I’m not sure why they had a moratorium in place in the first place. They never intended to halt drilling in the Gulf. That would be too inconvenient. Oh and it would ‘cost’ too much (because as we all know, money is really what it’s all about so far as government and industry are concerned- all other considerations are no consideration at all).
The Obama administration, under heavy pressure from the oil industry and others in the Gulf Coast, lifted the moratorium on deep water drilling that it imposed in the wake of the disastrous BP oil spill. The six-month ban had been scheduled to expire Nov. 30, but Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said Tuesday he was moving up that deadline because new rules imposed after the spill have strengthened safety measures and reduced the risk of another catastrophic blowout.
The Obama Administration is just as much slave to industry as any Republican Administration has been. That’s why the moratorium was such a joke in the first place. Few see themselves as custodians of the planet (in spite of all the ‘green fever’ these days). Instead, the majority only sees itself in terms of personal gain or loss. If it causes personal loss, there’s just no interest in it. If it offers personal gain, there’s nothing too dangerous- even if the result is widespread death.
