gang violence is just seven years old. Heaven Sutton died after being shot in the back at a candy stand her mom set up two weeks ago to help keep neighborhood kids close to home and away from gang crossfire, reports the Chicago Tribune. “She looked forward every day to opening up the candy store, and for somebody just to come take her life, it’s not right,” says her mother. Heaven, she says, had just had her hair done ahead of a family trip to Disney World to reward her for good grades.

So tragic.  Poor child.  Poor family.  Poor Chicago… the Somalia of the north.

Quote of the Day

Men dismiss the Bible because they say it contradicts itself. Their real beef is that it contradicts “them.” – Douglas Wilson

How’d you spend your morning…  Because sooner or later, you’re going to end up in such a place and someone will be trying to comfort your family too. Or in the words of Ps 39:4- “O LORD, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am!”

Zwingli’s House to be Totally Refurbished

Ref.ch informs us that

Juli.

Brilliant. It’s a fantastic place.  Here’s some photos I snapped while I was there last time-

How Should Christians Relate to Material Goods, and Money?

In his delightful and informative ‘The Christian Education of Youth‘, Zwingli remarks

Those who put on strange or new clothing every day thereby show how fickle, or at least how effeminate and childish they are. Such persons do not belong to Christ. While they thus clothe themselves in rare attire, they let the poor suffer from cold and hunger. For this reason a Christian should beware of foolishness and extravagance in dress, as well as of any other evil.

And

Why need I forbid a Christian youth to love money and worldly honor, since these evils are also condemned among the heathen? No one who will serve covetousness will become a Christian, for this vice has not only ruined individual characters, but also well fortified cities and powerful kingdoms. Covetousness will overthrow any government that comes under its sway. When this vice has taken possession of the mind, no good influence can affect it. Covetousness is a deadly poison and yet, sad to say, it has spread and has become very powerful among us. Only through Christ can we destroy this vice within ourselves, and we can do it if we very diligently and unceasingly follow Him; for what did He oppose more than this root of all evil?

If only Christians today were educated theologically. Alas…
