The Washington Post informs us that at Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University
For at least one day last week … administrators blocked campus access to the Web site of Lynchburg’s News & Advocate, reportedly because the newspaper ran a story about the large amount of federal student aid the school receives. The chancellor of the evangelical college, Jerry Falwell Jr., told the News & Advocate that campus policies allow administrators to “block a number of sites at will.” Falwell wouldn’t give the newspaper a reason for blocking access to its site: “We’re a private organization and we don’t have to give a reason and we’re not.”
Well there ya go. ’We don’t want our students knowing how much federal aid we’re getting because we constantly advance a Republican ideology and Republicans are all about self sufficiency and if they knew we were getting all that sweet taxpayer cash, it might make them think….’ ’Oh, and if we want to block any news organization that reports this, we’ll do that too, so stick that in your pipe and smoke it WaPo.’
Last week, Salon.com picked up the story and pointed out that Liberty received more funds than the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which received $420 million from the federal government.
Bahahahahaha! If the Repubs really want to slash, let them slash Liberty. A private Uni. which taxpayers ought not be funding anyway. (But of course since the ‘liberals’ aren’t running the place, there’s no call for cutting dollars). Demagoguery, pure and simple.

Its not aid, its a tithe.
They get more money than NPR?? ONE SCHOOL gets more money than NPR?? How? Why? And why the freak isn’t congress concerned about this??
because theyve pumped more republicans into the voting public than any other school i suppose. let’s just call it ‘kickback’.
Financial aid is not the same as money given to NPR or PBS by the Federal Govt. Financial aid must be paid back by the students (unless its a grant). Financial aid is available to almost every student, so its not a discriminatory issue. Money given to NPR and PBS are just plain grants, and are not paid back. They are two different financial animals. As to the amount of federal student aid being given to students at the school, I have no idea if it is higher than average amount or lower than average amount or just average. I would suggest that a higher than average amount could be a problem in that there costs are to high. Perhaps, that is what they are trying to hide. It would not be the first private university to have this problem. (Oral Roberts University almost collapsed several years ago because of its finances). Really, Falwell’s response is terrible. He should have sat down and talked about the costs of going to school. Sadly, it is not cheap.
then why try to hide the massive amounts the school was receiving from the students?
I have no idea. Also, isn’t the Feds doing all student loan now? That would certainly change the amount coming into every college and university. I have no idea why he is hiding the money. Maybe money problems.
And I have never attended Liberty University.
Not surprising given that they took money from Moonies to build the school in the first place.
well when its green it doesnt matter if satan himself contributes it does it
If this story runs I imagine that we shall shortly get a statement from Franklin Graham saying that Christian Institutions in the States are under attack. His 4 children all went to Liberty and a nephew is a Law lecturer there.
hey, y’all forgot, folks in Liberty are giving a lot of $$$ in Foreign Aid to the folks in Turkey who found Noah’s ark. Unfortunately, after they gave the money to the Turks and the Chinese, they found out that it was but a barn planted there and later on when they found the military man who along with the shepherd who really knew where it was, well, he sort of disappeared with the Foreign Aid. Gotta pray for them, that they mend their ways….
Liberty seems a very odd Christian Institution from this side of the Pond. There was all that Ergun Caner stuff last year and this year they’ve come out in support of Mormon hatemonger Glenn Beck. I know that the Falwells and Liberty have a history of racism and dis-interest in social justice but don’t they know that Mormonism isn’t really compatible with their version of Evangelical Christianity theologically and that Glenn Beck shouldn’t be admired or supported by anybody who believes in the love of Jesus and the message of the gospel.
you’re right on each and every point. but it isnt just in britain that the school and its policies are looked at with dismay.
