Eine freundliche Bitte und Ermahnung an die Eidgenossen

On 13 July, 1522, Huldrych Zwingli wrote what amounts to an ‘open letter’ to the Pastors of the Confederation urging them to preach the Gospel in its purity and simplicity.  His Eine freundliche Bitte offers, in 11 points, why they should.  All 11 points are, unsurprisingly, undergirded with and established by Scripture.  Unscriptural preaching should be abandoned and banished from every Swiss pulpit.

The fact is, what Zwingli urges in 1522 is as much needed now as it was then. Too many Pastors preach anything but the Gospel. They much prefer to ‘tickle the ears’ of their hearers.
