There Won’t Be Peace in Our Lifetimes

Israel’s government ended an unofficial freeze on new building in east Jerusalem, approving the construction of 238 homes in Jewish neighborhoods as peace talks remained stuck Friday over the fate of a broader construction slowdown throughout the West Bank. The Israeli Housing Ministry’s announcement that developers would be allowed to bid for contracts to build new homes in the neighborhoods of Ramot and Pisgat Zeev drew swift condemnation from Palestinian negotiators.

It’s just another slap in the face of the Palestinians. Israel should just go ahead and line them all up and put them in barbed wired encampments and call the apartheid what it is, apartheid.

“This announcement is a very clear-cut indication that the choice of Mr. Netanyahu is settlements, not peace,” chief negotiator Saeb Erekat said, charging the Israelis with “closing all doors on attempts to revive the direct negotiations.” Netanyahu’s office refused to comment Friday.

Why should he say anything. He doesn’t want peace and his actions and the actions of his government prove it. Anyway, he need not fear any sort of US embargo or protest. Even if the Administration complains it will be as harmless as lazily swatting at a fly. The US just doesn’t care about the fate of the Palestinians. To our shame. Our damnable one sided-ness on this issue will lead history to scorn us and rightly hold us in contempt.
