Zwinglius Redivivus

The Difference Between Luther and Zwingli Nicely Summarized

Posted in Luther, Theology, Zwingli by Jim on December 2, 2010

Gottfried Locher wrote this brilliant line which magnificently summarizes the difference between Luther and Zwingli and their Christologies.

Luthers Christologie ist eine solche der Weihnacht, diejenige Zwinglis eine solche von Ostern oder Himmelfahrt.

You don’t get insights like that from most.

What practical differences does that make?

Does it mean that Luther focuses on the incarnation, as in the importance of Jesus’ preexistence, life, ministry, and death on the cross?

And that Zwingli focuses on Jesus’ present Lordship over humanity?

it means that luther’s christology is ‘from below’ and zwingli’s is ‘from above’.
