Over at Bible and Interpretation. An excellent little piece, especially given recent events. Enjoy.

John Calvin enjoyed the occasional walk around Geneva and from time to time various of the good citizens of that lovely town would sick their dogs on him as he passed by. Little wonder then that from the pulpit, during sermons, Calvin referred to the Genevans as beasts. He was right.
And it also has the most lax gun laws. And in spite of those corollary facts, voters there think it’s a good idea to continue their ownership and storage of arms laws.
A referendum, launched by a coalition of non-governmental groups, religious authorities and centre-left parties, pushed to have the weapons stored in armouries instead. The initiative also aimed to abolish the practice of allowing those on military service to keep their government-issue assault rifles even after they leave the army. But the coalition failed to secure the votes of both a majority of the population and cantons. Final results showed that 20 out of 26 cantons were against while 56.3 per cent of the population rejected the initiative.
It’s a sad day for Switzerland.
Stop Suicide, which counted among groups that launched the initiative, said however that Switzerland “missed an opportunity to take targeted measures to reduce the number of suicides.” Rates of suicide using firearms in Switzerland are three times higher than in the rest of Europe, noted Anne-Marie Trabichet, from Stop Suicide.
Easy access to weapons is detrimental to any society. They’ve proved it in Switzerland with their suicide rate and we’ve proved it in the US with our murder rate.
Ann Coulter said she thinks there should be more journalists put in jail during her appearance at the annual CPAC conference on Saturday. Coulter’s comments came during a response to a question from a woman in the audience. The woman initially asked Coulter why she and other Republicans had championed free elections in Iraq but were warning about them in Egypt. “You don’t go around disturbing countries where you have a loyal ally,” Coulter responded. “What is more important though to American values–being friends with israel still or knowing there are jailed dissidents and journalists [in Egypt]?” the woman asked. “What do you mean knowing that there are jailed journalists?” Coulter said. “I think there should be more jailed journalists.” This prompted a huge round of applause from the crowd.
Her blind slavery to some sort of zionist ideology is repulsive and her perverted disposition towards justice in Egypt proves her to be nothing but a lackey of hell itself. That she has an audience is as utterly mystifying as the fact that Limbaugh and Beck do. It can only be explained by the fact that delusional people exist and that they love their own kind.
Administrators at a suburban Chicago high school were apparently not thrilled about the dance moves of their student body–and have banned “back-to-front dancing” from future school functions. Last Monday, parents of students at Geneva High School received a letter notifying them that a “sexually explicit” dance known as “grinding” would be banned during school functions, Geneva Patch reports. In the very awkward letter, Principal Tom Rogers described the dance in painful detail, according toPatch: . . . Rogers defined “grinding” as a “sexually explicit” dance in which one partner stands behind the other while both are facing the same direction. The rear partner grasps the front partner by the hips or midsection and rubs his or her groin against the front partner’s backside. Sometimes the front partner bends over with his or her hands on the knees or floor, making the dance more sexually suggestive.
In the real Geneva Calvin really did ban dancing- but not the sort that’s being banned at the new Geneva. Calvin would stroke out if he saw that profanity and then a number of people would lose their lives. Kids today don’t realize how easy they have it. If Calvin were around now it wouldn’t be the dancing that would be called grinding, it’s what they did to the guilty that would be called grinding.
As couples around the world ready for Valentine’s Day, Islamic officials in Malaysia have warned Muslims against celebrating something “synonymous with vice activities.” The warning follows plans announced last week by several Malaysian states who are planning a crackdown on “immoral acts” during Valentine’s Day as part of a campaign to encourage a sin-free lifestyle. “In reality, as well as historically, the celebration of Valentine’s Day is synonymous with vice activities,” Wan Mohamad Sheikh Abdul Aziz, head of the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM), which oversees the country’s Islamic policies, told state media.
I always dismissed VD because it was an invention of the greeting card industry in an effort to separate people from their hard earned money. But maybe the Malaysians are right and it’s just a day celebrating the vice of vice. I know one thing for sure, all the little ones born to unwed parents 9 months from now or so won’t be to blame. Their VD celebrating parents will be. Because, let’s face it, there are no illegitimate babies, just illegitimate parents.
Finally, a sin free lifestyle sounds like a good idea. Except for one little drawback: you can’t legislate morality. If you could, Geneva would have been the purist city in human history and yet vice and sin were as rampant there as anywhere. It was just hidden better.
So down with VD and up with moral-ity (from the inside out).
Should Vicars in Britain be forced to conduct the ‘weddings’ of homosexual persons?
Dr John Sentamu, the Archbishop of York and the second most powerful cleric in the Church of England, has warned against forcing vicars to conduct same-sex civil partnerships as the Coalition prepares to grant full marriage rights to homosexual couples. The Liberal Democrat Equalities Minister, Lynne Featherstone, is expected to announce that churches, synagogues and other religious settings will be able to host civil partnership ceremonies for the first time. … Liberal Jewish groups, Quakers and other Christian organisations have been pressing the Coalition to introduce the civil partnership reforms, and gay rights campaigners welcomed the latest news. The Church of England, however, has voiced its opposition. Senior Anglican officials have said the Church is unlikely to host civil partnerships, which would include religious readings and hymns under the plan.
No. Never. If the state wants to grant such rights it can answer to God for itself. Religious persons cannot be forced to violate conscience. Ever. By any tyrant.
The Washington Post tells us of yet another act of terrorism in terror plagued Mexico, the Somalia (or Afghanistan) of North America.
Armed men opened fire and hurled a grenade into a crowded nightclub early Saturday, killing six people and wounding at least 37 in a western city whose tranquility has been shattered by escalating battles among drug cartels. The attack in Mexico’s second-largest municipality took place hours after a shoot-out between soldiers and presumed cartel gunmen left eight people dead in the northeastern city of Monterrey. Monterrey is Mexico’s third-largest city. In the Guadalajara attack, assailants in a Jeep Cherokee and a taxi drove up to the Butter Club, located in a bar and restaurant district popular with young people, and sprayed it with bullets.
There’s not an atom’s difference between what these drug cartel demons are doing and the Taliban or Al-Qaeda.
Pray for the good people who remain in Mexico.
Egypt’s prime minister says the caretaker government’s priority now is restoring security as the country transitions from three decades of Hosni Mubarak’s rule to a democracy. Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq spoke at a news conference Sunday after the first Cabinet meeting since Mubarak was forced to step down on Friday. “Our concern now in the Cabinet is security, to bring security back to the Egyptian citizen,” he said.
Let’s all hope and pray they can manage it. They seem to be doing pretty well on their own.
ABC News is reporting
The family of a local woman has filed a lawsuit after she died five days following Lap-Band surgery. John Faitro misses his wife Laurie every single day. They were married for 28 years. The 50-year-old Simi Valley woman died last July, five days after undergoing Lap-Band surgery at Valley Surgical Center in West Hills. He says she became interested in the weight-loss surgery after seeing TV commercials for the 1-800-GET-THIN.
Very sad indeed. America’s fixation of overeating and quick fixes often combine to result in disaster. Weight loss, like weight gain, takes time. Eat less than you need- that’s the cure for obesity. Hard? Sure, but better than the alternative of the quick fix which leads to death or complications from ridiculous medical procedures.
Someone in hell’s ‘Department of tricking people into doing the stupidest things in the name of Christ so as to make Christianity look buffonish and trivial’ has come up with a doosie this time:
If you have ever looked in the mirror and thought, “Good Lord, I need to lose weight,” some very cheerful people in Forest Hills, Queens, are waiting to share the good news with you. And in Park Slope, Brooklyn, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, and in Greenwich Village. And they’ve got snacks. … BOD4GOD, with its txt msg transliteration, with its mixture of spirituality and too too solid flesh, might strike some purists — of religion or fitness — as an irreverent, even offensive, title. These purists would not have heeded the church’s outreach literature. Under the heading “New to the Journey? If so, here’s what to do,” the first suggestion is “relax.” … At last Sunday’s services in the auditorium at Forest Hills High School, however, the first suggestion was to have some candy. A volunteer stood outside in the cold beckoning people with a basket full of candy bars. Another volunteer, with another basket of candy, was 10 feet inside the door. And 10 feet further on was a table with doughnuts and cookies. I’m usually a no-candy-bars-before-breakfast kind of girl, but I make an exception when they are ordained from on high.
Only read on in the essay if you don’t mind doing harm to yourself. Anyway, good work Satan. You’ve managed to deceive a load of people into thinking all God cares about is their happiness and waist-lines.
At any rate, if any video advert applies to this sort of trivialized, self serving, and self indulgent ‘faith’, here it is:
