J. Ramsey Michaels is the author of this very new massive volume on the Gospel of John which consists of a lengthy introduction in seven parts and exposition in five. You can read an excerpt here. The awesome folk at Eerdmans have sent a copy for review, which I post in parts as follows:
Introduction
I. PREAMBLE: THE LIGHT (1:1-5)
II. THE TESTIMONY OF JOHN (1:6–3:36)
III. JESUS’ SELF-REVELATION TO THE WORLD (4:1–12:50)
IV. JESUS’ SELF-REVELATION TO THE DISCIPLES (13:1–17:26)
V. VERIFICATION OF JESUS’ SELF-REVELATION IN HIS PASSION AND RESURRECTION (18:1–21:25)
This is an excellent, excellent commentary. I recommend it mightily.
This is one I am going to want to get soon! Thanks and look forward to the review – he also did a commentary for IVP, your favorite publisher, 🙂 on the book of Revelation I want to check out too.

Have you used Leon Morris’ commentary on John in the NICNT that this one is replacing? I would be interested in your take on the value of the two in comparison to one another. Obviously Morris is dated scholastically, but I would be interested in some of the particulars. I am using a number of commentaries currently on a two year preaching through the Gospel according to John (one of those being the one by Morris). Thanks for offering to share your review of the volume with us all! Blessings!

Thanks anyways Jim. I just thought I’d ask in case you had any help in that area. Likely I’ll be acquiring Michael’s volume before too long (and just decide whether I should pass on Morris or keep both).

well given my hazy recollection of morris, i’d clear him off the shelf and make room for his much more worthy replacement.

thanks matt. ask him why he skipped the very important ‘cleansing of the temple’ chronology question. i understand his point but i think he really should have dealt with it.

Is knowledge of Greek a prerequisite to really understanding this book? Would this book be suitable for a layman? Thanks.

Can you please post his comments on John 7:53-8:11? Its his treatment of this key text that will make or break his commentary as far as many are concerned.
Peace
