As Long as America is More Willing to Pay for Bombs Than it is for Educated Workers…

The more certain it is that China and other developing countries will surpass and supplant us as the leading economic power.  But lawmakers, being themselves by and large the dumbest of our citizenry, continue to pander to the military-industrial complex and fund war, murder, death, and killing.

It’s astonishing that a simple truth makes no impact on lawmakers minds:

We need intelligent and educated workers for the jobs of today and tomorrow.

But they don’t get it.  Meanwhile they love to talk about how they love children and how they want to provide a better future for them.  Yet if they really did, they would put their priorities in order and we would put our resources where our rhetoric is.

Aussies, Don’t Miss This TV Program

May-10 7:30p.m. SBS2-TV: Lost Worlds The Bible Unearthed. Professor Israel Finkelstein and historian Neil Silberman compare the discoveries made by archaeology with biblical texts to test the historical veracity of the Old Testament, the foundation text of the three main monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The investigation in this episode continues by focusing on who put the biblical texts into writing. And who were the Israelites of the Old Testament times?

It’s a fantastic series and really the best of the genre.  Indeed, if you aren’t familiar with Finkelstein’s work, I recommend The Quest for the Historical Israel, The Bible Unearthed DVD (that’s one fantastic work my friends, and I reviewed it a few years back in the Scandinavian Journal of the Old Testament), and of course The Bible Unearthed in printed form.

Do You Have a Gun at your House?

That question will soon become, it seems, illegal (or potentially problematic) in Florida for doctors.

Florida is set to become the first state to pass a law that would limit doctors’ ability to council parents about gun safety in the home. Pediatricians decry the law as wrongheaded, and they’re backed by statistics that suggest the law will kill kids. Last week, the state legislature approved a bill that would make it legal to impose punishment on doctors who ask about guns kept in the home. The bill awaits approval from Florida Gov. Rick Scott, who is known to support gun rights and will likely sign the bill, said Dr. Louis St. Petery, a pediatrician in Tallahassee, Fla., and executive vice president of the Florida Pediatric Society.

The NRA is behind the law… of course. Because the NRA doesn’t care that

A gun in the home is 43 times more likely to kill someone known to the family than it is to kill someone in self-defense, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). And many victims of accidental gun injuries and death are under age 25, research has shown. Further, states with the most guns at home have suicide rates double rates of states with the fewest guns, and those suicides are often children. Pediatricians argue it’s vital to ask about guns in the home so they can advise parents about risks and make sure the guns are stored properly, all in order to prevent injury and death in children. “For pediatricians, prevention is the name of the game,” St. Petery said.

But for the NRA and the death lovers they’ve bought off in legislative bodies, it’s all about money. Lives? Who cares. Money for the gun industry? That matters a lot because guns are the gods of the feckless.

Florida is nothing more than a suburb of Texas.

America at its very Worst

This guy puts the ugly in ugly American. He is America at its worst. Someone needs to explain to me how the hatred he exhibits is any whit different from the hatred of Bin Laden, or how it’s different from the celebrations in the Palestinian territories when 9/11 happened.

The Pentagon’s Most Vile Secret Weapon Exposed, At Long Last

The American commando team that killed Osama Bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan, reportedly included a dog, sparking furious speculation about the dog’s identity and discussion of the role of canines in war. Less publicized—and far more essential to top-secret U.S. military operations—are cats.

You’ll have to go here to see the terrifying beasts in action.

No ‘Holy Man’ Sexually Assaults Anyone

A self-styled Greek Orthodox “holy man” has been jailed in Australia for 15 years after he was found guilty of tricking two women into having sex with him by claiming it would lift black magic curses placed on their families.

So absurd. Why do people believe such idiocy?

Tony Golossian, 63, was considered to have special spiritual powers, including the ability to talk to angels, by some members of Sydney’s Greek community. But in his trial last year a court heard that he used his respected position in the community to “brainwash” two women, repeatedly raping them during “prayer sessions” over the course of seven years and telling them that if they resisted one of their family members would fall ill or die. During the rapes, which his co-accused Arthur Psichogios also took part, he would blindfold the women and tell them that they were dreaming.

So absurd. Why do people believe such stupidity? How in need of mental assistance are the victims and others who fell for his foolishness?  People… they can be so annoying.

Drunk Teens in Arizona Aren’t Coddled…

At least not by Officer Friendly, who saw fit to body slam a teen girl.

Phoenix Police are investigating the arrest of a 15-year-old girl who was seen on tape being slammed to the ground by the arresting officer.  Officer Patrick Larrison has been placed on administrative leave while police carry out both an internal and criminal investigation into the arrest.  A YouTube video captured the Jan. 25 arrest on camera, but police didn’t become aware of the video until this Tuesday. Someone in the police department saw the video and reported it.

But this shouldn’t be surprising.  Just think what he would have done to a drunk teen girl who was hispanic!  It is Arizona after all…

Insights From the Heidelberg Catechism

Question 28. What advantage is it to us to know that God has created, and by his providence does still uphold all things?

Answer: That we may be patient in adversity; (a) thankful in prosperity; (b) and that in all things, which may hereafter befall us, we place our firm trust in our faithful God and Father, (c) that nothing shall separate us from his love; (d) since all creatures are so in his hand, that without his will they cannot so much as move. (e)

(a) Rom.5:3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; James 1:3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. Ps.39:9 I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; because thou didst it. Job 1:21 And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. Job 1:22 In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly. (b) Deut.8:10 When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the LORD thy God for the good land which he hath given thee. 1 Thess.5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. (c) Ps.55:22 Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. Rom.5:4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope: (d) Rom.8:38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Rom.8:39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (e) Job 1:12 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD. Job 2:6 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life. Acts 17:28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. Acts 17:25 Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; Prov.21:1 The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.

Without the assurance that God’s providence holds sway over life, life itself makes no sense and has no meaning.

Ok CNN and the Washington Post, Which is It?

News outlets can be so annoying- reporting widely divergent facts within minutes of one another.  This is precisely why they should never report anything having to do with the Bible.  They can’t get anything right and they certainly never have people on staff who know anything about the Bible.

Texas, When Are you Going to Get a Clue and Require Guns to be Locked Up?

How many little kids have to die tragically?  Or do you simply not care and only have interest in the rights of your idiotic residents to leave their bolt action rifles lying around in case Santa Anna comes back from the dead and attacks again…

Some in Texas want to leave the Union. I wish Texas would leave the Union.  It’s a third world country all it’s own.

A 4-year-old boy is dead after being shot in the stomach by a 5-year-old sibling who was playing with a bolt-action rifle in the family’s Texas home, authorities said. Victoria County authorities said the children’s parents were at the home in Telferner in southern Texas when the shooting happened late Wednesday. Chief Deputy Terry Simons told the Victoria Advocate that investigators are trying to determine why the children were left unsupervised. The parents drove their wounded son to a nearby grocery to meet with paramedics, who then rushed the boy to a hospital.

That’s right, mom and dad were in the house.  Nice…  And isn’t it grand that the gun was closer to the kids than the parents…  Those parents should be arrested, tried, and convicted of negligent homicide and facilitating a death.

Why, in the name of God, don’t parents think?????   So enraging.  [HT Tom Verenna on FB for the story].

Why Do Muslim Mobs Attack Christians in Retaliation for the Actions of Western Countries?

Prof. Herman Selderhuis, on the Reformation

Dr. Herman Selderhuis.

‘Christ our Captain’ : An Introduction to Huldrych Zwingli

The Young Zwingli

The previously planned project titled ‘Christ our Captain: the Piety of Huldrych Zwingli’ is heading in another direction. Let me explain.

I had finished, for the most part, the first two chapters and had sent them along to the publisher for his input.  His response indicated that my inclusion of biographical materials which did not put Zwingli in the most pious light were unwanted.

So rather than write a book about Zwingli which whitewashed him and would be nothing but a hagiography, I’ve decided to change direction and instead publish with another publisher a volume titled ‘Christ our Captain: An Introduction to Huldrych Zwingli’.

The outline will remain essentially the same: an introductory chapter including biographical material followed by chapters highlighting Zwingli’s main interests in his own words.

While I understand the former publisher’s desire to paint Zwingli pious (and he surely was), the idea of removing his defects simply so that he appeared more pious than he really was – well, it’s something that I cannot do.

Anyway, here’s the table of contents-

Preface
Introduction: The Life of Zwingli
Chapter One: Zwingli on Prayer
Chapter Two: Zwingli on Salvation
Chapter Three: Zwingli on Christ
Chapter Five: Zwingli on the Church
Chapter Six: Zwingli on Scripture
Chapter Seven: Zwingli on Heaven
Bibliography

I imagine that it will be done by the Spring of next year.  When it’s out, I’ll certainly mention it since I know it will interest a lot of people.

The Function and Purpose of the Doctrine of Providence

Calvin says it best when he says

… when once the light of Divine Providence has illumined the believer’s soul, he is relieved and set free, not only from the extreme fear and anxiety which formerly oppressed him, but from all care. For as he justly shudders at the idea of chance, so he can confidently commit himself to God.

This, I say, is his comfort, that his heavenly Father so embraces all things under his power—so governs them at will by his nod—so regulates them by his wisdom, that nothing takes place save according to his appointment; that received into his favour, and entrusted to the care of his angels neither fire, nor water, nor sword, can do him harm, except in so far as God their master is pleased to permit.

The doctrine of Providence, the twin sister of Predestination, isn’t a horror but a joy; it isn’t a burden, it is a relief.

Have You Been Praying for the Folk Along the Mississippi?

There’s reason to.  Take a look at Memphis, where the river is higher than it has ever been and the crest isn’t expected for another week…  There have been tens of thousands of people affected by this flooding but the national news scarcely mentions it.  I suppose the death of one Muslim is more important than the lives of multitudes of Americans…

Indeed, even the biblibloggers are silent (because, as we all know, for most theology, the bible, and life don’t even intersect).

Ah, if only the victims lived in some third world hinterland, the genteel and concerned would be raising funds and parading down the cyber streets to gain the suffering attention and aid.

More Pastoral Misconduct

A ‘Pastor’ in South Carolina has been arrested for stealing over $253,000 from the church.

A former pastor of Elmwood Avenue Church of God is charged with stealing $253,827 in church donations over a 10-year-period, according to Columbia police.  Investigators arrested 53-year-old Charles Edward Ledford on Tuesday and charged him with multiple counts of breach of trust with fraudulent intent.  Police opened the investigation in April after the church’s new pastor, Byron E. Powers, told police that “several members of the church complained” early this year about their personal donation records from 2010 not matching the church’s records, according to the report.  Powers started investigating the church’s bank accounts, and discovered a bank account the church was not aware of named “CHURCH OF GOD MINISTRY ACCOUNT.” According to the report, $253,827.46 had been deposited and withdrawn through the hidden account since it was opened in 2001.

Unaided by the grace of God, persons are slaves of total depravity.

Investigators arrested Ledford Tuesday morning and booked him into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. A judge set Ledford’s bond at $100,000 Tuesday afternoon and released him on his word that he’ll show for his court dates.

Corruption.

Al-Qaeda Thinks Bin Laden is Dead, Now Will the Aluminum Foil Hat Wearers?

The Washington Post reports

Al-Qaida has issued its first confirmation of Osama bin Laden’s death in an Internet statement posted on militant websites.  Friday’s statement by the terror network says bin Laden’s blood “will not be wasted” and it will continue attacking Americans and their allies.

Only one question now remains: how long before the loony conspiracy theorists chime in with their crazy theories about bin Laden actually being spirited away to a secret CIA camp where he’s even now divulging secrets to interrogators?

The Death of a Fool

The Daily Beast has a frank denunciation of Osama bin Laden, opining that he ‘died as a fool and left no legacy‘.  It’s brutal and brilliant.  The thesis:

Osama bin Laden thought he was launching a revolution, but by the time he died the Arab Spring and America’s mortgage meltdown made him irrelevant. Novelist Dana Vachon on the terrorist’s non-legacy.

The opening paragraph:

Osama bin Laden was already made an old fool by the Arab Spring. It was a million young bodies, their unsated creature needs, a generation of Arabs who were only 9 or 11 when 9/11 happened, that pushed the Middle East into modernity, in the end. It was taxi drivers and street vendors and people with no jobs. And they revealed bin Laden for what he always was, a trust fund brat peddling delusions of past grandeur as a cure for the present’s pains.
