Let’s Talk About This… (via Nuclear Knitting)

I Concur.

Let's Talk About This... I am watching the NBA finals. Every time I see LeBron James on the screen I am filled with rage (as a side note, every time I see Chris Bosh I imitate the dinosaur I think he looks like – you know, the one that has those crazy flaps it puffs out around its face to intimidate the other dinosaurs?) Here’s a list of reasons for my LeBron rage: -He left his hometown team. This in itself is not completely terrible – but the way he did it was. -At the … Read More

Google Earth and the Ancient World

From Jona

The file for Google Earth has been massively expanded. There’s 1770 real markers, but I came across the file of the Barrington Atlas of the Roman World. If you download the masterfile from the blog link above and open it, you will see below Yemen a directory called “New”. In it are the markers of the BARW. They are not extremely accurate, but can be useful. I hope to announce it again once I’ve passed 2000.

Very useful indeed. Check it out.

And Now A Word About The NBA Finals

Dallas, smash the Heat.

That is all.

Insights From the Heidelberg Catechism

Question 56. What believest thou concerning “the forgiveness of sins”?

Answer: That God, for the sake of Christ’s satisfaction, will no more remember my sins, neither my corrupt nature, against which I have to struggle all my life long; (a) but will graciously impute to me the righteousness of Christ, (b) that I may never be condemned before the tribunal of God. (c)

(a) 1 John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 2 Cor.5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. 2 Cor.5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. (b) Jer.31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. Ps.103:3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Ps.103:4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Ps.103:10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. Ps.103:12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. Mic.7:19 He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. Rom.7:23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. Rom.7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? Rom.7:25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin. (c) Rom.8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Rom.8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. Rom.8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: Rom.8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

Forgiveness of sin is – at its heart – a declaration of innocence even though there’s real guilt.  Forgiveness isn’t about us at all, it’s about how God sees us – or rather, how God chooses to see us.

Congressman Weiner: Even Tackier and More Disgusting than We Knew

Today more Weiner news:

The latest pictures, published by the TMZ gossip news website and allegedly tweeted to at least one woman, show Weiner photographing himself with his cellphone in suggestive positions, including in a towel clutching his crotch.  In a potentially career-ending twist, they also appear to have been taken in the House of Representatives gymnasium, said the report, which suggested this could be the final straw that forces his resignation.

Evidently the chap has been sending out smutty photos of himself for a good while.  Why’s all this matter?   Because Americans need to know what kind of people are doing their business and ‘leading’ the country (down the wide path to destruction).  What’s whispered in the corner needs to be shouted from the rooftops.

That Poor Benighted Syrian Blogger Who’s a Lesbian? Yeah, That was a Hoax

But then in a sense all ‘anonymous’ blogs are a hoax.

Real author of the blog ‘A Gay Girl in Damascus’, Tom MacMaster who is based in Turkey, posts apology but insists his fictitious account was truly reflective of the situation on the ground in Syria.

Right- lying to get out the truth… that’s like getting pregnant to oppose children.

After the story of the Syrian-American lesbian blogger who went missing during President Bashar Assad’s crackdown made headlines worldwide, it turns out the entire account was a hoax. Pretending to be Amina Arraf, who wrote a blog called “A Gay Girl in Damascus” which documented updates about Syria’s uprising, Tom MacMaster has confessed that every post on the blog has come from his own imagination, including the whole account of Amina’s disappearance and her detention by Syrian security forces which has been reported on by various news outlets.

Tom’s not only a pretender, he’s just an outright liar.  And now, thanks to him, every time some dreadful deed is done in Syria, we’ll all wonder if it’s just another publicity craving deceiver making junk up.  Well done, Tom.  Well done.

Malawi Knows How to Handle False Prophets like Harold Camping

Make their deception un-spreadable.

A Malawian man has pleaded guilty to circulating false documents, after distributing leaflets predicting the end of the world would happen last month, a court official said Sunday.  Saduki Mwambene, a 39-year-old bicycle repairman, was arrested on April 21 for circulating leaflets published by American televangelist Harold Camping, who had predicted the so-called “Rapture” would occur on May 21.  “Police opened a case for him for circulating false documents that threatened the peace and security of citizens,” said an official with the magistrate’s court in Chitipa district, on the border with Tanzania.  The magistrate granted Mwambene bail and told him to report for a new hearing after May 21, to ensure the prediction was false, said the official, speaking on customary condition of anonymity.

Circulating false documents- that nicely fits the bill.  That’s exactly what Camping was providing- false documents.  Thank you, Malawi, for showing us the way.

The Sorts of States the United States Supports…

Are the kinds that imprison women for poetry.

A 20-year-old woman who recited poems critical of Bahrain’s rulers — and later claimed she was beaten in jail — was sentenced Sunday to a year in prison as part of the kingdom’s crackdown on Shiite protesters calling for greater rights.  The ruling by a special security tribunal sent a strong message that Bahrain’s Sunni monarchy is not easing off on punishments linked to the unrest despite appeals for talks with Shiite groups in the strategic Gulf island nation, which is home to the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet.  Ayat al-Qurmezi became a minor celebrity among protesters after reciting poems critical of Bahrain’s king and prime minister during gatherings in the capital’s Pearl Square, which was the hub for Shiite-led demonstrations that broke out in February after drawing inspiration from the Arab uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt.

We support democracy except when it interferes with foreign policy aims.  The we sit silently while women are imprisoned for reading a poem.

Boehner Jokes, About Weiner’s Name…

Only a Washington-onian would completely miss the irony and hypocrisy.

U.S. House Speaker John Boehner drew laughs from an audience at Ohio State University with a joke about the name of a colleague involved in a scandal over lewd photos.  Boehner said Sunday during a commencement speech at Ohio Stadium that his own last name has been pronounced to rhyme with the words honor and leaner and even “boner.”  Then he said: “Thank God it’s not Weiner.”

Boehner got emotional several times during his brief speech to thousands of graduates and about 40,000 of their relatives and friends.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone cry as much as that guy.  He cries more than Joel did all those years he missed being #1…

He encouraged students to work hard, be humble and persevere. He said they should not be afraid to occasionally shed a tear of thanks for the gifts in their lives.

Yeah, sure, every now and then…  Anyways, Well done Dr. Boehner…

Obama’s Standing up to Israel? Who Would Have Ever Imagined It

I love the way Ms Rubin titles her op-ed ‘Obama bullies Israel’ – as if Israel hasn’t been doing that to the US by means of AIPAC and other lobbyists for decades.

Since the president’s Arab Spring speech, friends of Israel have been nervous about at least two issues: the promise Israel would not have to sit down with those who seek its destruction and the negotiations based on the “1967 borders with land swaps.” This weekend it became apparent that there is much to worry about and that the Obama administration has been playing a game usually practiced by the Palestinians, namely telling its domestic audience one thing and the negotiating parties something different.

Her tone, so defensive.  So ‘woe is me if our way isn’t perceived as the only way’.

Is the U.S. president pressuring Israel to adopt a position that is not its own and diminishes its bargaining position?

I hope so.  Israel has pressured the US to adopt a position not its own and diminished the US’s standing around the world since 1967.  It’s time for Israel to know what that’s like.  It’s past time for the United States to cut the cord.  There would have been peace in the middle east decades ago if the United States had been an honest broker instead of an Israeli patsy.

Pentecost Sunday: The ‘Birthday of the Church’

Have a great Pentecost Sunday!

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance. 5 Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language. 7 They were amazed and astonished, saying, “Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were born? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya around Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God.”

When the Spirit descended the curse of the Tower of Babel was lifted and all those divided by sin were now united in Christ. The ‘tongues’ they spoke weren’t the insane babblings of the Montanists or their modern counterparts, the Pentecostals; they were actual languages spoken to actual people the actual words of the gospel so that faith could be born and not some silly sense of spiritual superiority put on display.

Happy birthday, Church- the place where divisions die and the centrality of Christ displayed.

Gwyneth Paltrow, Here’s Your Dilly!

Yet another dilettante mumbling about the Bible when she hasn’t a clue, Paltrow has decided to throw her theological anorexia at the issue of homosexuality and the bible.

Taking care not to condemning the sanctity of the Christian church, the actress then asked the question of whether or not the Bible really does find homosexuality sinful.   ‘What does it actually say in the bible that will cause some people to be upset by my line of thinking?’ she mused.  Religious institutions and pious fans have yet to respond to the actress’s comments.

Well Dilly Winner, if you would actually read it you’d discover a book in the New Testament called Romans.  And in the opening chapter of Romans you would discover a section which, along with condemning gossip and theft and idol worship, is condemnation of woman with woman sex and man with man sex.  It can’t be exegeted around, it can only be ignored or willfully misinterpreted.

So, Miss, here’s your Dilly.  Stick to acting.  Leave exegesis to people who know how to do it.  We don’t show up on your set and tell you how to play your part; you should stay away from our field too.

Gabrielle Giffords: An Update

Here are the first photos since the shooting.  She looks great.  Thank God.

Giffords has been in a Houston rehab facility since two weeks after the Jan. 8 shooting. Six people were killed and 13 were injured, including Giffords.  Since the shooting, the only time the public was able to glimpse Giffords was April 27 as she boarded a plane to Florida to watch astronaut husband Mark Kelly launch into space. The grainy footage showed Giffords slowly but purposefully walking up the airplane’s stairs.  Since the shooting, the only time the public has gotten a glimpse of Giffords was April 27 as she boarded a plane to Florida to watch astronaut husband Mark Kelly launch into space.
