Ferdinand Hahn’s Theologie (2 volumes) was first published in 2005 by JCB Mohr and it was very expensive. Now a less expensive 2 volume (3rd revised) edition has been published and at 39 Euro for both it’s a steal.
I wish that there was some way to adequately describe the brilliance of presentation, the stunningly magnificent methodology employed, and the absolute thoroughness of these two books. Everything is fair game, from the preaching of Jesus to Paul’s theology to the Catholic Epistles to the Old Testament as the bible of the early church to everything in between. The synoptics’ theology are thoroughly treated and so is the theology of John.
The first volume focuses on the diversity of the New Testament texts and the second volume on the unity of the New Testament’s theology.
But don’t let those overarching categories mislead you. Hahn is thoroughly familiar with the subject matter and isn’t foolish enough to suggest that the New Testament has a single theological message.
If you read German, you need to read these books. As I suggested in the post title, it is the finest Theology of the New Testament since Bultmann’s. And in many respects, it’s better because more complete.
Hahn’s teacher Bornkamm would have been very proud indeed of his student’s accomplishment.
If you’d like to read a review of the earlier second edition, Udo Schnelle has one. And if you don’t read German but still want to know what Hahn has accomplished, there’s also a review in English by Jörg Frey, with whose conclusion I completely agree-
The two volumes by Hahn are a “must” for every biblical scholar or teacher occupied with the New Testament and its theology.
Even though Frey wrote that in 2007, it remains true in 2011 and the appearance of the 3rd revised (less expensive) edition makes it even more accessible and indispensable.
I’m trying to think of a word that describes people worse than dilettantes. Idiots? Imbeciles? Morons? People who should NEVER talk about or be allowed within 10 miles of the Bible or biblical interpretation? Or, more accurately, all of the above. Because all of the above certainly describes Fox News and their utter unfamiliarity with anything related to Scripture.
A page on Fox Nation…claims Obama “misquoted a familiar Bible verse” during his address yesterday:
President Obama misquoted a familiar Bible verse during a faith-based address at the National Prayer Breakfast.”Those who wait on the Lord will soar on wings like eagles, and they will run and not be weary, and they will walk and not faint,” the president said during a speech to several thousand people at the breakfast.
But the actual passage, from Isaiah 40:31, states: “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
Somewhat ironically, while Fox Nation appears to be positioning themselves as the arbiters of authentic Christianity, they seem unfamiliar with the fact that there is more than one version of the Bible. Obama was quoting from the New International Version while Fox Nation was pointing to the King James Version to “debunk” him. This would be funny if it weren’t so pathetic.
Really Fox, please, please, just shut up. Just shut up and never talk about the Bible or Christianity ever again. Every time you do (or Beck does or O’Reilly does) you all just prove to the rest of the world how thoroughly moronic you are. You’re not just dilettantes. You’re far worse. You’re Fox News.
A teenage girl has admitted killing a man with a single punch as he chased after her friend who had stolen his alcohol. Father-of-two Paul Woods, 29, suffered a blood clot on his brain after he was knocked down by Kayleigh Murray outside a shop in Maryhill Road, Glasgow, on July 28. Mr Woods struck his head against the pavement and passed out. He underwent surgery at the Southern General Hospital but died the next day from internal bleeding.
Since it’s Scotland she only has 29 or so murders to go before she’s sent to jail… What kind of people do such things?
Because apparently there you can be convicted of crimes up to 30 times and still not go to jail. Is that absurd or what?
Criminals are being successfully prosecuted for up to 40 offences before they are sent to prison thanks to Scotland’s “soft touch” justice system, Labour’s Holyrood leader has said. Iain Gray produced figures at First Minister’s Questions showing six offenders were sentenced to their first jail sentence last year despite having between 31 and 40 previous convictions. Thousands more were only given their first prison sentence after committing up to 30 crimes, according to the official statistics, which were obtained under the Freedom of Information Act.
And I thought our justice system was snivellingly weak willed. Scotland’s got us beat by a mile. They must have people there like the spineless parents who warn their spoiled brat kids 30 times ‘if you don’t stop that, you’re going to time out… I mean it’…
If I ever snap, you’ll find me in Scotland.
See for yourself.
Best Colbert segment in ages.

Al-Jazeera’s offices in Cairo were stormed and torched and its Website hacked Friday, says the Pan-Arab broadcaster, while the top U.N. human rights official complained that media covering Egyptian pro-democracy protests are being arrested “in a blatant attempt to stifle news.” Qatar-based Al-Jazeera — widely watched in the Middle East — portrayed the attack on its office as an attempt by Egypt’s regime or its supporters to hinder its coverage of the uprising in Egypt. Al-Jazeera said the office was burned along with the equipment inside it.
The world just can’t stop itself from being obnoxious and despicably violent. And the NRA rejoiced. And – by the way – Al-Jazeera is an actual news organization. Unlike Fox.

They’d make a ton off me… most of the papers people present are worthy of precisely the ‘applause’ they get from me (and I’m fairly confident from others as well).

Islam is the solution... Yeah right...
Antonio mentions this little driblet of inhumanity:
14-year-old girl beaten to death in the name of sharia. Could this be what’s in store for Egypt?
That’s the headline and the story is really about the Muslim Brotherhood, but it contains this bit-
The Brotherhood claims to be a moderate party but it makes no bones about the fact that it would try and impose Shariah law on Egypt. A taste of what this might mean for the Egyptian people was recently provided in Bangladesh where a child was beaten to death on the orders of a Muslim cleric. Fourteen-year-old Mosammet Hena was found guilty by a makeshift village court of having an illicit relationship with her 40-year-old cousin and sentenced to 100 lashes. According to the report in today’s Guardian, “Mosammet was dragged inside a house by about 20 to 25 people, including four women. She collapsed unconscious halfway through and was taken to hospital, where she died a week later.” Mosammet’s accuser was Shilpi Begum, the wife of the man she’s alleged to have had an affair with. Begum told the court she’d seen Mosammet speaking to her husband – sufficient evidence to sentence her to 100 lashes in the eyes of the shalish court, apparently. In fact, the local media reports that Mosammet was raped by the 40-year-old man and when his wife heard her cries she ran out of her house and started beating her.
Barbarians. Pure and simple. Just hate filled senseless barbarians. And the same would be true if it were Orthodox Jews or Christians doing such vile deeds. It just happens to be Muslims. This time.
They wouldn’t have to try to keep the tape secret. But the police sometimes like to throw a kid down and kick the nonsense out of him. It keeps the thugs under control, right Houston?
A newly released video appears to show four Houston police officers kicking and stomping on a teenage burglar whose family has since filed a federal lawsuit over the incident. Community activists plan a news conference Thursday, a day after KTRK-TV obtained the surveillance video of the then-15-year-old’s March outside a storage building.
Ok the kid’s apparently a thief. That hardly justifies the beat down that four, count ’em, four cops gave him. If the cops are that incapable of controlling a skinny little kid they probably need to drop the donuts and hit the weights. Thankfully these four goons won’t be ‘enforcing the law’ any longer. They’ve been fired.
It seems cops (and everyone) these days would have learned the lesson of Rodney King: there are cameras everywhere and whatever you do is probably on someone’s phone or video recording device.
I seriously have lost all hope that humanity will ever move beyond the stage of childishness it presently occupies vis a vis its love of violence and the tools thereof. It’s over. Hope in ‘human advancement’ is dead. Not that it ever was a real possibility.
A McMinn County gun store owner wants to help you spend your tax refund; he’ll even help you file your return. Richard Grassano, a partner in All American Gun Shop in Athens, Tenn., also is a certified public accountant with an accounting business in the same building next door to the gun shop on North Congress Parkway. All American is advertising tax preparation services along with a bonus gift card for use at the neighboring gun shop. The gift cards range from $5 to $25 based on the amount of the tax return. Grassano said he’s noticed that gun and ammo sales pick up every year around the time people get their tax returns. Tax season also is the busiest time of the year for his accounting business.
What goes together better than bullets and taxes…. that’s not a recipe for home made cornbread…. Nothing says America like arming angry and unhappy taxpayers…
[Good grief. This is as ridiculous as the churches that pass out guns and call it evangelistic outreach].
Sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying (at the absolute carelessness of some people). Take a new advert from Lutterworth Press for instance-
Do note that Rowley is dead and has been dead for a very long time, even though the advert would imply that he’s alive and well and
a match for anyone working in Great Britain today. His book abounds in original and sometimes daring suggestions which make it a valuable contribution to history, and which, incidentally, make more widely accepted theories look rather silly.
There’s also no indication that all those glowing reviews were written when the book first appeared, decades ago!
[Oh, I’ve made screenshots so you can see the page as it presently exists and not as it will hopefully be once note is taken of the seriously lacking facts that Rowley is dead and the book is old].
With thanks to Philip Davies for pointing it out.

If you want to keep up with whatever happens today, Al-Jazeera is doing a live blog which will be updated moment by moment as necessary.
11:08am: Our reporter in Tahrir Square says protesters are checking the ID’s of people entering the area to make sure no members of the police or other security services are getting in (Egyptian IDs mention the person’s profession). She says the protesters are very welcoming to journalists.
11:02am: Our correspondent says tens of thousands of people have gathered in Tahrir Square, and many more are expected after Friday prayers.
