The disease is well enough known: the angry atheist (formerly a Christian in name only) strikes out with vigor at what he once claimed to believe and taking particular pleasure in deception and deceit insults that faith. But why? What’s the root cause?
Luther hit the nail on the head when he wrote
Ungodliness and smugness follow when the Word of God is despised and is not made use of. People become atheists, Epicureans, and bereft of reason. The examples of even very excellent people prove this. David was a very saintly man and most ardent in his worship of God. But how quickly he is driven to adultery, murder, and blasphemy! For to be asleep with regard to the Word of God is to open the window to the devil. Therefore we have been commanded to be watchful, as is written in 1 Peter 5:8: “Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” And Eph. 5:15 says: “Look carefully, then, how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of the time.” Sluggishness and indifference in sacred matters have often resulted in the greatest lapses and in horrible sins. — Luther’s works, Lectures on Genesis: Chapters 21-25 (4:391).
Angry atheists are simply victims of their own rejection of God. Bereft of sense, they engage in the unutterable evil of assaulting the very God (and anyone and anything connected to him) they once claimed as their own. Rather than being despised such persons should be pitied as they are the most miserable and unhappy of all persons. Intellectually and spiritually crippled they limp lamely through life begging for the crumbs of attention which they once received from God but now receive from none.
