The Really Ridiculous Children’s 9/11 Coloring Book

Judge for yourself the propriety of having a coloring book with images like this aimed to help ‘parents talk with their children’ about the events surrounding 9/11.

Honestly, you have to be a bit sick to think that the death of someone is a proper subject for little kids to color.  I can’t blame America’s Muslims for being more than a little offended.  I’m offended – probably for some of the same reasons and probably for other reasons.

We Shall Never Forget 9/11: The Kids’ Book of Freedom has just been released by the Missouri-based publisher Really Big Coloring Books, which says it is “designed to be a tool that parents can use to help teach children about the facts surrounding 9/11”. Showing scenes from 9/11 for children to colour in and telling the story of the attacks and the subsequent hunt for Osama bin Laden, “the book was created with honesty, integrity, reverence, respect and does not shy away from the truth”, according to its publisher, which says that it has sold out of its first print run of 10,000 copies.

I’m sure it has sold out.  In America, even the most horrific events can be turned into profit.

    Ummmm …

There’s a bullet in flight in that panel. This is disgusting.

It looks like they traced the infamous photo of Elian Gonzalez.

Bin Laden killed. Bin Laden was killed. This is a truth children need to know. Drawings are the best way for children to learn this – the same as they learn about the plagues of Egypt and the slaying of Goliath in Christian colouring books

Ummm … there are things that I don’t teach my kids until they’re older.

The exact nature of who and what Usama bin Laden was is one of those things. One of the clues I’ll be using to know when my kids are old enough to talk about things like this? When they can understand difficult subjects without needing coloring books to explain them.
