My Forgetfulness is Your Good Fortune, Maybe

I didn’t realize that I had ordered a copy of James Dunn’s Did the First Christians Worship Jesus? in February when it was first announced so I was surprised when two copies arrived today (because I ordered in in July too… drats).

So my forgetfulness is your good fortune, maybe.  You see, in the humongous magnanimity that is me, I’m willing to let you have it.  If, that is, you tell me why you deserve it.

Two rules- you have to be very clever and a resident of the United States (sorry foreigners, it’s too bloody expensive to mail anything overseas), and you have to tell me why you deserve it by Friday the 23rd of July.  That’s when I’ll decide.

Comment away and pray.  My decision will be, doubtless, totally capricious.

  1. I have shed my library of Jim Dunn’s works! At least here. And I have “parsed” back N.T. Wright’s works here also. I gave them to the Salvation Army! I am kidding, lol.

  2. I am both clever, and a resident of these United States you speak of. I deserve it because I am broke (this pitty-party brought to you by my wife’s ongoing cancer treatments) and I have only read Dunn through the lens of Larry Hurtado, and that just isn’t fair. Not to mention I may be led astray by the likes of a James McGrath if I am not able to read Dunn’s view of early Jesus-worship in his own words…

    1. I am known to you and reside in the US which makes postage about $4.00 bookrate.
    2. You are gentle educating me, and this would continue your work.
    3. I hate ebooks.
    4. I love regular books and keep them out of the hands of my little ones. That is why they make Golden Books.
    5. Lastly, you have a great sense of humor.

    Thank you for your time.

  4. We’re not worthy.

A dumb comedy line but profound Christian theology.

And, I have reviewed my previous posting and see that I have made a number of grammar mistakes. I need more educating.

  6. Hi Dr. West,
I don’t live in the US. But I deserve that book. So I cleverly devised a workaround.
I have a friend in Kentucky who will be flying to the Philippines in January. He is our visiting professor for that term. So, if you choose me, then you don’t have to ship it all the way to the Philippines, but right there in Kentucky. How more clever can that be?

Another consideration is impact. Just imagine the impact it will make to my teaching. I am influencing Asian leaders right here in my classroom. That will be the legacy you’re leaving in this third-world Baptist seminary.

And finally, I will be making your blog a required reading in my Hermeneutics class. That will surely boost your rating off the charts.

    Thank you in advance. :-)

  7. Should not there be an option for those residents of other countries to pay their own postage if their comment were considered winsome enough?

It might be a smart move if one ever wanted to holiday cheaply in some far flung and beautiful part of the world, like New Zealand?

  8. Because, I agree with your politics and admire your stand, oh icon of biblioblogdom. And ye, you have tamed my view of Zwingli as I see his more academic stance against the early attempts and dumbing down Scripture.

  9. Can you advise if you consider Britain as overseas or simply another another state of the US? You know like an outpost?

If you give me this book I will sell it on Ebay and donate the proceeds to the poor. I promise.
