The Dutch Are Strange: The Aylum Seeker Game

It would seem one of the more tasteless television shows yet devised. In fact Weg van Nederland is said to have had a deliberately liberal agenda, despite its rather provocative style.  Broadcast last night on Dutch television, the game show, translating as Far from the Netherlands, involved five contestants who were set for deportation.

That’s just plain weird.

The winner of the quiz was due to get EUR 4,000 to make a fresh start outside the Netherlands. The unsuccessful asylum seekers competed in a quiz about Dutch culture, history and language, and one consolation prize was a bulletproof vest.  The glib tone was magnified by the presence of a male host flanked by a pair of female assistants clad in a mini-skirted pastiche of cabin crew uniforms.

Yup.  Weird.  No wonder the crazed Anabaptists found a welcome there.  It’s a land of loons.  (No offense to the several loony Hollanders I know…)    😉

What’s weirder is deporting people who have children who were born in The Netherlands, and other long-term ‘residents’. The story says the one-off program was making a social point.

I would hope that those who read this post will take the trouble to read the actual full article. Then it becomes clear that it is much more serious than the light tongue-in-cheek tone of said post. It addresses a real social injustice and seeming random decisions by the Dutch authorities.
