The Justice Department said in a letter to the NCAA that it has opened an antitrust inquiry into the Bowl Championship Series system. The BCS excludes some athletic conferences from the formula for choosing schools to play in major bowl games.
The BCS is rubbish. Pure idiotic rubbish. The NCAA needs to be investigated for implementing it. Let’s hope the JD slams them with such heat that they have to dump it. It would be the best thing that could happen to College football.
Southern California prosecutors have charged a 10-year-old boy with murdering his neo-Nazi father. The boy was charged Wednesday in Riverside County juvenile court with a count of murder involving the use of a gun. Authorities claim that he intentionally shot 32-year-old Jeff Hall at his Riverside home on Sunday. Authorities aren’t talking about a motive.
No one ever really knows how horrific a home is until one of the children in it snaps.
Hall was a regional leader of the National Socialist Movement, which promotes white separatism. His other four children have been taken into protective custody.
What a life. What a world.
An Italian groom left hanging at the altar after his runaway bride changed her mind at the last minute because she was in love with another man is now suing her for 500,000 euros (743,000 dollars). The 32-year-old said he had suffered emotional and material damages after booking a villa for the wedding outside Rome, reserving a honeymoon on a Pacific island and refurbishing an apartment to his fiancee’s tastes.
She sounds like a real treasure– requiring all sorts of things even before the I-do’s were uttered. Here in the States she’d probably be called a gold-digger (which is just what she sounds like) –
Wednesday’s report by Italy’s ANSA news agency said the man, referred to only by his first name, Riccardo, was already in the church when his fiancee’s brother told him she would not be coming and the priest cancelled the service. The report said that Riccardo had hired lawyers and filed a lawsuit, which emphasised that he and his family had borne all the costs for the wedding.
Anyway- as many times as this kind of thing happens it’s nice to see a man be proactive about retribution. Get your pound of flesh, my brother, get your pound of flesh!
What does the fuss over the mysterious and fake ‘lead codices,’ embossed with lines cribbed from Greek tombstones and a portrait of Jesus copied from a Roman mosaic, tell us about religion in the 21st century? People, especially Christians, want to believe, but what about Jews? “On Faith and Forgeries.” Jewish Ideas Daily, May 4, 2011.
Alex is a great writer and has loads of sense. I’m sure his essay will enlighten you.
Oh geesh. Overly sensitive people are truly annoying. I think if they named a mission ‘the bunny’ PETA would be angry and if they named it ‘Indian Go Getter’ the Indians would be mad and if they named it ‘Cracker Breaker’ we white folk would be all up in their grill…
Heavens to betsy, it’s just a stupid code name. The government doesn’t need to waste time investigating it. They need to enact an energy policy that makes us independent. When they get that done, they can piddle with the millions of ‘special interest’ groups that whine and whinge for attention.
And if everyone’s going to get mad, as far as I’m concerned they can name every black (oops… that will make the Blacks mad) op mission ‘kill Jim West’. I won’t be bothered. I won’t care.
Heinrich Bullinger inherited from Zwingli an absolute loathing of Swiss mercenary service and on the 4th of May, 1549, he wrote his little Flugschrift Gegen eine Solddienstallianz mit Frankreich. It commenced with a theme verse, Psalm 146:3-
אַל־תִּבְטְח֥וּ בִנְדִיבִ֑ים בְּבֶן־אָדָ֓ם׀ שֶׁ֤אֵֽין ל֥וֹ תְשׁוּעָֽה׃
And then in 4 parts he makes it abundantly clear that foreign alliances are bad for the Swiss and counter to the Gospel (!). He poignantly asserts that the only thing that comes of foreign alliances is Swiss houses emptied of children and wives bereft of their husbands. Such alliances, further, provoke the wrath of God!
Policy makers in the U.S. should read Bullinger. They could learn a thing or two.
Well I can assure you, it wouldn’t have been any English version- not even the KJV (!) (sorry, KJV only people- you’re just rancidly wrong).
The Sheffield KJV 400th BBC talk on the question- ‘What Bible would Jesus Like’ is worth hearing. Yesterday’s BBC interview begins at the 1:21 mark and lasts around 10 minutes.
The former governor thinks he can get away with comparing higher taxes to the Holocaust because of his “unequalled friendship” with Israel. But is he really an ally of the Jewish community? After all he’s done for Israel, Mike Huckabee does not appreciate being criticized for comparing American debt to the Holocaust. Thus on Tuesday, when the Anti-Defamation League’s Abraham Foxman chastised him for doing just that, he responded with anger and a hint of menace, saying, “Israel and Jewish people need to make friends, not insult the ones they have.” Such words are unlikely to convince many Jews that Huckabee is their ally. The statement should serve as a reminder that the aggressive Zionism of the Christian right does not translate into sensitivity toward broader Jewish concerns. The contretemps started Saturday, when both Huckabee and Michele Bachmann gave speeches likening the United States’ fiscal future to the Nazi genocide. Speaking at a conservative forum in New Hampshire, Bachmann recalled learning about the Holocaust as a child and wondering whether her mother did anything to stop it. “There is no analogy to that horrific action,” she said, before making an analogy to that horrific action: “We are seeing eclipsed in front of our eyes a similar death and a similar taking away. It is this disenfranchisement that I think we have to answer to.”
Are these politicians really this stupid? It must take absolute decades of utter ineptitude to hone such witlessness to the razor sharp edge they give it. First, to equate taxes with murder is just downright moronic. And second, to believe that you can get away with it because the Jews like you so much is mindlessness. Israel loves Huckabee and his Christian Zionist ilk only and so long as they continue to give Israel unquestioning support. Israel uses Christian Zionists as lobbyists and that’s all. They care as little for the lunatics as the lunatics care for the truth.
So, well done, Governor, you’ve elevated silliness to a whole new level.
When you can’t get a license to excavate in Egypt?
This is both shocking and disgusting. Stephen has the tale.
This makes me worried indeed: Freedom of speech and women’s rights just took a major hit in Denmark earlier today when the public prosecutor found Lars Hedegaard, the President of the Danish (and International) Free Press Society, guilty of “hate speech” under section 266b of the Danish penal code. Hedegaard’s crime was to note “the great number of family rapes in areas dominated by Muslim culture in Denmark.” The prosecutor’s crime is far greate … Read More
News outlets are apparently debating whether or not to publish photos of the dead bin Laden. Personally, I don’t care to see them and I don’t want to see them. I’ve seen my share of dead people. And I’ve also seen my fair share of dying people. Death is a regular intruder into the daily routine when one does the particular job I do.
It’s not that I fear seeing a photo of bin Laden. As I said, I’ve seen plenty of death and some of it gruesome. I just don’t need to see it.
But- I think the photo should be published- for several reasons.
First, some won’t believe he’s dead until they see him dead. So to cut off the conspiracy theorists and aluminum foil helmet wearing lot, it needs to be published.
Second, and perhaps more importantly, the photo needs to be published so that people will get a sense of the high price of terrorism. Potential terrorists may well see a photo of a dead bin Laden and at least momentarily consider their course. If #1 can be gotten to, so can Mr. Insignificant.
And third, most importantly, the photo should be published so that all those unfamiliar with the face of death can see it in living color (no pun intended). Death is real. And it’s ugly. And it never looks like anything the movies portray it to be. It’s never glamorous or exciting or the like. It’s gross and unpleasant. Bowels and bladders empty and eyes glaze over and the effect of seeing it all is unforgettable and makes an important and lasting impression.
Before the funeral home gets hold of the body and pretty’s it up- the face of death is visible in the eyes of every deceased person. And everyone should have to see it several times in their life so that they value life more and become less interested in killing.
So, Washington Post and all the rest, show the photos when you can. Splash them everywhere, and let the whole world be rightly horrified. Maybe, just maybe, people will be a little less interested in their guns then.
There’s a pretty useful little blog tool that folk may find interesting- ‘Is My Blog Working‘. Enter your URL and the site examines your blog and offers an analysis of such things as server IP, feed, and Google/Bing indexing results. It also includes lots of technical info about your blog.
Christian Brady does this every few days (maybe daily but I’m not really sure) and it’s always worth checking out. It’s right smart and nicely done.
And you’re not going to believe it! It was, according to one Peruvian, none other than the dead Pope John Paul II… and the killing counts as John Paul’s latest miracle!!!!! He really is a saint because he rid the world of bin Laden!!!!!
A US military mission that cornered and killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan was nothing short of a miracle, said Peru’s President Alan Garcia, who attributed the divine intervention to newly beatified pontiff John Paul II. “His first miracle has been to rid the world of this incarnation of evil, this demon of hatred and criminality,” the Peruvian leader said, referring to the Al-Qaeda leader. The late John Paul II showed uncanny timing, with his miracle falling on the very same day as a Rome ceremony beatifying him.
Now that’s high comedy! You couldn’t make that up if you sat around locked in a room surrounded by people spouting weird ideas for a year if you tried! Oh you Catholics… The things you say.
Jim’s posted his Jolly Great Hodge Podge Biblioblogging Carnival here. And yes, it’s just as fun as you’d expect a James R. Linville production to be. Nice work, northern cantankerous Jim!
Question 20. Are all men then, as they perished in Adam, saved by Christ?
Answer: No; (a) only those who are ingrafted into him, and, receive all his benefits, by a true faith. (b)
(a) Matt.7:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Matt.22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen.
(b) Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. Isa.53:11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. Ps.2:12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him. Rom.11:17 And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree; Rom.11:19 Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in. Rom.11:20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear: Rom.3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: Heb.4:2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. Heb.4:3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. Heb.5:9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; Heb.10:39 But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul. Heb.11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
The Heidelberg Catechism has no use for Universalism in its Origen-istic form, it’s Barthian manifestation, or it’s Bell-ian hell-ianism. It is unapologetic in its assertion that there is a hell and there will be many who go there simply and merely because they turn away from the only hope offered to mankind.
In other words, the Catechism cares nothing for accusations of exclusivism. It’s authors are joyfully exclusivistic (Christ is the only way of salvation). Brilliant.
It’s quite a shame really that too many Reformed theologians these days like water more than they like wine: like insipidity better than they like stoutness.
