A ‘Modest Proposal’ For Dealing with Heretics

14 Jul

My ‘modest proposal’ for dealing with heretics: public drownings in the summer (so the spray cools us) and burnings in the winter (so we can warm ourselves on the boiling blistering flesh of the godless).

[With thanks to Mark Regier for the 'modest proposal' bit during our tongue in cheek discussion of the good old days].

Agreed. I will take your proposal to the Council of Glodwin!

which, by the way, is why the angry atheists and other unintelligent folk are so upset. they haven’t learned either to read or pay attention. that’s why the psalmist calls such persons ‘fools’. and we all know the only thing that you can do with a fool is ignore him. he will soon enough find another object of his hatred.

That might actually be a good joke if the church hadn’t already done that for a long, long time.

it actually didnt do it for a long long time at all. from the beginning of the persecution of the anabaptists to the end of the holy inquisition it was less than 200 years. compare the roman empire’s 400 year persecution of christianity if you really want a long term wholesale slaughterfest.

So… 200 years of killing people for their beliefs is… okay?

not with me. but if youre going to complain about christianity you have to complain twice as much about the roman empire. and when you do then i’ll take your indignation seriously. till then its not honest indignation, its simply another attempt to blame modern christians for the sins of their long dead ancestors.

go ahead, you can be honest, just admit that it isnt all the killing you have problems with (else youd also bring up the millions of jews and others killed by the stargazing new age-ist loon hitler) – it’s christianity.

don’t worry though, i wont hold my breath.

Killing is always wrong. Saying that others killed more people or more recently doesn’t change that.

but it does indicate a profound bias when only one set of killers is singled out and the others- who killed more- are left aside.

    No, I don’t think that’s true.

I mentioned the church, specifically, because your “modest proposal” was about, specifically, burning/drowning people for their beliefs (or lack thereof.) Had you said something about gassing individuals for being “inferior”, my response would have been different.

and you took with complete seriousness an obviously tongue in cheek bit of sarcasm. would you have been so concerned if the subject hadnt been the church?

Only twelve comments? Really? And nearly all positive?

    That’s called ‘censorship’, Professor.

no its called approving the comments that are intelligent and NOT from anonymous people or false email addresses or vulgar. if you wish to have open commenting allowing all manner of spam on your blog that’s your choice. my choice is not to allow the cowardly to hide behind anonymity. if people dont want to own their words, i’m not obligated to give them a hearing.

if you and others dont like my policy, i dont care. go read elsewhere.
