‘Geoff Hudson’ (if that’s his real name) has been completely fixated on Jeffrey Gibson for years- accusing him of being every biblical email list person, blogger, and everything else under the sun. It’s most bizarre and more than a little creepy really.
Anyway, I posted pics from Atlanta and Hudson couldn’t help himself- he had to comment. And then almost immediately withdrew his comments (before I could reject them).
Still, they do remain until deleted (thanks WordPress!) so I can read them and note their origin, content, and substance. So I captured this screenshot because 1) it’s funny (in a very creepy old guy hanging out in the park next to an elementary school way, not an amusing way) to what lengths Hudson will go in stalking Gibson; and it’s illustrative of the kind of thing which anonymity on the web permits- the very thing which Raphael Golb relied upon in his own stalking of Schiffman and Cargill.

Evil exists. Total depravity is everywhere. Unaided by God’s grace we are all completely capable of the most profoundly wicked behavior.
And then there are those who are so evil as to be beyond the usual categories. Like the guy who did this…
A woman and three young children were found killed at a violent crime scene in a north Florida home on Saturday, and homicide detectives were out looking for whoever might have had a reason to harm them, police said. Police spokesman David McCranie wouldn’t elaborate on the signs of violence police found at the home, but investigators believe the four were slain by someone else. The woman appears to be the mother of the children, two of whom are 6 and one who is 3, he said. He said police “are trying to find out if anyone would want to harm the family.”
Inexplicable evil is explicable only in terms of otherworldly influence. Or in other words, the powers of darkness.
Gott und das Nichtige, published by the Theologischer Verlag Zurich, has been mentioned before but it truly is a most insightful examination of the problem of evil from the perspective of Barth’s theology. It cannot be commended highly enough. It really should be required reading for every Pastor, theologian, and academic.
Seth notes on Facebook the good news-
I’m delighted to announce that the Invention of Hebrew is the winner of the 2010 Frank Moore Cross award from ASOR, “presented to the author of the most substantial volume related to ancient Near Eastern and eastern Mediterranean epigraphy, text and/or tradition.” Douglas Mangrum [sic!] at Biblia Hebraica interviewed me about where the book’s ideas come from and whether new evidence is bearing them out. There’s also mention of an extremely dirty pseudepigraphic text from Guatemala. Because it’s theoretically significant, that’s why.
Mangrum… that’s priceless. Anyway, a hearty congratulations to Seth!
The partygoer who went as a sheep and the idiot who set him on fire both rank up there with the dumbest of the dumb.
A reveller dressed as Larry the Lamb suffered these horrific burns after a prankster set fire to his outfit – and he turned into a human fireball. Peter Buck, 35, spent four hours painstakingly gluing four bags of cotton wool to his torso to look like the famous cartoon character. He went on a boozy night out with a group of mates – also in fancy dress – before ducking out of a pub for a cigarette. With Peter’s permission, a tipsy friend set fire to a loose strand of his costume ‘to see what would happen’. But the joke went horribly wrong and Peter’s lamb costume burst into flames. He ran screaming in agony into a busy main road before a driver swerved, narrowly avoiding mowing him down. Then his friend Paul Bisson – an off-duty firefighter dressed as Jesus – bear-hugged him in a bid to douse the flames.
Good grief. So much for ‘fun’ and ‘drunk’ going together. Via Dot King on FB.
What???? A Pastor being a hypocrite? Heaven forfend, it cannot be (yet again for the billionth time) can it?
The New Jersey preacher who declared Facebook use a sin has shown his true colors: Reverend Cedric Miller admitted that he and his wife had a three-way sexual relationship with a young male church assistant. NBC New York appears to have gotten the story first about the affair. So did the young male church assistant try to contact Miller on Facebook, eliciting jealousy from the reverend’s wife? If this motivated the preacher’s suggestion that his flock get rid of their accounts on the social network, a psychiatrist might call his edict an act of projection, in addition to the hypocrisy that most of us can see.
Gross. I hope they fire him. He’s unworthy of the office. And his wife’s more than a bit of a skank. With thanks (?) to Irene Hahn for telling me about it- on Facebook (oh the irony).
A Duke University cancer scientist resigned Friday amid concerns about his research that arose after the university started probing whether he’d lied on a grant application. School spokeswoman Debbe Geiger also said another researcher at the school is asking the journal Nature Medicine to retract a paper he published with Anil Potti, the scientist who’s stepping down. Potti’s collaborator Joseph Nevins said some of the tests in the research they produced for that paper can not be duplicated. Other papers submitted by Potti are also being reviewed, and three clinical trials based on his research have been closed, Geiger said.
Uh oh, it looks like Potti’s career is in the toilet. I wonder how such scandalous behavior could come from a person with an ‘accredited’ degree… They must not have taught ethics at the ‘accredited’ school he attended. [Remark concerning ‘Anil’ left aside for Roland Boer].
New Zealand rescuers have yet to make contact with 29 trapped miners as fears of lethal gas levels prevented any chance of a rescue on Saturday, some 30 hours after an explosion ripped through the remote colliery dug into the side of a mountain. Air quality tests were being taken at the ventilation shafts, adding to the agonizing wait for family and friends of the miners, who range in age from 17 to 62.
I hope it turns out as well as the Chilean mine episode has. I hope. In the meanwhile I’ll pray for all involved.
And now suggests that the use of condoms can be justified in some situations.
Pope Benedict XVI says in a new book that condoms can be justified for male prostitutes seeking to stop HIV, a stunning turnaround for a church that has long opposed condoms and a pontiff who has blamed them for making the AIDS crisis worse. The pontiff made the comments in a book-length interview with a German journalist, “Light of the World: The Pope, the Church and the Signs of the Times,” which is being released Tuesday. The Vatican newspaper ran excerpts on Saturday.
The times, they are a-changin…. Read the rest of the really astonishing essay. And isn’t it interesting that the Pope is willing to allow condoms but I wonder if he had anything to say about male prostitution. It might be quite intriguing to pose a follow up- ‘so, Holy Father, is it then fair to say that male prostitution is permissible so long as they use condoms in the quest to conquer AIDS?’
This is simply absurd. Just simply absurd. Someone needs to tell the TSA to balance genuine security and safety concerns and common sense!
A longtime Charlotte, N.C., flight attendant and cancer survivor told a local television station that she was forced to show her prosthetic breast during a pat-down. Cathy Bossi, who works for U.S. Airways, said she received the pat-down after declining to do the full-body scan because of radiation concerns. The TSA screener “put her full hand on my breast and said, ‘What is this?’ ” Bossi told the station. “And I said, ‘It’s my prosthesis because I’ve had breast cancer.’ And she said, ‘Well, you’ll need to show me that.’ ” Bossi said she removed the prosthetic from her bra. She did not take the name of the agent, she said, “because it was just so horrific of an experience, I couldn’t believe someone had done that to me. I’m a flight attendant. I was just trying to get to work.”
That’s just simply ridiculous. They should find the offender and scold her. And then fire her for lack of sense and respect.
An industry, we must constantly remind people, which only developed in the United Statesin its present form in the 1960’s (in spite of what its proponents would have you believe about its eternality). With many thanks to Craig Martin for directing my attention to this Time Magazine essay. Perhaps the day will return when competency in a field matters more than an institution’s willingness to pay particular fees to buy accreditation (or ‘believability’).
The Quest for Solomon’s Mines airs Tuesday night (I’m going to live blog it). Anyway, I mention it because I’ve arrived home to find waiting a package from the Producers who have sent a DVD and a very cool NOVA t-shirt along (just because I mentioned it). Isn’t that nice! So thanks to the NOVA people.
Speaking of arriving home, it was a great week, but it’s always best to be home. And at that, here’s a pic I snapped of the dvd and shirt (which on the back says ‘What are you doing Tuesday night?’ I think I’ll wear it to the gym…
In 1920 Georg Finsler died. Shortly thereafter, Walther Koehler penned a sensitive obituary for his friend and colleague. Finsler was one of the most important scholars of Zwingli in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His contributions to the field were massive.
You can read Koehler’s tribute here. Lest we forget…
