I Guess They Teach What Students Can Use in the Real World at Vocational Schools…

Methamphetamine pills

A product of West Virginia Vocational Schools

A West Virginia public vocational school has been shut down indefinitely after traces of methamphetamine were found throughout the building during an investigation of the principal and a teacher. State Police Sgt. Andy Perdue said Monday that traces of the drug were found in the ducts, principal’s office, hallways and bathrooms of the Boone County Career and Technical Center. Perdue says the teacher admitted he smoked meth with the principal in the principal’s office.

Amusingly…

He says police do not have evidence the school was used as a meth lab.

Oh sure- there are traces of meth everywhere but it wasn’t a meth lab. And Elvis hated peanut butter and banana sandwiches too…

Teacher Jack Turley faces charges of manufacturing meth and procuring Sudafed for making meth. Principal Keith Phipps faces charges of purchasing over the legal limit of Sudafed.

Their school motto can be ‘we train our kids for jobs they can really use since no real jobs are available in so much of Appalachia…’

China Continues its War on Christianity

A key leader of the Chinese House Church Alliance has been sentenced to two years in a labor camp as part of a crackdown on illegal worship, ChinaAid reported July 25.  Pastor Shi Enhao, deputy chairman of CHCA, was sentenced to “re-education through labor” — an extrajudicial punishment that requires no conviction or trial — because of his position in an influential umbrella group of Chinese house churches.

China, let him go or I swear I’m going to stop buying your exports.

[That’s the reason the US Government has said nothing to China about its deplorable and disgusting treatment of Christians: it (the US government) is too concerned with trade and future loans from China to raise a stink about something that really matters- or at least something which Washington says really matters].

John Boehner is Beholding to a Drug Addict

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) outlined the GOP’s debt-ceiling plan to conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh on Monday before showing it to his conference. On Monday during his radio program, Limbaugh talked about the call he received from Boehner. Limbaugh’s support of the plan would be advantageous to Republicans because it might help rally the conservative base.

That sheds an interesting light on the Speaker of the House: he’s a toady of Limbaugh, a drug addict. If Obama or Reid were calling up Brad Pitt can you imagine the whining by the teabaggers?  I can just see Boehner kowtowing to Limbaugh.  ‘Yes master, I will obey master.  Certainly I will seek my master’s permission before I act and I will toe the line lest I enrage my master and he become displeased with me…’

Politicians: they’re all just such dirtbags serving their own interests and special interests rather than the interests of the people who elected them and have to endure their idiotic policies.

Hear the ‘Jerusalem Gold Bell’ for Yourself

Joseph Lauer writes

It’s what you’ve been waiting for! Following is a portion of IMRA’s e-mail and Internet posting directing one to a 16-second YouTube audio of the sound of the tiny gold bell found in Jerusalem. IMRA’s posting is at http://www.imra.org.il/story.php3?id=53224 and the audio is also [on the YouTube clip below].

As noted earlier today, the AP article about the find states that “When Eli Shukron of the Israel Antiquities Authority shook it Sunday, the faint metallic sound was something between a clink and a rattle.”

Herman Selderhuis: Psalms 1-72, 73-150 in the Reformation Commentary on Scripture

A few months back I mentioned a new series being published by IVP Academic titled the ‘Reformation Commentary on Scripture‘.  Subscribers can still get volumes at a 40% discount as they appear.

The list of contributors is spectacular but none more so than Herman Selderhuis, who will be responsible, I learned today (via Facebook) for the material on the Psalms.

Selderhuis is to Reformation studies what Diarmaid MacCulloch is to general Church history: the brightest light in the discipline’s  firmament.  Indeed, when one has works by MacCulloch, Selderhuis, and Peter Opitz, one has the very best of the very best.

Selderhuis has published widely in 16th century studies with a special focus on John Calvin.  His editorial oversight of ‘The Calvin Handbook’ is paradigmatic for such volumes.

I was very much looking forward to the RCS series before today but now I am especially eager to see it.

An Altar at Gath

Via Joseph Lauer-

The nicely illustrated posting, entitled “The news is out! A large stone altar in Area D”, discusses the discovery of “a beautiful horned stone altar! The altar, made of one block of stone (50X50X100 cm) has two horns (not 4!) and a very nicely carved cornice on three sides. It is placed within a large structure which might be a temple (but it is too early to be sure).” The posting is at http://gath.wordpress.com/2011/07/25/the-news-is-out-a-large-stone-altar-in-area-d/

In addition, at http://www.foundationstone.org/ David Willner writes about the discovery and posts some additional pictures of the altar and informs that he and Barnea Levi Selavan will broadcast on their LandMinds show on Wednesday, July 27, an interview with Dr. Maeir. (“Tune in to the LandMinds show on Wednesday July 27th to hear Prof. Maier discuss this important find. Or you can download the podcast right here on the Foundation Stone website after the show airs.”) (“(July 27, 2011) It’s Road Trip season as we head out to some fantastic archaeological digs! On this weeks show, we’ll have a shmooze, some more interviews from Tel Acco (Tel Acco Road Trip Part III), and an exclusive interview with Prof. Aren Maier and his new find – an altar from the 9th century BCE at Tel es Safi (Gat of the Philistines).”) See http://www.israelnationalnews.com/Radio/Author.aspx/3408

David Willner also writes, “Finally, if you really need more on this emerging story, I’m posting a short interview with Amit Dagan (the area supervisor of the find) here– it’s in Hebrew.” David Willner and Barnea Levi Selavan are co-hosts of the LandMinds show on Israel National News, airing Wednesdays from 5-7 pm Israel time [10 am – 12 noon Eastern USA time]. You can contact them at info@foundationstone.org

There are a few more photos of the discovery on Aren’s blog.  Fascinating!

Glenn Beck Proves Himself Despicable, Again

I believe Glenn Beck is either mentally unstable or simply evil.  Or perhaps a mixture of both.  Otherwise, he couldn’t, he wouldn’t say what he has in fact said.

On his radio show today Glenn Beck compared a Labour Party youth camp where a gunman killed scores of young people to the Hitler Youth, but failed to mention that his own 9/12 Project ran a similar summer camp this year.  Here is the audio from Media Matters.

He’s truly, truly a sick and evil man.  An honest to goodness reprobate and a sorry and sad excuse for a human being.  I’m going to find out who sponsors this imbecile’s radio show and make sure I never spend another penny with them again.

Boy if that isn’t The Ideological Pot Calling the Archaeological Kettle Black!

PA Uses Archaeology ‘To Rewrite History of Palestine’. PA says archaeology dig in Shechem, which the Bible says was bought by Jacob, will help “writing or rewriting the history of Palestine.”

What’s wrong, doesn’t Israel National News know that Mazar has been doing exactly that in the putative ‘City of David’ (where she just keeps on finding things which justify Israeli national claims to the area)? Boy oh boy INN, talk about the pot calling the kettle black. If the Palestinians are using archaeology to make ideological claims they’ve only just learned how to do it from Zionists.

It’s Sometimes Best to Ignore your M.D.

They can be profoundly wrong and give really awful advice.  And, believe it or not, they aren’t God (even though they like to play one on tv).

A mother who was told by doctors to consider aborting her baby has spoken of her joy after he was allowed to leave hospital despite being born four months early. Jacob McMahon became Britain’s most premature surviving twin after he was born on February 22, just 23 weeks into pregnancy, at a weight of 1lb 4oz. Five months later he has now been deemed healthy enough to leave hospital with his mother Sara Fisher, 25, and father Scott McMahon, 26. Doctors had advised Miss Fisher to abort Jacob after his twin sister, Emie, died when she was born at 21 weeks and six days due to an infection. But Jacob followed eight days later, twelve hours before doctors would have demanded a final decision from the family on whether to terminate the pregnancy.

Doctors are sometimes right of course. But sometimes they are just wrong.

On the Norway Terrorist: The View from the Muslim Perspective

Introducing ‘Christian terrorist,’ Norway mass murderer.

The headline of the Al Arabiya story pretty much says it all. It commences

Should Anders Behring Breivik, the killer of nearly 100 people in Norway, be described as a Christian terrorist? It is commonplace in the media and elsewhere to refer to members of Al Qaeda and similar groups as Islamic terrorists. Is there any essential difference between a person who describes himself as Christian and carries out mass murder in the name of Christianity, and a Muslim who does the same in the name of his religion?

Good questions all. And then

Many Christians would consider the term “Christian terrorist” an oxymoron. Christianity proclaims itself to be a religion of love.

Absolutely true.

Likewise, many Muslims consider theirs to be a religion of peace and disavow Al Qaeda and its affiliates.

A fact, it has to be admitted, which is frequently overlooked in the Western media and especially amongst right wing persons and anti-Muslim crusaders like the Norway murderer and many in the Tea Party.

Yet acts of terrorism have been carried out over centuries by people claiming to act in the name of religion. The medieval Christian Crusaders, with whom Mr. Breivik identified in his 1,500-page manifesto, are one example.

Indeed. And there’s much more for readers in the West to ponder in this piece which I commend to you. It’s time for us all to come to the place where we denounce violence in ALL its forms (including the violence of war).

The Common English Bible in the News

Time Magazine has a write up on the new version. It concludes

While the vocabulary may deviate slightly, the meaning coming from the Son of Man or the Human One remains the same. Ultimately, it’s all still the Bible.

It is indeed, ‘still the Bible’ – and a very good version of it at that and the best since the Revised English Bible (the very best in English ever yet produced).

Go take a look at the short Time essay.  Especially if you’re looking for a good translation and you want to know a little more about the C.E.B.

Now Here’s a Proper Prayer

Thank you, JS Bach, for restoring my faith in humanity (after that last ‘prayer’ by the village Nascar-ian which made me want to disavow the entire species).

Quote of the Day

Most brides are more interested in a wedding than a marriage.  — Jason

[One would have to add as well that most grooms are more interested in sex than a marriage].

Are there Moderate Muslims? It seems So, According to one Scholar

Soon after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, President George Bush argued that terrorists were perverting the Muslim religion. The president said, “Islam is peace.” But that viewpoint is often drowned out today. Extremists claim that they represent Islam. And many Americans have come to question the entire faith, seeing it as violent or oppressive.  Turkish journalist Mustafa Akyol makes a case for putting Islam in a different light in his new book, Islam without Extremes. In it, he traces moderation, even liberalism, throughout the history of Islam. And he tells Morning Edition co-host Steve Inskeep that he believes the religion should not be defined by violent extremists.

Give the entire piece a look.  If he’s right, and he probably is (he knows more about the subject than I do so I happily defer), where are all the moderates?  Why is his the (apparently) lone voice?

Good Riddance, Adulterer

It couldn’t happen to a more deserving self absorbed self serving jock.

Tiger Woods is out of the world’s top 20 for the first time since January 1997. The American, who held the number one spot for more than 11 years in 10 different spells, has not been able to play since May 12 because of knee and Achilles tendon injuries. Woods has dropped from eighth to 21st in the rankings in that time although he’s expected to announce later this week that he is returning to action at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational early next month.

Where in the World is Chris Tilling Now?

He’s been down to South Africa! And ‘died’!!!!

A 50-year-old South African man thought to be dead woke up in a chilly morgue on Sunday and shouted to be let out, scaring off two attendants who thought he was a ghost, local media reported.  “His family thought he had died,” health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo told the Sapa news agency.

“The family called a private undertaker who took what they thought was a dead body to the morgue, but the man woke up inside the morgue on Sunday at 5:00 pm and screamed, demanding to be taken out of the cold place.” This caused two mortuary attendants on duty to flee the building in the small town of Libode in the rural Eastern Cape as they thought it was a ghost.

That’s a mean trick to play on people Chris!  You could have given them a heart attack.  You wicked thing…

Hoodlum Vandals

Satanic symbols and profanities against Jesus have been spray painted on the walls of a century-old small town church. Church members who spoke with 6 News Sunday are still pretty shaken up.

Jones Chapel United Methodist Church was vandalized late Thursday night or early Friday morning, according to investigators. They were able to make an arrest shortly after the crime was reported.

Two 16-year-old boys who live close to the church have been charged with burglary and vandalism. Church members believe the boys broke into the church through a window that leads into the basement. The basement houses classrooms where Sunday school classes are taught.

What gets into the minds of kids?  Who did they think they would impress besides themselves and the equally silly and senseless angry atheists who will see it as a blow against their object of hatred?

At any rate now the little hoods get to live, along with their families, with the shame of their deed forever.
