Answering Your Letters

Jim,

I don’t appreciate your negative comments about atheists.  I am an atheist and I’m offended by you.  I’m also an agnostic.  Please stop talking about us.

Paul

Thanks for writing Paul, you’re the first atheist agnostic I’ve come across.  As to the substance of your note, rest assured that I am utterly disinclined to alter my behavior simply because an ‘atheist agnostic’ thinks I should.  But thanks for visiting!

Poor guy. I’m not sure if he is an agnostic atheist or an atheist agnostic….but he can’t be both.

Nope! I love explaining to atheists how they cannot hold an atheistic position with any integrity…the body language and facial expressions are truly a sight to behold when they realise they are agnostics and need to consider that there just might be a God.

  3. That’s actually the second time today I’ve seen an individual who views himself or herself as an agnostic and an atheist. I’m not going to go as far as arguing that all atheists are truly agnostics, but the idea of an agnostic atheist is contradictory.

Interestingly enough, in the Wikipedia article on agnosticism, it adds a blurb about agnostic atheism where it states:
“Agnostic atheists are atheistic because they do not have belief in the existence of any deity, and agnostic because they do not claim to know that a deity does not exist.”

So they claim that they don’t believe in God and that they don’t claim that God isn’t?

    As I said: contradictory.

Don’t worry, about it, Jim. We aren’t going to alter our opinion of you and your ilk, either.
