Ever since Gerhard von Rad described various passages in Jeremiah as ‘Confessions’ scholars have discussed and debated the idea. Personally, I’ve never been persuaded that von Rad was wrong. In fact, I continue to refer to those passages as Jeremiah’s confessions and unless someone can offer really persuasive argumentation to the contrary, I imagine I shall always.
Today Bible and Interpretation offers a new essay by Don Benjamin which asks whether the confessions are memoirs are laments. See if he convinces you. He didn’t persuade me.

These words come to my mind as often as I sift alot of the silly writings of the higher critics.
