Rick Warren: Pastor of the ‘Church of Tares’, Not Wheat

In this video, which really is quite good, Rick Warren is exposed for the false teacher he is; carefully, methodically, and from the foundation of Scripture. You should watch it.

  1. Jim,
I agree with you that Warren is problematic. But the video starts off criticizing Warren for his understanding of the word μετανοεω (to change your mind). He video voice simply says, “repentance means to turn from sin, to Christ.” That’s not what the word means. Επιστρεφω does duty in that respect, it’s hard for me to watch the rest of the video because the author does not seem to know the Greek. Criticizing a pastor for a misunderstood lexical issue and then handwaving a definition into existence is sad.

The other criticisms, which I decided to watch, were mostly good.

I would say that the pastor who criticized Warren’s gospel presentation in the video was vulnerable to a similar criticism. He said that Warren’s gospel did not include the cross, the atonement, etc. But, Paul’s gospel includes also the resurrection, God’s kingdom, and the “obedience of faith.” This guy did not mention any of those things in his description of the gospel. Most of them were features absent from many of the gospel sermons in acts. I get the impression that many of the people in the video were themselves adherents of your most hated heresy: dilettantism.

  2. Also, the video guy makes a serious gaffe when he said that Ephesians 4:12 is about “the church.” It’s about the clergy. I think there are clearer, sustained, less cherry picking critiques of Rick.
