Antonio has the story of the stained glass window in a French Church which portrays Hitler as Herod the Great, killing Jews. The remarkable thing? The window was made in 1941!
The rebellious depiction at St Jacques Church in Montgeron, south of Paris, went unnoticed for 70 years before it was pointed out to officials. The figure has Hitler’s hair but his moustache has been hidden behind his arm. The 1941 window was ‘an act of artistic and religious resistance’, said MP Isabelle Bigand-Viviani. The window, which was made in July 1941, would have meant almost certain death for those who created it. Local historian Renaud Arpin said: ‘Very few people have noticed it over the years. ‘This ignorance would have been entirely understandable – if you’d known what it depicted during the war you would have been in a great deal of trouble.’
That’s fantastically brave! It’s a shame no one really took note till now.
