On Forgiveness: An Observation

Forgiveness without repentance is permission.

Police are Investigating Death Threats Against Shlomo Sand

Ha’aretz reports

Prof. Shlomo Sand, a Tel Aviv University history professor, said Sunday that he had received an envelope containing white powder and a letter that included death threats.

The remainder is behind a registration wall (though it’s free).

It includes:

The history professor said it was possible that his new book, ” The Invention of the Land of Israel: From Holy Land to Homeland,” might have been what caused someone to send him the letter. “Four years ago, when I published my previous book, ‘The Invention of the Jewish People,’ there were fewer crazy people than there are today,” Sand told Haaretz.  Throughout the day, the police examined the substance and discovered it was not of a chemical nature. The police also opened an investigation into the case.

The lengths some people will go to support their ideology, even threatening death.  That’s depraved.

Who Owns Congress?

Two words: not voters.  A very nice essay in Mother Jones asks

What if members of Congress were seated not by party but according to the industries which gave them the most money over their entire careers?

And then shows how the seats are arranged according to their purchasers. So the next time you vote, just realize that no matter who wins, you, the voter, lose and big donors are the real winners no matter who is in office.

With thanks to Joel Watts for pointing it out on the twitter.
